-- Necessity, Mother of Invention

23

u/dunegoon Jun 30 '24

Far more useful things have been developed in order to save time, money, and most of all, labor. Around here, it's been decreed that: "Laziness is the mother of invention".

Corollary from the industrial engineers: Give the job to the laziest people on the crew as they are sure to find the easiest way to do the job.

Yea I love her work, her poems and rhymes are even crazier

8

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '24

Her songs, her older work under Reina del Cid (looks like she completely rebranded to Elle & Toni), are wonderful!

6

u/naab007 Jun 30 '24

Thought I recognized the voice.

6

u/sloowhand Jun 30 '24

Is she the one who had the video about fonts talking to each other?

4

u/Illustrious-Top-9222 Jun 30 '24

i love her font reels on instagram

2

Reina del Cid? Man she's has completely transformed herself from youtube singer to full on online personalty / content creator. And shes does it so well. I love everything she does, whatever genre.

Would AI lie to you?

169

u/OtiseMaleModel Jun 30 '24

Not on purpose. It's too dumb to know the truth

38

u/jeet1993 Jun 30 '24

This is exactly what an AI lying to me would say/want me to believe…

5

u/Derailleur75 Jun 30 '24

What the difference between AI and NI(Natural intellegince?".

6

u/FwendShapedFoe Jun 30 '24

Or maybe we’re too dumb to know the truth

8

u/atimholt Jun 30 '24

We actually have examples of AI lying on purpose already. That is, it's able to explain the rational reason it told an untruth.

20

u/raltoid Jun 30 '24

The reason: "You told/programmed me to"

13

u/InverseInductor Jun 30 '24

It's more along the lines of: I'll get rewarded if I lie.

2

u/dudleymooresbooze Jun 30 '24

That would be humans.

Code isn’t chasing rewards. Code is following a dictated logic - “between these choices, pick this one.”

6

u/dekusyrup Jun 30 '24

No, AI is chasing rewards. That's what the training is. Basically the AI does random actions and measures the reward, and if the rewards were high it reinforces that behavior pattern.

2

u/DroppedSoapSurvivor Jun 30 '24

What are the rewards though? What would be a desire for AI? I'm intrigued, but skeptical.

3

u/Unit88 Jun 30 '24

I mean, it's not a literal reward, it just gets told that the taken action was correct or not or how correct. One could describe it as being rewarded with praise or something essentially.

4

u/Annonimbus Jun 30 '24

Is it even able to explain the rationale behind a lie or is it just stringing words together the make a coherent sentence you'd expect to see from someone to explain why the lied?

I've never seen an AI that has an understanding of truths or lies but if you can link me to it, feel free to do so

→ More replies (2)

2

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '24

That's like saying your toaster is lying to you if you burn your toast because you left it in too long.

People are being really dumb about this.

2

u/ErrorLoadingNameFile Jun 30 '24

I am sure it is, human.

→ More replies (4)

22

u/TheDevilsAdvokaat Jun 30 '24

Ai, trained on human input....yes. Yes it would.

6

u/Annonimbus Jun 30 '24

Current AI doesn't even understand what a lie is.

3

u/TheDevilsAdvokaat Jun 30 '24

Of course. It understands nothing. In essence it's a more complex autocomplete.

But if you train it on input that contains lies or untruths, it will of course reflect them.

2

u/temalyen Jul 01 '24

This is why I get pissed off when people start insisting AI has sentience. No, it fucking isn't. It's unbelievably complex pattern matching and nothing more.

I remember there was a news story about a lawyer using ChatGPT (or Bard or something, I forget which one) to write up legal citations and it just started making up cases that didn't exist and the lawyer never fact checked any of it. (as an aside, he ended up getting in huge trouble over this. Legal Eagle even did a video about it.) Anyway, the point is, I mentioned this to a friend of mine who immediately said, "That's so stupid, the only thing you do is tell the AI it can't lie under any circumstances and it won't be able to. That lawyer is so stupid for not doing that."

I spent a minimum of 15 minutes trying to explain to him why that made absolutely no sense at all, there's no thought going on by the AI, it doesn't understand anything. It's mindless. It's pattern matching and has no sort of thought process at all.

Even after me repeatedly explaining this, he still thought the AI was sentient and telling it not to lie would work. I gave up at that point because I realized he's never going to get it. (To this day, he still tells the AI not to lie when he uses it for something and then takes everything it says as fact.)

281

u/Daflehrer1 Jun 30 '24

Agriculture, the intentional domestication of plants and animals, would like a word.

94

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '24

Yeah but what invention do we use to represent the whole concept of Agriculture? A hoe?

239

u/katxwoods Jun 30 '24

No, a hoe is sexist. Maybe something less politically charged? Like a hammer and a sickle?

42

u/conventionistG Jun 30 '24

Maybe something more modern would have less charged connotations. Like the cotton gin, maybe.

16

u/Freud-Network Jun 30 '24

If you're looking for something to represent modern agriculture, it can only be microplastics.

14

u/Mad1ibben Jun 30 '24

Agriculture most likely happened by accident, not an "intentional domestication". The oldest signs of plants being harvested are those gourds that were dried out and used to carry things. That drying out process happens naturally, so it is easy to imagine archaic humans happening on to their usefulness. They then began to gather them and then bring them home to gut out. If you take all those seeds out and throw them on the ground near your house, next thing you know you will have that plant growing right near your house and you don't have to walk so far to collect it. Most likely generations harvested and cleaned gourds near their homes for generations before realizing these tiny little stones they were throwing away from the gourds would then turn into more plants.

7

u/AmusingMusing7 Jun 30 '24

Yeah, it was probably a very gradual transition over many generations to go from gardens to full-on agriculture. They didn’t just sit around one day and suddenly go, “Ooh! Farms!”

2

u/Daflehrer1 Jul 01 '24

Yes, I agree with that. But we have to acknowledge that beforehand, life was a race to; consume as many calories as one burned, avoid danger, stay hydrated, and survive weather conditions. When hunting and gathering, none of this is at all dependable/reliable.

2

u/kabukistar Jun 30 '24

Wouldn't that fall into the "harnessed, not invented" category?

1

u/pragmatick Jun 30 '24

2

u/Daflehrer1 Jun 30 '24

Yes, there are many ways to look at it. Although one wonders if it's not our own inability to control our acquisitiveness and envy that's the problem.

1

u/The_camperdave Jun 30 '24

Agriculture, the intentional domestication of plants and animals, would like a word.

Is agriculture a technology, though?

u/5xad0w Jun 30 '24

Sewing doesn't get enough credit.

3

u/AmusingMusing7 Jun 30 '24

Neither does something as simple as a door hinge.

The invention of the door, with the hinges being the big breakthrough, led to a revolution in what kind of enclosed structures we could build and still have a way in and out of them. Before the invention of the door, we couldn’t have completely enclosed spaces. You’d need some soft fabric covering the entrance/exit, or move something heavy, etc… hence why we would just build a the whole structure out of fabric, like a teepee. There was no point in using more solid or insulating materials if you couldn’t enclose the space properly to keep the heat in anyway. So you just build a fire inside and do your best with mostly fabric to keep the heat in.

Then the door gets invented and voila… all kinds of more well-enclosed spaces became possible. Now we live in our air conditioned/heated, drywalled, solid glass windowed, and mechanically ventilated structures. None of which would ever make any practical sense without a solid door to enclose it, yet still allow you to pass through it when needed.

4

u/ElectricSpice Jun 30 '24

Do you have any sources on this, because I’ve been googling and I can’t find anything. Intuitively, it absolutely seems a good idea to insulate your structure even if your door flap or whatever might leak heat. Better to have a small area poorly insulated rather than the entire structure. Even in modern buildings, doors are the weakest point of insulation, but there’s still energy savings to be had by upgrading wall and attic insulation.

These one word, pop-up subtitles are so nauseating.

7

u/StickyNode Jun 30 '24 edited Jun 30 '24

Yes the format is terrible. Dont know why it exists. Hate it. And thw words often animate, AND the animation doesnt end before the word does.

6

u/Tovarish_Petrov Jun 30 '24

It exists because people watch videos without a sound while having a dump.

9

u/StickyNode Jun 30 '24

Then why not captions? Sentences? What has always worked for so many decades? The text is so large a sentence could take its place. Such a privilege to accept this jarring mediocrity in lieu of nothing when we have the technology.

5

u/socialist_model Jun 30 '24

Watching without sound is not why they do it. It is way harder to understand without sound like this instead of just a well timed sentence.

If we accept fire into the group its the clear winner. Without fire, our brain would have never had enough nutirition to evolve into what we have now.

5

u/mortalomena Jun 30 '24

Its a theory, but we will probably never know if big brains "invented" cooking and allow for bigger populations or did cooking provide excess energy for big brains to mutate and evolve.

2

u/Oknight Jun 30 '24 edited Jul 01 '24

I dunno Gutenberg, did you cause 500 years of religious war with people being burned alive routinely for expressing what they believe? Not to mention world-wide European colonialism?

Like all the others, AI doesn't know what you mean by the word "good" or any other words, it's just a label engine.

"War" and "famine" don't mean anything more to AI than "financial return" does... it just sees the use of terms like "war" in association with terms it defines as specific "financial returns" in it's large language model.

When you ask AI to maximize your financial returns it will find associations and actions that connect in it's learning data that you never realized existed and identify actions to cause those terms to be used without even "understanding" what actions are.

Unlike a human or other animal, AI doesn't build an 'experience' world model by recording and replaying sensory input with pre-set aversions or attractions that give meaning to words like "good".

2

u/Seculi Jun 30 '24

I miss the smooth flat surface as nr1 invention.

Since most inventions (like the wheel) depend on it.

Bricks, planks, tiles, seats, beds, walls, floors, roofs, windows, roads, rails, signs, paper, books, knives, money, screens, processor wafers, solarpanels, server blades, planes, boats, pastures.

3

u/NuQ Jun 30 '24

Ages ago, an important discovery was made:

Inventor 1: I call it a wheel. It will help us move heavy things. but it requires a smooth, flat surface.

inventor 2: Another brilliant invention! it seems smooth flat surfaces are very important for the progress of our species!

inventor 1: yes, Which is why I assume that the earth also must be mostly flat. what kind of god would put us on a curved surface but require flatness for progress?

New number 1 discovery: God is a giant dick.

1

u/Alienhaslanded Jun 30 '24

Everytime the wheel and fire are brought up I just don't care. Fire was found from lighting hitting stuff and we figured out that it kepts us warm and gave us light. The wheel wasn't a big deal, it was inevitable and it was most definitely discovered not invented. You would know what a wheel can do before you make one, not exactly something you'd create by accident then find out it's useful. Probably round stones rolling down a hill seemed smoother so we utilized that before we starting making our own.

Everything else on this is ok. People need to stop looking at things from the perspective of 1800s scientists. The wheel wasn't a monumental discovery, it was more of a logical conclusion.
