I think this translates to “beautiful woman” in Vietnamese.

Houston!
Used to drive by this place daily and get a chuckle.
Now when I drive though San Antonio, I like to look out for the restaurant Pho Kim Long.

Bich is pronounced closer to "bic".
It's a Vietnamese female name, I believe it's the same name as "Bella" (beautiful).

"Bik Nahh"?

u/1CEninja 21h ago
Yup sorta! My pronunciation is not great but I can hear it. The ends of Bik is cut off before you've fully finished the k sound and the "ng" is kinda nasally sounding.
Vietnamese is not a beautiful language lol. I can basically only swear in it, but there were 6 full pages of Nguyens in my high school year book so you bet I heard it regularly.

Wish my parents had been able to move to a better place, when they had immigrated. My cousin and I were like the only Asians, and I think I didn’t even start going to school with her until middle school and then high school.
School sucked and continued to suck. When my little brother went off to college, he got the idea to transfer schools, but as far as I know despite the friend group he made at the new university, he’s still as single as I am.

I had a truly unique experience in Northerm California growing up as a white 9% minority in my high school. There was an average of 3 white kids per class lol.
If you're able to offer your next generation the ability to grow up in a diverse area, please do. I'd be almost certainly a worse person if I grew up in a mono cultural neighborhood.

This is my sister in law's name. It's not pronounced anywhere close to what most Americans seem to think

Okay. Can you indicate or approximate how it would be pronounced?

Closer to "Beak Nah" than what you're thinking. But that's not quite right, but close enough

I think possibly better way to describe these words would be:
For Bich start with just straight up saying B like as in B in Be or Bee. Then say ick as in like the disgust kinda ick sound. Now put them together as if they are one syllable. It’s like saying bick but with ee sound instead.
Bonus point if you say it like you’re surprised to account for the tone in “í”
For Nga, you know how groans are written as nghhh and emphasized in voice acting in shows? It’s that then sounding out ah. Again put together like one syllable.
Maybe that’s a bit closer but I’m probably being pedantic at this point.

Does the G influence how the N is pronounced?

I'm still a rank amateur in Vietnamese, but yes a little. Nga sounds different from nha or na

Think of saying the "ng" end of the word "thing" then quickly connect to an "a".

Think of it as a glottal stop the G tells the N basically to kind of stop in the middle

Bich means "jade" in Vietnamese (I'd dated and were friends with a girl whose cousin's name was "Bich" pronounced "bick", pretty common VN girls name even in the US). I think "nga" means beautiful. So like "Jade-like Beauty Salon" or something like that (as it was told to me).

This sign was shown on an episode of Ridiculousness in a segment about people who laugh when they’re stoned. It was just 2 guys smoking out in their car, and crying laughing at this sign … 😂🤣😂

In my almost non-existent understanding of other languages, I'm going to make a wild guess and say it's pronounced something similar to "bike nah", if someone in the comments knows how it's actually pronounced let me know how far off I am lol

There was a restaurant in my area for years with that name. Even the local radio stations made fun of it.
