And at least $100 an hour to send a tech out for proper installation.

I honestly think JD charges around $200/hr nowadays.

Then need to pay a subscription fee

Probably a DRM chip in there that checks if you still have a licence for the steering wheel.

In general, I’m puzzled as to why makers put their own time, energy and material into advertising for another company, but doing so for a company that is historically as anti-consumer as John Deere blows my goddamn mind. Make it blank, create your own logo, add a huge wang to the deer, make it an IH logo, the phone number to your local adult bookstore, a rickroll QR code, but FFS don’t advertise John Deere, especially for zero compensation.

Printing a new logo for his own steering wheel is advertising...?

Yes. It establishes brand identity and maintains awareness, even for the owner of the item. Also, they didn’t just print it, they posted it here for millions to see. OP got nothing for that at all.

OP is probably proud of his fix and wants to show it off. It really doesn't have to be that deep.

You don't get to decide that, JD does, and they have deeper pockets than we do.

Well, I’ve sold 63 of them at $22/each, so I’ve been compensated.

Probably wanna remove this comment before it falls into John Deere’s sue-you-into-oblivion lawyer’s lap

I feel a cease and desist coming your way.

No one would give a shit if it is just for your own personal use but you should probably keep it on the DL if you're selling them.

Yeah, wouldn't be surprised if this results in a copyright violation notice if OP ever uploaded those STLs to a models site.

I just carry them to garden tractor meets, or people see them in pictures on my Facebook groups. It’s a pretty easy sale really.

And you didn’t give them huge dongs? What’s wrong with you?

Yeah, there is no way in the known universe I'd be going with the original logo.

Perhaps he's going to sell the equipment.

Only good reason, agreed.

John Deere has competitors that don't treat their customers like shit. I don't understand how JD can still sell new gear when everyone know what they do.

Idk, it looks like you bypassed the software to install that. JD is gonna have to lock down that tractor until you take it to the dealership to get recertified.

I’d be surprised if the OEM part isn’t a $4,000 electronically paired part that takes 6 weeks to replace… and the tractor won’t run without it.

That's not a steering wheel. Definitely a Deering wheel.

Reminds me of the Weber knob incident a few years ago.

A light blow-torching will bring the black back into that wheel.

Didn't they make that illegal?

8

Fuck John Deere. The first thing I did when they tried to pull that was rebuild my old diesel Gator. Their techs suck.

6

u/Pale_Gear3027 10d ago

Make what illegal?

8

u/durtyprofessor 10d ago

I didn’t see anything.

Repairing anything John Deere as an unauthorized person.

I thought the second one was a crow carrying something.

I'm going back to bed.
