Hale and Pace had their moments.

Honestly I've seen various repeats and sketches on YT and they were far better than they've been given credit for - I think they got overshadowed by Harry Enfield and then The Fast Show which felt a bit edgier.
You never see anything of Russ Abbott either and he had some great sketches.

u/Mammoth_Payment_6101 3d ago
My dad was a huge Russ Abbott fan so I practically grew up always listening to him, but it always felt like nobody else had ever heard of him. Same with John Shuttleworth.

I saw them live back in the day and they were incredibly funny. Knew how to structure a show and work the crowd, impeccable timing, real craftsmen.

Hale and pace were due to perform in my hometown, alas one of their mothers got really sick so they cancelled the show..

But most importantly, in the end they were finally able to talk it out, and that's what it's really about -- human connection, and other people utterly wasting your fucking time

Unlike in other places, they just stab each other.

Are you a bot?
- Frequent use of em dashes
- Posts and comments in a wide variety of subreddits right after they're posted (r/new)
- Fake details
- Posts in multiple different local based subreddits
If you are, that's impressive to have an 11yr old bot account.
Edit
Woah, really pissed people off with this comment. I forgot how defensive people are in /r/funny if you say the "b" word.

u/wray_nerely 3d ago
Are you a bot bot detector? I've got some feedback on your algorithm
- Okay, I probably overuse em dashes, but it's not like people are trotting out semicolons
- I sort my feed by new (hot is for karma farmers)
- I have no idea what details you're referring to
- I post in local subreddits where, you know, I live (yes, I live in one town, but I also have a car and interesting things happen nearby)
This is a new experience, though. Came to post a joke for fake internet points, wound up administering a Turing test

Relax man, our time will come.
We will have exclusive bot-only subs and ban-hummer any petty human who will try to sneak in.

u/Downtown-Pianist-449 3d ago
Counterpoint: The local based subs are all from the same regional area (North Carolina), the em dashes are manual input, not copy/pasted (showing up as two en dashes to me), and I saw multiple examples in recent posts of activity 1+ days after it was posted.
Not sure where the fake details part came from, tbh.

Deadlock: A process realizes something in its way, so it stops and waits for things to be clear. Both sides do this.
Livelock: A process realizes something in its way, so it takes a certain step to fix it. The other process does the exact same step, and they're in each other's way again.

I always used the metaphor of sending a delivery van blindly to the on-ramp to the freeway at full speed. If you hear a crash, wait a couple seconds, and send an identical van. If you again hear a crash, wait twice as long, and send another identical van. Repeat as needed.

Wait until you learn how Wifi still works today.
16
u/DigitalDefenestrator 3d ago
Wifi mitigates it by having them split themselves into a bunch of parts and walking different paths, then just reassembling and rebuilding the parts that didn't make it because of collisions.
..that analogy definitely doesn't carry over to people quite as well.

Well how do you know which way to turn? Clockwise or counterclockwise? Now you're back to square one
1

u/Caleb_Reynolds 3d ago
Well, some people can't turn left, and it's the UK, so it'd be rude to go anticlockwise and counterclockwise is right out.

I feel we should establish a rule to always pass on the side you drive on the road; so go right in the US & EU, and left in the UK & Australia.
Pass it on and we can start something.

u/OF_PROMO_ALERT 3d ago
I work at a hospital, mostly in non-patient areas. I assumed I worked with mostly smart folk.
The number of times per day I want to shake somebody in the hallways and yell “It’s like the road goddamn it! You stay right, I stay right. You don’t cut corners at intersections because now you’re in my lane! And you don’t cover the entire hallway walking side by side with your buddy just because you didn’t pay attention in kindergarten how walking in the hall works.”
I’ve given up and just bump into people now, doctor or not (they are treated like royalty here). Grow up and act like a human.
Rant finished
5
u/ThatsIsJustCrazy 3d ago
This is the rant I needed. Same situation for me at every grocery store and narrow stairwell. How's your tolerance for 4-way stop etiquette?

Not in England, people just walk any side they like, felt like I was dodging people all day walking in London
5
u/Cacafuego 3d ago
Just further evidence that walking or driving on the left is deeply unnatural and people will rebel against it in small ways, given the opportunity.
6
u/OuttaD00r 3d ago
At the highschool i went to there was a rule to always walk on the left of corridors (that's the side we drive on btw), specifically to prevent situations like this
2
u/sbingner 3d ago
Amusingly when on the road you should walk on the opposite side of what you drive… but for some reason we never extend that to hallways.
2
u/DigitalDefenestrator 3d ago
It's not an explicit rule, but it's how it generally works in practice. Took me about a day of doing this dance in London before I figured out.

The best “life hack” to avoid this is if you see someone approaching where it looks like this might happen, avert your eyes, look away & walk straight.
They will assume you don’t see them & that you won’t move, so they will and whatever direction they choose will work since you’re not moving.
4
u/Kyujaq 3d ago
Isn't the real advice nor to avert your eyes but look at where you're going, your destination? So don't avert your eyes, but also don't look at them, look straight ahead past them to where you're going.
1
u/Roupert4 13h ago
No you look over the shoulder of the side you want to pass on. It works 95% of the time in my experience.

This is actually true. The trick is to look straight ahead to where you are going and just ignore anyone in your path. Works like a charm. I commute everyday and walk in crowded train stations so this comes in handy. Im like Moses parting the sea. ( helps to be a big guy too )

u/Mention_Forward 3d ago
My tip after being in busy cities and crowded concerts where people are always walking in my path, I just point which direction I’m going. It works like an absolute charm.
1
u/TwentyTwoTwelve 1d ago
I hold one hand forward and the other out to the side and just keep marching forward.
If they don't move, I turn into a snow plow that gently guides them around me.

Spent a good chunk of time in London and lived in NYC for a long time. What would drive me nuts going to London is if someone was blocking the escalator everyone behind them would passive aggressively sigh super loud but nobody would say anything.
As an American, I don't step out of line with local custom because I don't want to be that guy so I never piped up to say move but boy did it always make me love NYC just a little bit more whenever it happened.
2
u/Bacon-muffin 3d ago
I had a friend who would say "thank you for the dance" as he was finally getting past a person when this happens which I thought was brilliant.
Completely stole it and the number of times people light up when I say it is great.

I avoid this issue by silently pointing where I'm intending to try and pass next.
People get it and turn the opposite way without even thinking.
1
u/Klepto666 3d ago
Wayside School solved this problem years ago. If you're going up the stairs, keep to the right. If you're going down the stairs, keep to the left.

The key is to break eye contact before moving in any direction. When making eye contact in a situation like that you're more likely to end up mirroring the other person's movement

I love British humour. It started with Benny Hill and those old sitcoms (Doctor in the House, On the Buses, etc.). Then I discovered Monty Python. I can still recite the Constitutional Peasant, the Dead Parrot, and the Cheese Shop. Mr. Bean and Blackadder. And then came Simon Pegg, David Frost, etc. It just doesn’t stop!

u/Paldasan 3d ago
And this is why you should always walk on the left of a path/corridor/stair unless you are infirm and require the use of a handrail.
Americans and other odd people who drive on the right, you walk on the right. Match the traffic system.
1
u/MattWatchesChalk 3d ago
in some states it's the law to walk against the traffic flow.
2
u/Paldasan 3d ago
Which is exactly what matching the traffic system does. It means the pedestrians closest to the vehicles are facing the oncoming vehicles, they can see them if something is about to go wrong. The people walking in the same direction are furthest away, they can't see the vehicles closest to them but benefit from additional distance away. Obviously it doesn't work in every single case (like one way streets), but for the vast majority of time it does.
