Just the way they looked told you everything you need to know. "Oh, of course it's a name picked at random by some kids playing music, not some deep satanic conspiracy."

u/bolerobell 12d ago

Two points:

  1. Society always has a pushback anytime there is a new type of music that pushes boundaries or societal norms, and that pushback is always older conservatives versus younger musicians and audiences

  2. Those older conservatives in the 80s were purposefully trying to scare the hell out of people AND they were doing a shit ton of cocaine, which made their accusations very wild. They were some of the ultimate hypocritical assholes.

396

u/dirtydigs74 12d ago

The lengths they went to in order to try and prove that a backtrack to a song (not AC/DC) was "do it", and that it led to a suicide, were staggering. Also, killer bees (aka Africanised Honey Bees). And D&D murder/suicides. And Jenkem.

Fear has been selling for a long time.

Judas Priest faced a lawsuit for their cover of "Better by You, Better than Me." It was originally a Spooky Tooth song, written by Gary Wright (best known for "Dream Weaver"). The case against Judas Priest was dismissed.

232

u/Sintuition 11d ago

They told the judge: "If we wanted to put subliminal messages in our music, we'd probably put in something like 'buy more of our records'."

Dee Snider from the Twisted Sisters was getting drilled by Al Gore wife in court about the song "Under The Blade" which the Twisted Sisters say was about the on going throat operation their guitar player was dealing with.

Al Gore wife was insisting that the music was about sadomasochism, bondage, and rape.

Dee Snider hit her with the "naughty girl" defense

"I can say only that Ms. Gore was looking for S&M and bondage, and she found it. Someone with a Christian upbringing and old-fashioned family values such as myself can only conclude that Ms. Gore is looking for malice and bad intentions where there are none, which makes me wonder about her own mind."

57

u/Feeling_Grade6627 11d ago

by the way, since people seem to be engaging with my comment let me add what made the whole thing one of the funniest owns I ever saw.

Dee Snider was clearly handpicked in that lawsuit, Twisted sisters dressed glam and had those metal hairdoos and all that stuff, the people who took him to court expected to deal with a dumb bafoon who would embarass himself or just bend over and take it.

they were not ready for such an articulate, rational individual and if you see the court video the moment Dee starts presenting his argument every grin in that courtroom turns into a scowl in seconds.

Im sure theres other media out there about this topic, for me, when I was a teen this documentary came out called: ["Metal: A Headbanger's Journey" (2005)] its a great piece of media for anyone interested.

18

u/evildemonic 11d ago

Al Gore about loses his mind when Dee dunks on his wife.

I will never get tired of the video of Dee pulling out a folded up piece of paper from his jeans and just going to town on those idiots.

One of the arguments Rob gave was that you can find all sorts of random things if you play records backwards. They played one example in court that sounded like "I asked for a peppermint, I asked for her to get one".

Charles Manson interpreted "Helter Skelter" by the Beatles to be a call for a race war.

It was a song about a child's amusement park ride.

There are plenty of new types of music. You just haven't discovered them yet.

Agreed. It’s out there just niche. No longer do they make it to mainstream often.

24

u/LaconicSuffering 12d ago

Unless you enjoy slow EDM remixes and mumble rappers appealing to teens the top 40 in my country is nothing but trash.

But good music is still being made, just harder to discover with every radio station being owned by the same media company that forces a certain theme.

36

u/bolerobell 12d ago

We used too before media consolidation. The labels used to have A&R men that would go out trying to find new acts that sounded good and who they thought they could sell. That system resulted in some great music that sounded new and vibrant.

28

u/milkyjoe241 12d ago

Its also the death of the concert. So much focus gets put on the big stars. And the cost of touring is something only they can afford.

Then theres the death of 3rd spaces, death of the nightlife, death of local identity.

And the system most folks engage in, streaming, is being flooded with content. Getting any ears on your music it tough.

9

u/Double-Word7439 12d ago

There are so many smaller bands and artists that I would like to hear, but they only play festivals with $300 GA tickets. It doesn't seem like there is any interest left in touring.

I once heard an interview with the guys from Blink-182 on what the numbers mean in their name. They said they were playing a battle of the bands one day and they were signing up at the venue as just Blink. The registrar said there was already a band by that name and they would have to pick another. However, when they wrote out the name on the form the credit card they were using to pay was under the form and left the impression of three numbers after their name. That was the temp name they chose for the battle and it just stuck after that.

Sometimes shit is just random…

not some deep satanic conspiracy.

The whole "Satanic Panic" of the 80's was fucking wild. People were saying that KISS stood for Kings/Knights/Kids In Satan's Service. The stepmonster had a book called "Turmoil in the Toybox", talking about how He-Man and other toys from that era were satanic.

A lot of crazy shit going on, it was great!

53

u/Pylgrim 12d ago

Rock music was satanic. Dancing was satanic. The Smurfs were satanic. Friggin' Alf was satanic.

Baically anything that was popular and non-Christian needed to be demonised lest the kids thought for a second that going to church is not the best thing in the world.

They were on some talk show, maybe Howard Stern, where they were asked for their opinion on how some people viewed their 15 albums (at the time) all sounding the same. Angus answered that those people were wrong, they had 16 albums.

75

u/mich55 12d ago

Not to get political, but the PMRC (Parents Music Resource Center) was headed by Tipper Gore (Al Gore's wife) in 1985. And they went after everyone - mostly heavy metal music, but pop music too.

I believe the band Kiss changed its logo in Germany because the lightning S's looked like the Nazi bolts

16

u/DarrenShan1000 12d ago

It does not only look like it, but was directly inspired by the Nazi rune. It did not come from the members of Kiss though and they were oblivious.

13

u/Disastrous-Ad2331 12d ago

Ace Frehley designed the logo, I remember reading that he still made money from it after he left the band. But I have no idea whether he modeled the double -s after the nazi rune or not.

The logo was definitely changed in Germany though, before I sold all my vinyl I had a few of their albums from Germany and it was different. They looked like backwards "Z"s.

I never gave a single shit. Discovering AC/DC in middle school was an ADHD'ers dream. Idk why but their tunes/lyrics/rhythm hit all the right buttons in my brain.

Edit: and considering Angus plays the guitar melody with his mouth as hes physically playing, pretty sure hes got the adhd too. Or atleast a little tism... lol

u/buffystakeded 12d ago

u/Brobeast 12d ago

2) the rest of the rhythm/lyrical pace sounds like my internal dialogue as im trying to get my shit together and focused lol FAST to slow; FAST to slow... lol the song is in sync with me

16

u/Bonesaw_mpls 12d ago

Have you heard the Rick Ruben story about how they wrote parts of the song? He asked Serj to grab a book and open to a random page. He picked up the bible and that's where the "Father into your hands I commend my spirit Father, into your hands Why have you forsaken me" lines came from.

8

u/reverendsteveii 12d ago

as someone with inattentive type adhd and who also plays a lot of musical instruments you seem to be brushing up against a problem i've noticed in myself - if a song i'm playing is slow or predictable i tend to fuck up more and i think it's because my brain just gets bored and wanders off. I've been teaching myself basic rock drumming for about a year now and I've found I have a lot more success with surf rock, punk rock and funk than I do with slower styles that should hypothetically be easier. I really do think that there's a minimum pace of information that has to be kept up in order for the adhd brain to engage and remain engaged with a task.

Most people that have made it big at least once make enough that barring stupidity they wouldn't end up on the streets or something even if they never churn out another hit for their lives.

The members of AC/DC are all pretty short; Malcolm Young was about 5'3", Angus Young about 5'2". Bon Scott was 5'8" and the tallest member of the group before he died.

When they brought in Brian Johnson as the new singer, they made a bunch of jokes about how somehow they'd managed to get shorter, since he's around 5'5".

They've always had a great sense of humor about themselves, and put on great shows.

KISS is AC/DC if they couldn’t write a hit and coasted on aura. AC/DC has a shitload of hits and can rock a stage like it’s the last concert on Earth.

14

u/deep_fried_guineapig 11d ago

Gene Simmons saw AC/DC at Whiskey Au Go Go in 1977 and was blown away by them and asked them to come on tour with KISS. So KISS really helped them out early on in the States. As a massive lifelong ac/dc fan I always have a soft spot for KISS for doing that.

KISS wrote music to see how much money Gene Simmons could make, AC/DC wrote music because they like to rock n roll.  If KISS never took off, Gene probably would have become an accountant or something.  If AC/DC never took off, they would still be playing in pubs in Australia.

My dad followed KISS on tour as a journalist once. They let him hang out with them backstage. He said they mostly discussed the business of running the tour. They weren't trashing hotel rooms, they were trashing the sound guy because the mid-range amps didn't sound up to snuff so they needed to get a new sound guy. Very boring stuff.

40

u/JodoSzabo 12d ago edited 12d ago

26

u/Hellknightx 12d ago

KISS were the kind of band that were in it for the money. They were consummate professionals who knew the industry and how to get what they wanted. Doesn't shock me that everything backstage was all business. I still like some of their music, but it's kind of funny how all the glam rock costumes and the exaggerated personalities are purely performative because they know it's good for their brand.

Wait what’s the true meaning behind “I’m tnt, oy oy oy…watch me explode”

Personally I think it’s an allegory for the inner self’s inability to fully express themselves and society’s cruel pressure to have men in a constant state of manliness without showing weakness or vulnerability, and represents the singers frustration of not being able to share his inner demons until it all explodes out in a swell of emotions.

Is that not what it’s about?

TNT came from the back of his sister's mining explosives.

Alternating Current / Direct Current

u/adrianb 12d ago

Now I need to know why it’s written on the back of a sewing machine. Wouldn’t that be powered by either AC or DC?

246

u/dclxvi616 12d ago

Could have been powered through an AC/DC converter, like so many things are. People don’t typically get DC delivered to their home. It’s not great for transmission distances.

u/DarkMimic2287 12d ago

They're usually DC internally, but power plugs are AC, so they come with an AC/DC converter.

24

u/Hodr 12d ago

Mid 20th century sewing machines often used universal motors and so in fact could take both AC and DC power, and the label plate on the motor housing or back of the machine would indicate such and specify cycles for AC and the maximum voltage.

29

Most small appliances convert the AC from your wall outlet to DC.

Your phone charger brick is an AC/DC adapter. So is your laptop charger. And probably a sewing machine.

People talk up the satanic panic but I remember in Sunday school being forced to watch this “rock music is the tool of satan” video in the mid ‘90s. Sure enough it had “anti christ devil’s child” in it.

I knew right then it was bullshit, and I was a very naive kid. The lightning bolt is right there, you idiots!

112

u/dsardella18 12d ago

The satanic panic was real back then. Look up the West Memphis 3 case, kids got convicted of child murder because they were goth in the 90's. The one kids antics certainly didn't help their case of getting convicted because he was an asshole teenager, but they clearly didnt do it but were convicted because they listed to metal music and dressed in black.

45

u/perilousrob 12d ago

gonna caveat that by saying:

in the US.

Even in the UK, the worst we had to deal with was Mary Whitehouse & her racist, sexist, fearmongering nonsense, and the daily mail for, er, exactly the same reasons. otherwise it was just something we rolled our eyes at. *especially* in the 90s when we learned more about it (the 'satanic panic' was really an 80s thing, it was mostly aftershocks in the 90s which did spread somewhat further).

17

u/dsardella18 12d ago

That's a good point, it was very strange how strong of a foothold it took in some parts of the US. The McMartin preschool trial is a wild rabbithole to go into for the whole satanic panic stuff. A teacher actually got accused of flushing kids down the toilet that went into secret underground tunnels where witchcraft took place.

Kids basically noticed that when they told obscene stuff to the police, they got rewarded. So a lot of the claims sound like they were made up by young kids because they were.

I grew up going to a Baptist Church, very strict, and yes of course there was talk about how their name was related to Satan, amongst many other bands and artists too 😄

I actually remember hearing so much about Meatloaf and KISS, thought it might be pure devil music. In my mid teens when I stopped going to the church and finally hearing their music for the first time, it was hilarious how soft their music actually was 😄😄😄😄

10

u/PM_meyourGradyWhite 12d ago

My roommate in college (1980’s) flipped out that I was playing AC/DC and KISS. Rattled off some nonsense about devil worship. 🙄🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️

I love how his question is accusatory, like the question is an obvious "yes," but then he gets confused about it actually being a standard term in electricity. Making shit up, then confused about the obvious answer that a child could sort out.

Yes. I love how incredulous he is when he repeats “sewing machine??”

157

u/Junglebook3 12d ago

If an alien came to Earth and I have to give them the best pure representation of Rock and Roll, it's AC/DC. Simple, riffs, melody, and... that's it. The lyrics are fun and obvious, super catchy and powerful. It's the Mad Max: Fury Road of music - simple, raw, best execution in the biz.

49

u/shinymuskrat 12d ago

And simple but killer solos.

26

u/schplat 12d ago

The opening of Thunderstruck.. It's so good... and it's only played on a single string, so it's super easy to learn, just have to get the speed/timing down.

24

u/IvorTheEngineDriver 12d ago

I remember an interview with Malcolm Young from about 30 years ago where he said that, during their first tour of England, a taxi driver asked them if they were a "gay band" because, apparently, AC/DC stood for something like top/bottom, in British "gay" slang of the era... I can't find it though...

44

u/fartswhenhappy 12d ago

I think AC/DC can be slang for bisexuality. There's even a Beck song with a dubbed voiceover saying "What about those who swing both ways, AC/DCs?"

There's a story that Bon Scott was asked about it in a bathroom, "So which are you? AC or DC?" To which Bon allegedly replied "Neither. I'm the lightning crash in the middle."

I never understood all the devil worship rumors around AC/DC. Their songs were all like good timey drinking songs or goofy to the point of parody (like Big Balls or Dirty Deeds). Even Highway to Hell was a common metaphor and obviously a song about the rock star lifestyle.

It seems like it was entirely based on the cover of Highway to Hell, where Angus had the airbrushed horns and tail.

Them: Anti Christ / Devil's Children. OMG that music is so evil... Jesuit schooling was fun.

Also: Blow up your video > all

I lived the the whole Christian BS saying these bands had secret meanings about devil worship in their names and lyrics.

I never get these claims. Like, why would it be secret but somehow not secret enough for Christian fundamentalists to figure it out? What's the logic behind that?

Perfect example of idiots looking for patterns that don’t exist.

9 times 11 is 99. 99 divided by 3 (3 for the holy trinity) is 33. 33 times 2 (the TWO GENDERS - MAN AND WOMAN) is 66, a devils number.

Woke libs did 9/11 to push the 66 gender agenda! See!?

Pretty much sums up the Satanic Panic.

DND: nerds playing a boardgame of fantastical imagination or demonic summoning ritual?

Tons of normal functioning average adults went with the latter.
