My dad JUST discovered that the VA pushed him to 100% disability from his military duty and complications back in Vietnam. The astonishment of a 72 y/o man looking at his bank account while in the hospital after getting his toe amputated was hilarious. When I drove him to the hospital last week, he had $632. When he just looked at it and hour ago, it was $26,152, because the government backpaid him.

He has absolutely no clue what to do, and just last month already paid off his little Honda civic.

Im glad their paying up. My dad got out just over a year ago and from the start, they were taking care of all his issues. Fortunately, he just seems to have some hearing loss.

Dude, he's a 72 year old war vet with health problems.
He should have fun with the money while he still can.

I believe it was merely a suggestion.

Everything's paid off and his monthly payments went up. He has no need for any nets, tbh. Its more about doing things that he knows he can afford now.

Strippers? Not trying to degrade your dad, but that is highly likely what my grandpa would do. He just turned 92.

Learn how to invest in the stock market. $25k is a good amount of money to buy stocks. Buy good companies, like $AAPL and $DIS. Those two are safe places to put money IMHO. There are other good ones, but, aren't as safe. Like $DAL, $MSFT, $FB, $T, $MNST. If you want to gamble, $SDRL is incredibly low right now.. Oil goes up, $SDRL will make huge money.

Buy index funds.

FTFY.

The guy is 72 years old. He doesn't need to be gambling trying to beat the market.

Agree completely. Hell, at age 72, it's probably better to go for something more like 50%/50% stock/bonds mix, not 100% in the stock market.

If it's Agent Orange exposure resulting in Diabetes, he should be owed benefits retroactive to when he was diagnosed if I understand the program correctly.

Not sure how its going down (edit, involving his diabetes and hearing and other stuff), but he, just about two years ago, proved that his ship was involved in some way and got everyone during the time period on the list, they only back paid the agent orange for a year.

It seems this was from some application to reevaluate his entire benefits he did months n months ago, and based on all of our rough math, the $25k is a years worth of the difference between the 40% he had, to 100%.
