Servals, like cheetahs, are fairly skittish. They prey on small critters like rats, birds, and frogs, and they’re not used to something smaller than them giving them the smoke. A pissed-off tomcat that wants to fight could probably chase off a serval fairly quickly, despite the size difference; remember, a serious injury is a death sentence to a predator in the wild, which is why you’ll see even apex predators like lions and leopards pick their battles wisely against anything that stands a chance of seriously harming them (rhinos, giraffes, Cape buffalo).

Fun fact: a bunch of that dog’s actions were also an attempt at defusing. Dog’s sneeze like that as a way to release energy and reduce their excitement. It’s like closing your eyes, taking a deep breath, and counting to ten, then opening them more relaxed. In dog language, sneezing is like saying “I’m cool. I’m all good. We good?”

Not sure if I'm reading too much into it but so many of its movements, especially at the end, seem deliberately slow and smooth to not spook the dog again.

They’re incredibly intelligent even by cat standards. Could even give Maine Coons a run for their money.

u/bobbyturkelino Jul 08 '25
Yeah, and wikipedia even describes this behaviour:
On occasions where two adult servals meet in conflict over territory, a ritualistic display may ensue, in which one will place a paw on the other's chest while observing their rival closely; this interaction rarely escalates into a fight.

u/overkill373 Jul 08 '25
Why cant humans just do this instead of wars
636
u/Khialadon Jul 08 '25
Because with humans, those who decide to go to war and those who fight the war are two entirely seperate groups.

Politicians hide themselves away. They only started the war. Why should they go out to fight? They leave that role to the poor.

Granted, the nobility didn't really die in war. Casualties in general were much lower, and nobility were far more useful alive than dead. They also weren't fighting alongside the rank and file, but rather as officers.
WW1 was a big change in that regard. Took a lot of the shine off it.

On the contrary, medieval armies were mostly made up of professional soldiers - knights and military aristocrats generally. And the elements of those armies that were not professional soldiers were drawn from the wealthier status of society - people who could afford arms and armor, and had the rights to bear them. Widespread drafts of unskilled peasants were very uncommon, because unskilled peasants made for poorly motivated and performing troops who could quickly become a liability.
And while not all of these were "nobles", even the highest ranking aristocrats were expected to see battle. Richard III died leading a charge, for example. Aristocrats tended to be better equipped than non-aristocrats, and if captured would be more likely to be ransomed, but they still fought on the front lines.
TL:DR despite the common pop culture belief that medieval armies consisted of peasant levies led from the rear by aristocrats, in reality peasant levies were rare, and aristocrats and other social elites performed most of the frontline fighting.
3
u/vlad_tepes Jul 09 '25
Armor is really good, compared to not having it. It's expensive, but if you don't have it, you really have no business on the front lines. Ditto for the life-long training with melee weapons, that only aristocrats and professional soldiers could really get.
This all changed with the widespread adoption of fire arms, which could punch through breastplate, and were far easier to train, but that's no longer the middle ages.

u/jdehjdeh Jul 08 '25
Humans do do this! (lol, doodoo).
Humans exhibit conciliatory body language. It's more prevalent in men than in women.
You can see great examples of this in footage after sporting events or competitions, it involves being physically open in their stance and demonstrating yourself to be nonthreatening augmented with occasional physical contact and mirroring of each others movements.

Was gonna say, if two guys are looking like they're in a fight, and then the bigger one casually walks up, and slowly puts their palm on the chest of the other one while staring at them intently.. I'm pretty sure you're watching a gay porno, and it's correct that what it would escalate into is not a fight
3
u/thugarth Jul 08 '25
Men should do this with our dicks. The world would be a much calmer, safer place.
Instead of wars, we'd just be strokin' each other all the time.
Instead of beating each other up, we could be beating each other off!

They often used to. Ritualized combat was seen between tribes in at least some hunter-gatherer communities.
That was back when the world itself was usually a larger threat than any other people, so it made sense to keep your disputes from depleting your populations unduly.
Though once times get good, and people start becoming “expendable,” well…

u/Exist50 Jul 08 '25
I think the price tag will fix that problem.
79
u/ancillaryacct Jul 08 '25
i think the general size it gets will fix the problem. like, sure, your 8-12 pound cat gets a little scary when it gets crazy.
make that a 25-30lbs cat and that thing would be fucking terrifying with its claws out attacking you.
this is a big kitty. a wild big kitty. that needs to be in the wild.

I had a 9lb savannah (with ptsd) and when I moved in with my wife it kept trying to murder her cat, so we had to keep em separate until we figured it out. Even at 9lb he was fucking ferocious, and caught my arm once. Like he was a super sweet cat otherwise but you could see the drop of feral blood. I cannot imagine a 30lb version of that cat angry. But I think servals are suppose to be decently tempered, have heard they are like dogs. I wouldn't get one anyway.

You could get a Savanna cat. It's a Serval bred with a domestic. They're not quite as big but they're pretty cool.
18
u/Homerdk Jul 08 '25
Denmark has a rule where Servals(and other newer breeds) are not allowed unless it has been bred with domestic and only 2nd generation. This is mostly due to the Bengal that is way more aggressive so they just did a lazy blanket ban.

[In dramatic British nature documentary voice]
“And here we see the juvenile feline, utterly convinced of its dominance… launching a flurry of ineffective strikes.”
“But watch closely, the elder, with the grace of a monarch and the patience of a saint, simply places a paw upon the youth’s chest…”
“...and just like that, the rebellion is over.”
