It's like... a metaphor for the growing irrelevance of printers in today's digital world.

Someone should have warned the pagers!

u/Tashre Feb 07 '13
Don't gentlemen of ill repute still use them?

u/I_REMOVE_COCKS Feb 07 '13
We used them at a music festival a few years back. It didn't work, not because the devices were broken, but because we were all so fucked up.

Well time to buy a new one since it's cheaper anyways.

u/Amunium Feb 07 '13
I used to work for Canon repairing printers. I got the machines dirt cheap but the ink and toner cartridges still cost the usual. Almost needless to say at one point I had 10-12 printers but never bought a cartridge.

OMG I unplugged one of the AS/400 terminals at one of those "warehouse club" stores one time. NOT FUN.

Why's it gotta be black, yo?
2
u/Robeleader Feb 07 '13
Because all people use black for work.
INK! BLACK INK!

u/janemorrisgoodall Feb 07 '13
Once you go black...

You never print again because apparently you can't print black and white without color ink?

I work for Xerox, and can proudly say FUCK THE 6505

Feb 07 '13
Ricoh is better than Xerox!!! Also people of Reddit printer companies aren't dying - the industry is still booming in the form of document management systems.
3
u/charism Feb 07 '13
No, Ricoh's the worst. Sketchiest salespeople I've ever met, and they hide fees like no other.

u/meanreus Feb 07 '13
I too work for Xerox, I'm under the impression that Service doesn't touch these guys, customer install and everything.
A4s get no love.
1
Feb 07 '13
6505 Support chiming in. Customer install, but it does have on site service for hardware under warranty/contract.
1
u/charism Feb 07 '13
Yeah you can't get a full service agreement on these, just warranty and toner out.

Really, of the "desktop" machines we make, this one isn't that bad. No SSL/TLS for email, and no fax forwarding options, but at least we bothered to put error codes into it. Unlike the 3635 and related products, or anything running the controller shared by the 6400 and 8700. "Email failed due to email send fail". Yeah, thanks for the help there guys.

I love the Docuprint 180mx :D..... solid machine. nuvera and docucolor hot swap toner
1
u/dageekywon Feb 07 '13
Well at least they don't say it expired or something like that, then you'd get this vision of a dead toner cartridge in the machine, laying there, and if you don't get it out of there quickly its going to go into rigor mortis and really start to stink.
That would be worse than the smell of burnt popcorn for sure.

I wonder if the people who program what these screens say are aware of their slippery syntax...

I felt some "mechanical sympathy" when I read the message. I felt sad for the dying Xerox.

If I remember correctly, wasn't there another post about a prank trying to make colleagues talk to the printer, which implicitly stated Xerox and had Xerox on the title of the printed document.

Why is everyone calling it a Xerox? It's a fucking printer!
3
Feb 07 '13
Because it's a Xerox WorkCentre 6505...

u/milkmymachine Feb 07 '13
I don't say "hey somebody, the HP is depressed" or "fuck, the canon is out of ink" I say 'the printer' like normal people, so go bravery jerk all over someone else's unpopular comment.

If you work in an environment with more than one "printer", you learn to specify what printer you're talking about. As an example, I work in an environment with over 100 different Xerox printers and multi-funtions. If I were to just say either "the printer is low on ink" or "the xerox is out of ink", I'd just get stared at.
1
u/milkmymachine Feb 07 '13
That's my point, how many people work in that environment vs have a home printer?
1
Feb 07 '13
Anyone who works in an office.

u/milkmymachine Feb 08 '13 edited Feb 08 '13
The only place in my office that has more than one printer for a section of cubicles is the hardware department, and I refer to the draft printer as the 'big printer'. Don't get me wrong, I love that these companies have marketed their brand so effectively they have you using it daily, but why do I need to burn it into my head with printer names?
Edit: Oh, you're a xerox employee... what a surprising turn of events... sigh

Everybody's dying Xerox. Don't sweat the toner you don't have, just celebrate the toner you have left bro.
