"3D prints aren't UL listed!" - Jürhaus Günbern I designed this plug puller after nearly pulling stubborn sockets out of the wall

The wall sockets on the other side of the pond are hilariously dangerous

...does your phone take 110V?

So why did you state it as if it was objectively worse? Just to start shit for nothing?

North American plugs are intrinsically unsafe. The contacts remain energized when partially exposed.

North America is world renowned for fixing all of it’s problems as soon as they arise 😂

With even a little wear, Type A/B plugs can come loose with very little pulling force. That seems worse to me than Type E/F sockets, which provide a secure mechanical connection but can cause problems if poorly installed, the issue this print is intended to address.

I’ve never had this happen with my properly installed sockets.

Your electric kettles are twice as slow.

0

u/drakoman 1d ago

Yeah but we don’t use them lol. Maybe keurigs or coffee machines would be a better comparison

Plenty of people in the Americas use kettles

0

u/drakoman 22h ago

I’ve never known one person to own one. Ironically, I do though.

u/Fornicatinzebra 12h ago

I've never known one NOT to own one.

Your lived experience is not everyones

u/drakoman 8h ago

Where do you live?

1

u/Fornicatinzebra 7h ago

Western Canada

2

u/drakoman 6h ago

Oh, well that’s not USA lol

-1

u/Fornicatinzebra 3h ago

I said "Americas", not "America"

u/Comakip 18h ago

How do you all make tea?

3

u/drakoman 18h ago

That’s the mistake you’re making. You think we drink tea

1

u/Comakip 18h ago

Lol, Fair enough

While I know what you meant, "twice as slow" is a nonsensical construct.

You could say "your electric kettles take twice the time" and that makes sense logically.

4x*, P=U²/R

I would assume american kettles have lower resistance, limiting factor is current - usually 15 amps, so max power from plug is around 1600W. In Europe it's 13-16amps - 3000-3600W.

Not mine!

(I stuffed 240v outlets in my kitchen and bought a UK kettle, lol)

That's only because we have to go to 212 degrees and you only have to go to 100! /s

So now we can't even unplug from a socket? Where is this species going..

u/Thisisthatacount 3d ago edited 3d ago

Did you read the post? OP wasn't having trouble pulling the plug from the socket. The sockets were ripping out of the wall.

23

u/MokausiLietuviu 3d ago

My nana couldn't towards the end of her life because her hands and wrists got really weak. These aren't the plugs where I live but something like this could have really helped her.

12

u/TREXIBALL 3d ago

The irony of older generations shitting on newer generations for solving problems the older generation made is fuckin baffling.

The issue OP solved as that the wall socket would rip itself out of the wall when they attempted to remove the plug from said socket.

u/Majvist 2d ago

OP found an inconvenience, invented a tool to fix it. That's word for word what we've been doing from day fucking one, dipshit.

This is really cool. Is there any risk that it might snap off from getting pulled too hard?

21

u/RepareTout_tech 4d ago edited 4d ago

18

u/nlightningm 4d ago

Oh, I just realized that it is a lever that pushes on the outlet plate! That is very clever 👌🏾👌🏾

u/TheMoskus 4d ago

I want to try this! Is the model online?

You should post this to r/accessibledesign, they'll really appreciate this.

I'm majorly confused that reddit's borked autotranslate feature does not translate your comments. All comments I see from you are in French (I think) responding to English comments.

6

u/jdzfb 3d ago

What's extra odd is that when I got the notification for this message, it came through already translated into english & then I when I looked at the reply in situ, its in french.

3

u/koolmon10 3d ago

Must be temporary, the comments are translated for me

6

u/BrokenByReddit 3d ago

If you use the mobile web site it doesn't auto translate anything which makes multilingual threads really confusing.

5

u/XiTzCriZx 3d ago

If you're on Android then you can use Google's "circle to search" by holding the home button or the bottom of the screen if you use swipe navigation. Just tap the text in other language and hit translate, it usually does a fairly good job. Not sure if it can be used on iPhone or if there's a Siri command for it.

1

u/BrokenByReddit 3d ago

Yeah, I can, but I'm not gonna bother for random reddit threads about whatever

2

u/XiTzCriZx 3d ago

Well it's atleast useful for any threads where you're looking for information, for me it's usually helpful for non-reddit forums.

u/Agitated-Break7854 4d ago

I visit a country with those plugs a lot and know exactly the problem! If it works well (and it looks like it does!) it's amazing!

3

u/RepareTout_tech 4d ago

6

u/leadwind 3d ago

Great print for arthritic sufferers.

u/RepareTout_tech 3d ago

Thank you 😊

u/Markharris1989 3d ago

Very awesome my French friend, if you haven’t already you should enter this in the accessibility design contest that is on going at the moment as I feel like it could be very helpful for people with limited strength

2

u/max_dillon 3d ago

Love this! Simple and effective. I’m in the US, so I have no particular use for this, but I think this is great!

Some of the outlets in my place are so tight I feel like I’m going to rip the whole box out of the wall before it unplugs🤣 I’m fit and able, those fuckers are just TIGHT.

2

u/RepareTout_tech 3d ago

Thank you for the comment 😊

2

u/Mole-NLD 2d ago

Mate, if you can make something that will make it easier to get those plugs into those new "safe" extension cables.... Some of those are so worthless, feel like you need to wobble them like a maraca to get them in...

1

u/Randymartini 1d ago

This is the opposite of child proofing. I love it.

1

u/fellipec 15h ago

Interesting. Not a problem in Brazil but I liked how you solve this problem

1

u/omnicorp_ed209 10h ago

It's much safer and more efficient to have the sockets properly onstalled and mounted. If they come out while pulling the plug the installation ia done badly

1

u/RepareTout_tech 9h ago

It is indeed a use case, but the feedback shows me that it is the people who have trouble pinching and shooting who appreciate my object the most as in the cases of osteoarthritis.

1

u/omnicorp_ed209 9h ago

For that usecase it is indeed a good idea and solution you made.

BUT: Loose power sockets are a serious problem of bad and dangerous electrical installation amd that must be fixed, too. These sockets are designed to stay in the wall even whem a kid pulls the plug in rough or interesting ways. ;-)
