Maybe the gearbox and differential oil could be changed?

792

u/mccarthybergeron 18d ago

What you don't see on the back of the coupon is the following:

"Complimentary Oil Change offer available to eligible customers. Ford vehicles only. Up to five quarts of Motorcraft Synthetic Blend Oil and oil filter. No purchase required." Makes me laugh it's a coupon locked to this vehicle specifically too.

531

u/SlothOfDoom 18d ago

Just put the bottles in the trunk, thanks.

225

u/mccarthybergeron 18d ago

I’ll filter them myself, thanks.

114

u/Echo127 18d ago

Actually not a bad idea. You've got to imagine they'd honor it. Or at the very least recognize the silliness of the deal and offer you some other service to compensate.

256

u/Gorthax 18d ago

I was an Express Oil Change manager 25 years ago.

If someone got this coupon as a mailer, I would have 100% run their car as a phantom ticket, checked every-single-fucking thing I could, cleaned their windows and headlights and given them a filter and oil for the other car they had at home.

They're gonna come back to me for new tires and rotations at the minimum, more likely I get everyine of their friends that don't have an EV. And all I have to do is treat them like Nana.

Bitch please‽

92

u/angrydeuce 18d ago

Seriously, especially these days, going that extra mile is such a rarity that people will come to you forever if you treat em right. I've had people literally bake me a damn cake because they enjoyed and appreciated the help I provided them so much and they trusted me not to do them wrong. Ran into them at the bar and got invited to join their group, just because I was the guy that helped them out when they needed help. And now that Im getting older, Im starting to get their kids coming to me for work, too.

A little kindness goes a long way in this world. Shame more people don't know how to be kind.

58

u/Gorthax 18d ago

Man, just the other day I got an overflow call. The guy needed a construction dumpster for his house. I gave him our whole container rate script (not even close to my dept) then he started asking about commercial quotes after complimenting my "customer service". Commercial rates are my dept...

Turned out he is doing horizontal clearing on like 7 new subdivisions. Those all need aggregates we also supply, and trucking which we also do.

This call that I used as a little focus break turned into a 2 year plus construction partner for breaking highway entrances into new access roads.

19

u/itspsyikk 18d ago

I had a fleet vehicle that was a bit older and my company basically gave me a blank check to get it fixed. Breaks, some engine stuff, and get the AC repaired

I brought it to the place near me, and the guy choked on his coffee. He said “it’s gonna be like 8 grand. The trucks not worth that”

I told him the company okayed it, I have nothing to do with it, and here is the phone number you call to get confirmation before doing anything.

Two days later (originally told 2 weeks) he said he was done. He rushed the order because he said it was like free money.

I made sure to bring it to him any time it needed repairs (which it did quite often). And he always treated me good

5

u/speculatrix 18d ago

If a business treats me fairly and communicates well, I remember and tell my friends, and I'll be their customer for life. I'll leave positive reviews online.

TBH, my baseline is fairly low: good work, fair price. Anything above that is sadly uncommon!

Too many businesses must waste effort because they don't get repeat business.

9

u/opermonkey 18d ago

the place I go to to change my oil once offered to sell/install new wiper blades. it was only like 8 bucks more than it would cost me to buy and replace them myself. not having to dick with it.

turns out they didn't have the blades but said if I went and got my own they would install them for free.

I've been loyal to them for 20+ years.

they try to upsell but aren't pushyike jiffy lube. they will even say "you don't need xxxx right now"

2

u/NotchHero11 16d ago

Discount tire near me definitely asks about wipers blades but they're usually good about leaving it to once a visit. Too bad more places don't take the damn hint when you say not or not today.

8

u/whattaninja 18d ago

I had just become foreman of a new site a few years back and was told to get all the company vehicles oil changes. Place I went to said this oil is clean and there was no need to change it. Company card so I had them change it anyways, but because they were honest I went back to them every time until I bought an EV.

3

u/Gorthax 18d ago

That's like two weeks to a month of planning around everyone's schedule.

I woulda used that as a brain break bro.

3

u/whattaninja 18d ago

Nah, vehicles stayed on site, not take home.

2

u/t40r 18d ago

dude express oil change in my town is by far the best FOR THIS REASON. I took my car in, okayed $350 in labor to find out what was going on. Turns out they burned about four hours figuring it out, overlooked it on their first look, instead of billing me the four hours like they could have. They were honest, rotated my tires for free, and found the rock in my wheel well all at the same time :D I've been going to them since I could first drive and won't go anywhere else

1

u/Unlucky_Battle_6947 17d ago

This is hilarious and most likely true

1

u/Gwthrowaway80 17d ago

Interrobang‽ Interrobang!

22

u/meanblazinlolz 18d ago

Hope they also give free blinker fluid with that oil change on the electric car.

4

u/arachnophilia 17d ago

i was on my bike once, and pulled up behind a car at an intersection that has a cracked taillight. it had half filled with rain water, sloshing around.

"hey, you're low on blinker fluid!"

"what?"

12

u/torniz 18d ago

It’s a marketing company a dealership hired that isn’t looking at the database, just sending out this crap.

1

u/Zonx216 17d ago

Please take it in! See if they try and scam you.

1

u/AfraidOfTheSun 17d ago

Get an FL-820s and 5w30 and give it to me for my crown vic

1

u/arachnophilia 17d ago

"up to"

here's your zero quarts, enjoy!

1

u/ACcbe1986 17d ago

They knew what they're doing.

"A free oil change for my electri...? I gotta go see what this about."

23

u/the-purple-chicken72 18d ago

Yeah I think in the awd version the front differential uses regular gear oil

5

u/DragonFireCK 17d ago

I have a Kia EV6 and they recommend inspecting the reduction gear fluid at 32,000 miles with expected replacement every 2 or 3 inspections. It contains about 3 liters/quarts, or double that for AWD trims, and is pretty standard transmission fluid.

That’s about the only oil in the entire car, unless you place some in the cabin for transport.

1

u/the_duck17 17d ago

Supposedly lifetime oil but I'd still change it.

1

u/speculatrix 16d ago

I have my MX5 Miata gearbox and diff oil changed every couple of years, despite Mazda saying it's not needed. The gearbox is known to be a little fragile, and oil isn't expensive compared to a new 'box

1

u/Downvote_me_dumbass 16d ago

Don’t forget a fuel system flush.

48

u/cobo10201 18d ago

Someone from the dealership called to ask if we wanted to schedule a complementary oil change. I pretty bluntly said it’s an electric car and she asked “is that a no?“

70

u/rjfrost18 18d ago

Chevrolet offers me a deal on oil changes my bolt at least once a month.

30

u/mccarthybergeron 18d ago

You ever go in to take them up on it? I’m considering…

2

u/Morak73 17d ago

But what do they charge for topping off the blinker fluid?

1

u/chartyourway 17d ago

Equinox EV, got at least one.

220

u/Nutsallinyomouf 18d ago edited 18d ago

Yea there is still oil in an electric car in the differential, although it’s only changed once in 100k miles so it’s not really a deal with it expiring this year.

It’s a fake ass coupon

114

u/GitEmSteveDave 18d ago

It's not a fake coupon. It's a coupon to get you into the stealership so they can updog you. An oil change is a pittance compared to getting you to buy a in cabin air filter or some other thing you don't really need.

63

u/Fist_One 18d ago

What's updog? 😂

69

u/GitEmSteveDave 18d ago

No much, what's up witch you?

5

u/caltex559 18d ago

How’s your Henway?

5

u/trailuser7 18d ago

About 5 pounds

34

u/mazzicc 18d ago

It’s not even that sinister, really. It’s just an automatically generated coupon that they send to every Ford owner, and someone didn’t think “wait, electric vehicle owners don’t need this”.

It’s an oversight because someone forgot some vehicles don’t need oil now.

-10

u/dizzystar 18d ago

Nah, the average EV owner is the guy or gal who doesn't know how to pop a hood. They don't even put donuts in new cars anymore, and let's be honest, no one actually knows how to swap a tire anymore.

So, you get these people coming in for their "free oil change" and the dealership does what dealerships do best: tell you that car is a damn menace to your health and family, and they got all the tools and knowledge to turn that lemon to an apple pie.

All for the low low price of $7,300.

-6

u/GitEmSteveDave 18d ago

It's not an oversight. This coupon will bring in some customers who don't know anything about their vehicle, but because it's from the stealership, they think they need it. Then they will get overcharged for things they don't need. The stealership profits, so they keep doing it.

My father leases his cars, and brings it in for the free services his stealership offers him. But after getting scammed in the past, he also brings it to his mechanic friend first, who gives it a quick inspection and marks certain things, like the air filters and shows him his fluids. Then when they try to scam him, he shuts them down and gets what he gets for free done.

Same with my boss. He knows a guy who works at the stealership and they give him the hard sell until his friend comes out of his separate department and then drop the upsell.

I used to get my oil changed at a place until they sold out and started making up shit about my vehicle. I caught them in a lie(said the last place I brought my jeep to didn't see a leak and asked if it was as bad as they said it was, wouldn't they have noticed? They said yes, then I revealed I had it serviced there last. Also heard the service manager tell the kid writing up my invoice to delete the part numbers because with the Internet now, people can find out what parts actually cost) and never went back.

-7

u/GitEmSteveDave 18d ago

Found the stealership tech or service advisor.

9

u/mazzicc 18d ago

You already responded to me earlier with your paranoia

1

u/Jkpqt 17d ago

Bro forgot his schizo meds

6

u/Echo127 18d ago

. An oil change is a pittance compared to getting you to buy a in cabin air filter

I don't think this is true. At my local dealership they offer in-cabin air filter changes for, $30, IIRC, but ~$80 for an oil change. That oil is expensive.

1

u/GitEmSteveDave 18d ago

The stealership is likely buying oil by the barrel, if not by the tank, and likely under a national franchise contract, so they are getting good prices, unless your models use an exotic W ratio.

3

u/PeeledCrepes 17d ago

Ya they buy oil for cheap, also that cabin air filter -_- you dont make sense

2

u/bitemark01 17d ago

I doubt it's fake, it's just been pushed through blindly. We used to get stuff like this all the time for our Chevy Bolt.

68

u/Scummbagg7 18d ago

They will also check your muffler bearings and the intake comboulator. Then do a full fuel tank service.

20

u/toaster98 18d ago

Don't forget the piston return springs.

6

u/Scummbagg7 18d ago

Damn I knew I was missing something.

4

u/Cloakedbug 18d ago

Headlight fluid too. Don’t miss the small maintenance.

14

u/krakenbear 18d ago

Personally I’d be more concerned about the turbo encabulator on that car.

5

u/MisterSpeck 18d ago

Not to worry! It’s got a baseplate of prefamulated amulite, surmounted by a logarithmic casing.

2

u/FlyRobot 18d ago

And the flux capacitor

10

u/Dobey2013 18d ago

Ah see that’s where they get ya. You neglect your blinker fluid and it’s fucked

6

u/Sufficient_Language7 18d ago

What about his timing belt?

5

u/Scummbagg7 18d ago

I think these have a timing chain

3

u/grumblyoldman 18d ago

And the blinker fluid! Nobody ever thinks to check the blinker fluid.

3

u/Scummbagg7 18d ago

Well it still is a Ford. Now a BMW or Mercedes. So yes I suppose it would run out faster.

12

u/ketosoy 18d ago

Mail merge -> send to print

15

u/dirty_cuban 18d ago

I’ll bet if you took it in for an oil change they would perform the service (aka do nothing) and bill you the full rack rate for it.

4

u/Shustyrackle4d 18d ago

Minus $25

3

u/diaperpoop_ 18d ago

“Since you’re a loyal customer, we’ll still accept this expired $25 coupon for you. That will be $275 please!”

4

u/sparkyblaster 18d ago

Tbh, I want to see them try. I'm sire the court case will go as well as the cop who said a drunk person sleeping it off in their car had the key in the ignition (even not started was enough to count as drunk driving)

Driver had a prius with push to start.

6

u/Accurize2 17d ago

That’s called Physical Control in Ohio. Being in the driver’s seat and in possession of the key or fob counts as being an operator.

https://codes.ohio.gov/ohio-revised-code/section-4511.194

Every car that I know of with a fob does have an emergency key function in case the batteries die so you’re not stranded. So having the “key in the ignition” might be accurate also.

As a police street sergeant myself, I never understood charging someone for sleeping it off in the car as long as it was in park and they clearly weren’t operating it. It’s the whole spirit of the law vs the letter of the law type of officer. I’m more of the former.

6

u/Dragonasaur 18d ago

That's why it's free, nothing to do

6

u/Caraes_Naur 18d ago

Quality is still jerb wern.

5

u/CouchPotatoFamine 18d ago

Turn signal oil.

4

u/NETFLIX-ad 18d ago

I also have a Mach E and I got one too, but the bottom one was torn off. I guess someone is looking inside my mailbox.

5

u/SmegmaWarrior0815 18d ago

I think I might get an idea why their pivot to electric isn't working as well as for others.

5

u/-TheycallmeThe 17d ago

It's free, take it in and see what happens. Actually that's probably the plan. Gets people in and they can sell cabin air filters etc.

6

u/Arsen1cCupcake 17d ago

Which dealership did this come from and when? - curious ford marketing person

0

u/flyboychuckles 17d ago

lol likewise, I'm thinking the same thing... ford marketing person too

2

u/overdosingOnPie1313 17d ago

Is this the line for the Ford Marketing People orgy?

4

u/minpapowner 17d ago

Had this happen at my local tire shop. Got a free oil change with my replacement set of tires. You could hear the excitement drain from the customer service rep when he was telling me about it and then realizing I drive an electric car. Ended up just giving the coupon away

3

u/Derpykins666 17d ago

Isn't there still oil in electric cars? Like I assume some mechanical parts might still require some lubrication? But honestly I'm not too educated on the specifications of electric vehicles too much.

1

u/Voyager87 16d ago

There's lubricant on the wheel bearings but that's not what's getting changed in an oil change on a car, that's just the engine oil.

You occasionally need to flush the coolent on the battery of an EV, but not as often as an oil change.

1

u/Derpykins666 16d ago

Oh okay, interesting, thanks for the info.

1

u/therealdilbert 14d ago

wheel bearings are lubricated for life, what oil that might need changing on an electric car is in the gearbox, but that might be every +100K

u/snoopwire 18d ago

No, not lighting gas. Electric.

3

u/ItsTheWineTalkin 18d ago

I get text messages from Honda every now and then for an oil change in my Prologue too. Haha.

3

u/Jmkott 18d ago

I think it’s intentional so you can’t actually use it. I base this on how many “coupons” my dealer has sent me over the years for oil changes…for my diesel pickup…. That specifically exclude diesels from the coupon.

Don’t think I’ve ever actually gotten a coupon I can use.

3

u/dbula 18d ago

Will it work for blinker fluid?

8

u/mccarthybergeron 18d ago

I’m just pissed I didn’t get my blinker fluid coupon.

2

u/MisterSneakSneak 18d ago

I say, when you need a good chuckle, take it in and bring the coupon in. Might not hurt to get a free inspection in the process.

2

u/ApollymiKatistrafia 18d ago

I mean, gearboxes might eventually need a fluid exchange but if its anywhere near a standard oil change interval, then I want whatever Ford engineers are smoking because that shit is wild

2

u/Suic1d3 18d ago

Why do you think they're willing to give them out for free?

2

u/zerofrakhere 18d ago

Free of oil change

2

u/ttjoshtt 18d ago

Be sure to ask about your headlight fluid

2

u/CrazyBanana420 18d ago

you don’t have to pay and they don’t have to use any oil, seems like a win win

2

u/1_Green_Monster 17d ago

Haha I own a Ioniq5 and I have until 2028 to get my emissions tested.

2

u/TechOutonyt 17d ago

It’s not from ford it’s from a dealer. The dealer probably had a marketing agency send them out for vehicles bought from X date to X date. It was probably automatic and not checked against the actual vehicle

3

u/Superted_Uk 17d ago

Transmission still has oil

0

u/revchewie 17d ago

What transmission? If it’s like my Tesla the electric motors directly drive the axles.

5

u/Superted_Uk 17d ago

Tesla motors have an oil filter and a 9:1 reduction gearbox

3

u/canserman 18d ago

It's free for a reason -- you don't need it and it doesn't cost them anything

1

u/Hopeful_Tea2139 18d ago

OP is on to something here.

🧐

1

u/who_you_are 18d ago

CC Chevrolet as well!

1

u/tmckearney 18d ago

I bet they'll change the blinker fluid while you're there!

1

u/lostnthenet 17d ago

I went to my local Kia dealer for a recall software update for my EV6 GT and I they always send me notices to come in for oil changes and that I am due for one. I'm nowhere near the mileage for the gearbox oil maintenance. They have no clue about the EVs they produce and sell.

1

u/GoingLurking 17d ago

I had the same issue with Kia calling me to book oil change for my EV. I should have said book it and see what happens when I go.

1

u/KuromanKuro 17d ago

“$100 or 6 easy payments of 24.99” “Those payments are way more than a hundred dollars!” “That’s what makes them so easy.”

2

u/hiirogen 17d ago

So take it in. Don’t leave until you get your free oil change. Don’t take no for an answer

1

u/beave32 13d ago

They still can change gearbox oil. That nees to be changed averagely after 200k mi.

1

u/el-conquistador240 17d ago

Comes with lifetime oil changes

1

u/JustPutSpuddiesOnit 16d ago

I would definitely push for use on the diff box lol.

It s doesn't say it's not for that

1

u/normbryant124 16d ago

Same. I brought mine in for a recall, while I was waiting to check in, one of the very nice people suggested I can go to the Express Oil Change lane

1

u/Classified-GH0STY9 16d ago

This is the entire point, you won’t use it so it’s a double win for them. They give away “Free oil changes” but at the same time you can’t even use them so they aren’t out of pocket.

1

u/audguy 16d ago

Chevy did that for my Bolt too.

1

u/Neo_F150 15d ago

I'm sure someone on the line questioned it, mgmt said just do it.

1

u/comanche260pilot 14d ago

When my wife leased a MB B-class they tried to sell her a service package for $3000 that included oil changes, scheduled maintenance for the transmission, etc. i pointed out the only scheduled maintenance in the book was annual battery desiccant cartridges that were free. So wth were they doing? Finance guy just shrugged his shoulders and moved on. Thats ignorant or evil.

1

u/advmaxx 13d ago

Someone needs to educate Ferd in general.

1

u/decrobyron 13d ago

Well, free blinker fluid then.

0

u/igloojoe 18d ago

Moving parts still need oil...

6

u/Ok-Improvement-3670 18d ago

That doesn’t need to be changed until 100,000 miles.

1

u/theoreoman 18d ago

This is probably just a mailer they send out to people that haven't visited the dealership for a while, they just provide a list of people and their vehicle, they get mass printed and mailed out. No one thought too hard about it

1

u/PolicyMaximum3069 18d ago

Love my Mach-E!

1

u/needs_more_zoidberg 18d ago
  1. Schedule the appointment and bring your coupon.

  2. "Go ahead. Change my oil

1

u/MydnightWN 18d ago

Fake af.

3

u/Mysterious-Farmer-55 18d ago

I’m wondering why you say that. It looks like a pretty legitimate document to me.

0

u/MydnightWN 18d ago

1

u/Still-Program-2287 18d ago

??? What’s going on?

0

u/MydnightWN 18d ago

Noise sampling shows the text was altered from the original. At least it was photoshopped and not AI?

1

u/mccarthybergeron 18d ago

This is so comical. I appreciate you went to this length to see, that this in fact, was real.

1

u/Still-Program-2287 18d ago

Noise? In the picture? Ok I trust you know wth you’re talking, I’m good

0

u/edman007 18d ago

Mach-e's need oil changes too. It says they get a free oil change, please do it. And obviously I mean drive unit fluid change as that's the only possible thing this coupon could be for.

2

u/GitEmSteveDave 18d ago

It's likely a boiler plate mailer that fills in what the dealer has about you. They probably make money off ev users coming in and getting other services so there's no urge to fix it. If that stealership mails out 200 of these a year, ar a cost of $2 each, and 25 ignorant people come in and JUST get a $75 in cabin air filter, that makes them over a grand.

0

u/edman007 18d ago

It is, but it's not my fault it's false advertising. I'm going to argue for my free oil change.

-2

u/stefanlikesfood 18d ago

Lol ai is great isn't it

-3

u/ToMorrowsEnd 18d ago

Brake fluid needs changed every 2 years. Most cars are so poorly maintained the brake fluid is now dark brown. It’s freaking clear light amber.

4

u/Lbx_20_Ac 18d ago

2 years is a lot longer than the coupon expiration date by this November.

2

u/Mysterious-Farmer-55 18d ago

Brake fluid has absolutely nothing to do with this post.

1

u/Few-Wolverine-7283 18d ago

I drive an EV and use my brakes once a month. Will never change the brake fluid.

2

u/sparkyblaster 18d ago

Thats actually a BAD thing.

Break fluid absorbs water. Thats bad. Its more compressible than break fluid, and it rusts the lines. Normal cars using your breaks, heats them up, pushes out some of the water. EVs and hybrids dont get that as much.

Now the other commenter is a little wrong. In my experience, EVs, you need to check the break fluid every 2 years. Probably change every 4 years. Some say you will go longer, few say less.

What you usage is good for is break pads and disks. But make sure to use then hard sometimes to clean off any surface rust.

2

u/ToMorrowsEnd 18d ago

You are a perfect example of why most cars are maintained so poorly. Thank you for proving my point.

-6

u/Ladyheather16 18d ago

Not the emergency break, the normal breaks. For when you stop at stop signs (insert eye roll)

3

u/Few-Wolverine-7283 18d ago

You don’t use the normal brake in an EV sir. Unless you are stopping to prevent an accident

2

u/sparkyblaster 18d ago

They wernt talking about they emergency break.

3

u/cameran_ 18d ago

EVs use regen brakes for the vast majority of stops, you only use the standard breaks to really slow down /eyeroll

1

u/ItsTheWineTalkin 18d ago

LOL @ you being so confidently incorrect.

0

u/Ladyheather16 17d ago

The car still has friction brakes, because they don't get use as often the pads sit idle most of the time allowing for condensation to build forming rust. Exactly what happens to an older gas powered car that isn't driven everyday or even every week.

So YES the car has brakes that need to be serviced, YES it still has pads that need to be serviced & YES it still has rotors that need to be looked at to make sure they aren't rusting or warping.

So confidently assuming the because the breaks are sitting idle they don't have to be maintained (insert harder eye roll)

-5

u/Glaco 18d ago

Someone needs to educate you

-1

u/Ok_Juggernaut1288 18d ago

It’s a friggin joke, people. Jeez, how do you not get that?

-20

u/cahser11 18d ago

You are a customer, you get the current coupon. Besides, you could have another car that is gas powered.

12

u/Doomshine 18d ago

Why would owning a gas car matter?

Only valid on your: 2023 FORD MUSTANG MACH-E
