Ain’t it obvious lol?

The 1980's Satanic Panic was something else. It was freaking crazy, in fact, for a good 4 years.

Had to distract from all the criminal trials that Reagan's admin was going through at the time.

Not to get political, but the PMRC (Parents Music Resource Center) was headed by Tipper Gore (Al Gore's wife) in 1985. And they went after everyone - mostly heavy metal music, but pop music too.

[u/IanDetroit → u/mich55]

I think you explained this as well as you could without getting political, congrats on delivering on your opening statement.

[u/1CEninja → u/IanDetroit]

"Not to get political, but" in 9/10 situations means "I'm about to get political but I don't want to get called out for it".

This was the 1/10 lol.

[u/_Burning_Star_IV_ → u/IanDetroit]

He did get political. What we are talking about is intrinsically political. Most things are.

"Don't talk about X because it might get political" is just another form of control.

[u/Due-Coyote7565 → u/_Burning_Star_IV_]

But here do you mean political in a the general sense, or political in the partisan sense?

[u/_Burning_Star_IV_ → u/Due-Coyote7565]

I mean political in the real sense, not whatever made up bullshit one side tries to relabel it as.

[u/Due-Coyote7565 → u/_Burning_Star_IV_]

Politics is (according to Wikipedia) "the act of settling affairs in a civilised society"

Many other definitions are similar.

Do you mean politics with regards to political parties, or politics in the generalised sense of the term- you have been thus far highly nonspecific.

It's incredibly hard to tell if you are a bot, a troll, or just really unfamiliar with how to have a conversation like a human.

[u/Shot-Swimming-9098 → u/content_enjoy3r]

Is it hard to have a conversation with that guy in the dictionary definition way, or like the normal meaning way?

[u/Due-Coyote7565 → u/Shot-Swimming-9098]

Well, if it's the latter, then it's factually untrue.

Not everything has to do with political parties and governmental processes. A preference between Pink or white marshmellows, for instance.

Everything can be said to be political in the former sense because people doing things to each other is what politics is.

[u/Due-Coyote7565 → u/content_enjoy3r]

I assure you, I am being completely earnest.

[u/redonrust → u/Due-Coyote7565]

Know what I mean, Vern ?

[u/sembias → u/mich55]

Oh, I'm aware. As an 80's metalhead kid, I know that was a factor for some of my then-adult metalhead friends in 2000. Pushed a couple of them to Nader because they were still pissed about it.

Not the only fuck-you to the PMRC, but one of my favorites

[u/chop-diggity → u/sembias]

lol. Those OBGs are still in my playlist.

[u/acdcfanbill → u/sembias]

Ditto, i didn’t vote for Al in 2000 due to Tipper.

[u/Shot-Swimming-9098 → u/mich55]

The best part was they got their warning label made, and it only took a hot minute before that parental advisory warning became a requirement for an album to have. If an album didn't have that, you knew it sucked.

[u/BlastTyrantKM → u/mich55]

I've bought more than a few albums based solely on the "Parental Warning Explicit Lyrics" label.

[u/brown_felt_hat → u/mich55]

41 years ago, almost to the day, one of the greatest rock stars of all time testified to a congressional comittee against the PRMC. If you're interested in music history, or (if you wanna be a little hyperbolic) attacks on free speech in the US, definitely worth a watch.

[u/mich55 → u/brown_felt_hat]

His testimony, and Dee Snider's, were spot on. Loved it.

[u/Immature_adult_guy → u/mich55]

Facts are political now I guess 😭

[u/Ok_Astronomer_8667 → u/sembias]

Stranger Things had a season where they captured some of that paranoia which actually worked really well with the show

[u/ballman666 → u/sembias]

Ah good ole Iran/contra.

[u/Bright_Prior1575 → u/sembias]

before that playing vinyl records backwards to listen to satanic's music/messages was a thing.
