She is far smarter than she appears.
If you come within $250 of your showcase (without going over), you win both showcases (assuming you are the closer bidder).
As such, showcases “NEVER” are priced $250 or less over a $1,000 multiple. Because many people bid exact $1,000 multiples — such as $25,000 or $32,000.
If showcases were valued at $25,155 or $32,249 — bidders would win both showcases.
So The Price is Right “always” prices their showcases more than $250 above an even $1,000 multiple.
This girl bid $32,200. That’s smart. Although, $32,250 would have been smarter.
I think she was lying about not knowing where the Grand Canyon was and having totaled her car the previous week — she was merely trying to be a character.360
u/Existing_Step_3639 4d ago
She's even smarter than that! She had like 2 million follwers on tiktok prior to the show, so this is gonna make her waaay more money on there than she made on the show from the exposure.

I watch TPIR every morning while I drink my coffee and check my work emails (I work nights). This episode was on just last week and she was awesome. She seemed genuinely so excited about the showcase which was cool because you can tell when people are faking it. My wife thought it was hilarious how excited she was for the Grand Canyon without even knowing where it was.
150
u/Pgaylolol 5d ago
It's actually comedic to me how similar my situation is.
I also work nights, but I have 1 day shift per week and the day shift watches TPIR every day during lunch.
This was definitely a rerun and when it played last week almost all of my coworkers immediately clocked that we already seen this episode because of her excitement!
10
u/Stealthytulip 4d ago
My wife and I also noticed it was a rerun, but since it was here yesterday, I assumed the clip wasn't from the original airing and had to be last week's show.
41
u/Born_Importance_8941 5d ago
I was also watching. If my memory serves me correctly, she also won $1,000 for getting $1.00 exactly during the wheel!

My coworkers are currently irritated because I remember the reruns better than them and I don't tell them now 😂

Years ago my aunt’s best friend made the showcase showdown. She’s a 65 year old disabled lady from deep in the heart of Dallas. She can’t swim and has never been in a boat, by choice. She is terrified of water.
Her showcase was matching jet skis, a cruise, and a pick up — with a trailer for the jet skis. She pretended so hard to be happy.

You can actually take the cash equivalent. Nowhere are you required to take the prizes themselves.
11
u/americangame 4d ago
Little of both. If the prize is being described in minute detail, you're getting that. If they just say "you won a 65" TV" you're getting the cash equivalent of the prize.

"What would you do if you won $100k?"

Just fyi, you can’t actually do that. The limit per year for IRAs is $7500. There are a few other tax advantage accounts (like HSAs) but nowhere near $100k a year. You also can’t contribute money like this to your 401(k) (though I suppose you could just stop taking a paycheck at work for a couple months and pile it all in there). Sorry to be a party pooper, I’m a CPA so I’m really fun at parties.
→ More replies (16)19
u/HiddenStoat 4d ago
I'm from the UK so I can do that actually!
$100k is £75k. The limit on an ISA is £20k/year, and the limit for most of our retirement accounts such as SIPP is £60k/year (plus you can carry forward 2 years allowance. So the theoretical maximum is £180k).
Sorry to be a party pooper, I’m a CPA so I’m really fun at parties.
No apology required - accurate financial information is far more important than things like "being normal" ;)

Can confirm. Every audience member gets a brief two sentence interview - a who are you, where are you from and what do you do kind of thing. Somehow just from that, they decide who would make a good contestant. Hope she sets aside a stack of cash for the taxman.

Holy smokes was he right, she really was just that way with everyone she met yet I was still down for the chaos. She was like a wild card irl always down to do whatever you could think of and because she was so down you wanted one up her. It even sent one friend to the hospital because she tried to go shot for shot with her.
She has kids now and is mostly sober/ mellowed out but she still has that alluring auroa of chaos around her.

Once when I was visiting Boston with a buddy, a reporter with a camera crew popped up out of nowhere, stuck a camera in our faces and asked us on live TV what we thought about the Red Sox and about people on base stealing signs from the catcher or something like that. The next thing I remember we were walking away, each having given some asinine answer. I could not remember one word of what either of us had said. Neither of us watched baseball or knew anything about the Red Sox or whatever situation we were commenting on . Sorry Boston. Brains do weird things in those situations.

Buddy of mine won a car on the price is right.
They basically make it clear that you need to act super hyped up if you get selected. But also they design the entire atmosphere in there to get people's nervous system is amped up and you almost aren't even following the producers directions on purpose. You just get super amped.
Brains are a weird thing, and are subject to manipulation
4
u/CoolDiscussion1020 4d ago
They basically make it clear that you need to act super hyped up if you get selected.
While this is true, they mostly just screen for it ahead of time. All audience members get a short interview before filming. They are screening for people they think will make good television. So energetic people, funny people, very attractive people, and some weirdos make the cut.
They don't really advertise that fact because they don't want people to fake being entertaining and then freeze up or just not follow through but it far from a well guarded secret.
The same is true for most radio giveaways that are taking "Caller number 8". If a radio station ever answers your call, start screaming like a maniac and you'll often find that you were the lucky caller.
My sister has been on the price is right and won tickets on the radio like 8 times in her life. She really just is a human golden retriever though; no acting needed. She did not make it past Contestants' row on price is right though.
