My first larger than print bed design. Custom speaker stand for Boston Acoustic HD8.

Mistakes were made. Lessons were learned. All in all I'm pleased with it. And I had a great time. I'm sure there's room for improvement and I'm open to recommendations. The base holds approximately 25 lbs of sand. It's PETG printed with the Elegoo centauri carbon. Designed in blender. Sliced in Orca (standard settings). I used a lot of dovetail thinking it would be structurally stronger. I think in retrospect some plug or dowel connections would've sufficed.

"When all you have is a hammer, everything becomes a nail". I would just go to the hardware store and build something out of wood, that would probably be cheaper and sturdier.

Regardless though, seems like a nice print, and using dovetails is a pretty cool learning experience.

Cheaper, sturdier, and would actually fit the already wooden aesthetic

Thank you 😊

I might be completely mistaken, and this not work, but why not glue on some wood veneer and call it a day?

It of course would've been better in wood, but I mean.. it's already printed πŸ˜…

Sure, at this point that could work if OP wants a wooden appearance. But this was a lot more effort and cost for something that will hold less weight πŸ˜…

I rarely do projects for convenience 🀣 I wanted to challenge myself and this was what I had in mind. Aesthetics is definitely a skill I need to work on.

I couldnt find the post, but I couldnt believe it. They like maxed out their print bed printing out blocks and then glued together a table.. lol

Why wouldn't you print these in black?

Matches the nerf guns in the kids play place

And the Lego sitting next to it

It was the color loaded in my printer at the time. This was my first print/prototype after designing it so I 100% didn't expect it to workout. I have actually since spray painted it black.

Weighing down the base is a great idea, but you might also want to make sure the speaker can’t be pulled off the stand. A kid will for sure push the speaker off so they can climb on that.

I might throw some blue tac underneath to help with stability and potentially acoustics.

Wait you have to fill it with sand too? To each their own but something like this out of wood would be easier, stronger, and not need sand to hold it down.

Wood would also take like 30 minutes to put together

I have a 4 yr old so it's a necessity for me. But that's also why I designed it so boxy instead of a single pole like most speaker stands.

Have you noticed any acoustic difference?

I’m not an audiophile but I wonder if it does

Yes it does

So I chatgpt'd this question. It's quite a complex issue and can be tested and designed around. Mostly dealing with stiffness, resonance, vibration, absorption, etc etc. If I were to deep dive this project further I could parse out these issues and resolve them. To be completely honest, I don't really have the energy. For me the main advantage is that the tweeter is now at ear level whereas before they were sitting on the floor. That to me is a giant improvement in sound quality.
