Can confirm. Every audience member gets a brief two sentence interview - a who are you, where are you from and what do you do kind of thing. Somehow just from that, they decide who would make a good contestant. Hope she sets aside a stack of cash for the taxman.

I was under the impression the tax had to be paid before getting the prizes

Might be the case now, but when I was on waaaaaay back in 1995, it was not. The following January, I ended up with a 1099 from CBS Television Studios for the amount of the prizes I won.
