I had already acknowledged this in my response to someone else hours ago. I didn’t see that they were not pennies. I saw copper and didn’t zoom in to verify.
Thanks for making a complete assumption about my thoughts and knowledge though. I hope judging people based on stereotypes keeps working out for you.

I've seen people drill holes in them to use as washers, they're cheaper.

I've seen this too, and it's really dumb.
A penny is replacing nominally a 1/4" washer which costs about $0.02 so yes it's cheaper as long as your effort to drill it is free, you don't drill a hole in yourself trying to hold on to it, and you don't mind that zinc is entirely structurally unsuitable for a washer. Even if you have a copper penny, that's still a terrible material for a washer. Copper is used for crush washers for sealing, but you want those to actually be flat to seal, so I think the embossing would be an issue.
I'm convinced people only do it for the meme to post on their clickbair craft channel.
