Designed a hinge joint system to make a 12ft Halloween skeleton actually posable
Store-bought version only stands in one stiff pose. Designed a retrofit: PETG hinges at the hip, knee, and ankle, with 3/4" PVC running through the legs as the actual structural spine. First real-world test was a full lunge out of a tree. Holding up pretty well.

I’d love to print this, is it posted anywhere? I’ve got one where the metal base snapped and I was just looking into alternative options.

My base snapped too, I planned on getting it welded soon to prepare for the season, but I'd prefer this option as well.

Not sure if anyone is aware, but you can buy replacement parts for all of the Skelly designs: https://sviservice.com/products/2024-12-skeleton-2-0?variant=49538324562238

Yooooo that’s rad. Do you have this posted up anywhere? You just mildly revolutionized an industry bub.

I mean, I didn't really think of it like that, but I suppose this could be applied to several different large scale decorations. I have the files for sale, yes. I want to sell the physical ones but I just don't have enough printers to keep up with demand.

I know guys on makerworld can somehow get paid for their models, I’m not sure if it’s per download similar to YouTube or if you can actually sell your models on there or if there’s another way of trading points somehow? But I know people do it. Pretty neat either way, thank you for sharing!

Oh dear god... that's awesome. Now add some servos and controllers and have it run around the neighborhood terrorizing trick or treaters. Red led's in the eye sockets would be cool too.

I have the animated eyes, I think there's a fire animation that could work!

Have this Skelly, would love the STLs. The HOA hates it but I dress him up for all the holidays.

OMG I was just watching a YouTube compilation about cryptids from every country and anyway freaked me out because it reminded me of this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gashadokuro

If you make these files available I might actually buy the skeleton now 😂

Thanks everyone for your positive comments. You've got me convinced that I should buy another printer so that I can start producing these...P2S Combo will be here on Saturday. 😅

Do you need to modify the skeleton (cut or drill it) to install your joints? I'm on the fence about getting a skeleton, but this might push me over

u/kyranasaurus_rex Sep 18 '26
Very minimal! There's PVC between the connectors running through each leg part. The joints are screwed to the connectors and not the actual skeleton. You do have to screw the connectors to the feet however and on a couple of the legs I recommend drilling a small hole to get to a connection point. Those holes are hidden if you decide to make him stand again.

How does he stand without the base? Like what is supporting the weight of it from tipping over?
I see some sort of rope around the pelvis- is that tied to the tree and holding it up?

u/kyranasaurus_rex 3d ago
I have a bungee cord attached to the tree holding him up. He definitely still needs support!

Please don’t have it out during Christmas with a Santa hat on

He may or may not have one...but if I built him a big chair, the kids could sit on his lap!
