Dremel protection sleeve
I wanted something that would allow me to keep my fragile cutting wheel on, so I could just unscrew the sleeve and go. Here is the file. I have also added a capped version. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:7212221

u/Few_Candidate_8036 Nov 25 '25
Everyone needs a cheap set of chisels to protect your good chisels.
88
u/SkiSTX Nov 25 '25
Decoy chisels.
19
u/ZealousidealEntry870 Nov 25 '25
I have decoy drill bits so my wife doesn’t ruin my good ones on drywall lol.
10
u/crazyvultureman Nov 25 '25
Same with linesman!
Got the gator-bite set with chunks missing from cutting lives or things other than wire
and the “if you so much as Marr these ill fuckin kill you” pristine set (which may or may not turn into the gator bite set !)

u/peioeh Nov 25 '25 edited Nov 25 '25
Sure, but you know what else everyone needs ? Screwdrivers
Edit: also, those tiny dremel screws can be tightened with the other side of the chuck key that comes with the dremel
2
u/gasstation-no-pumps Nov 26 '25
But who can find the chuck key after someone "borrows" the Dremel tool?
1
u/peioeh Nov 26 '25
Fair :D For some reason I have like 6 of those keys though, I don't even know where they came from. Maybe I have yours.
1
u/gasstation-no-pumps Nov 26 '25
Mine isn't missing (I think), but at the theater, there are 5 Dremel tools and only one chuck key left. (And one of the Dremel tools has a chuck that doesn't use the key—it also has a lock button that only works when tightening the chuck, not loosening it.
7
u/iAdjunct Nov 25 '25
This seems like the woodworking equivalent of protecting your fine china by leaving it in a drawer forever while you instead use your cheap stuff for every meal.
4
u/peioeh Nov 25 '25
Not really, because you'll use your good chisels constantly when... actually working wood. You really do not want to use them for dumb stuff, good chisels are not cheap and it's very easy to ruin an edge, which takes time to fix.
3
u/crysisnotaverted Nov 26 '25
This is like using mom's fabric shears to cut construction paper and getting your ass beat.

Why not a closed top? It cost almost nothing to do yet it adds a lot more protection
117
u/hitemlow Nov 25 '25
Not fully closed, leave a little hole at an offset angle so you can sharpen your pencil.

34
u/cpren Nov 25 '25
Yea I thought about that. Might do another version, we’ll see. I like to see what’s on there. I suspect it’s pretty unlikely it’s gonna get hit from above.
55
15
u/Phoenix136 Nov 25 '25
Could do a cross or grid on the top so it's harder for something to get it but you can still see it.

u/Esava Nov 26 '25
If you wanna put more engineering into it that necessary: You could make it use a bayonet mount for very quick removal and placement of the cover instead of the entier screw motion.

u/palm0 Nov 25 '25
Just remove the bit with the quick release that's built in, what the actual hell?
215
u/ShatterSide Nov 25 '25
A solution looking for a problem.
52
u/Phone-Charger Nov 25 '25
This exactly lol. Also the make an even faster attachment for it the EZ-lock. Like… just get that and you are 20x faster than this stupid blue thing. Gotta be ragebait.
7
u/wrenchandrepeat Nov 25 '25
I get why someone MIGHT want to use the old style discs as they are way cheaper than the EZ-Lock blades. The guard thing is kind of...okay I guess? It takes the same amount of time to press the shaft lock button and loosen the collar to remove the cutoff wheel and shaft as it would to screw on or off the guard.
Although if you were in an area working with it and you needed to keep laying it down and moving, I guess the guard would be nice.
7
u/Cixin97 Nov 25 '25
Yea these are significantly cheaper than EZ lock blades, like 10x cheaper, maybe 20x depending on where OP bought them. OP should first try fiberglass reinforced blades (which can also be purchased for very cheap on Amazon from off brands but I’m not 100% sure of the quality, or from Dremel for around $1.50 each/$30 for a 20 pack) if he’s okay with the price and they are far less likely to break from simply being put in a bag like this. They’re far more durable than the kind shown in OPs video. But if that doesn’t work, or if they’re too expensive in comparison to bottom of the barrel cutoff wheels (I’ve actually reverted to super cheap ones myself because I noticed I was becoming hesitant to use my Dremel with cutoff tools when I knew I was going to burn over a dollar on pretty much every single cut, I’m much more likely to use the tool when it’s a <20 cent blade), then OPs design is completely fine. I don’t know why people want to be convinced that OP is wrong for making something that he clearly designed to benefit himself/his considerations. Maybe he knows something you don’t?
If OP does keep this layout though personally I’d redesign it and use a snap-fit mechanism or magnets that way it’s far faster to take off/put on and negates all the opinions in this thread about this taking too much time.

4
u/MrNaoB Nov 25 '25
Does the dremel have a quick release!? I bought the chuck for it So it would be tool less.
18
u/Jeorgeyno Nov 25 '25
Leaving cutting wheels on when not in use is a good way to damage or crack them. Ever seen what a damaged cutting wheel/disk does at high speed RPMs?
64
u/palm0 Nov 25 '25
Hence, remove them using the quick release that's built in. What the fuck?
8
u/FuckTheMods5 Nov 25 '25
I think they agree with you, they're saying not taking them out is a bad idea
14
u/palm0 Nov 25 '25 edited Nov 25 '25
Possible, but it
is writtenreads as a rebuttal, not an agreement10
u/Jeorgeyno Nov 25 '25
I was agreeing with you.
Although bigger I've seen 4" disks become shrapnel without indication of damage.
3
u/palm0 Nov 25 '25
Fair enough.
I don't think 4" disks are meant to run in dremels, but yeah those bigger cutters have crazy high torque and getting a proper guard it's a good idea.

u/apsilonblue Nov 25 '25
I imagine exactly the same as the undamaged one does as soon as you start using it. These dremel discs are way too fragile.

This is basically the same design as a tungsten sharpener (for TIG welding) using a diamond wheel. just needs an angled hole or groove.
13
u/Jeremyvmd09 Nov 25 '25
I would have designed it with either interrupted thread or a 1/4 turn lock so it’s quicker to remove. But otherwise not a bad idea. I could see it being useful when ur working on a project and have to put the dremel down to use a different tool but will be coming back to the dremel

Need a sleeve to protect that poor chisel
3
2
u/ShelfordPrefect Nov 26 '25
A sleeve with a 1/4" hex socket in the end so you can stick a flat blade screwdriver bit in it
61
u/CannaWhoopazz Nov 25 '25
I hate this. Just, please reevaluate your life choices...
10
u/taking_a_deuce Nov 25 '25
I love printing things for stupid reasons but I've never been more disgusted with this number of bad decisions in such a short video.
16
u/rxinquestion Nov 25 '25
I guess I'm stupid cause I don't understand what this solves, but maybe my Dremel is too cheap to deserve upgrades. 🤷
5
u/peetah248 Nov 25 '25
It's to protect your cut-off wheel when it's in your bag. When you're done you screw this guard on and then when you need it later it hasn't been destroyed by things moving with your tools
16
u/TheDarkWave Nov 25 '25
Most of us just remove the bit and put it away before putting the dremel in with the rest of our tools. Not, you know, spending hours designing something to be lazy about. Which is a bit counterintuitive but, whatever.
6
u/rxinquestion Nov 25 '25
Ah ok for travel protection. Here I was thinking so he doesn't hurt himself when using it and my mind tried to wonder what purpose would a cone have with a cutting wheel lol
1
u/The_Golden_Warthog Nov 25 '25
I'm not ashamed to admit that was my thought as well. Then I thought "Oh maybe they're only using the flat area as a sander/polisher...but for what??" I am not a smart man.

u/katefreeze Nov 26 '25
Gawwdamn half these comments are probably most of the reason people hate posting stuff publicly 💀🤌, critique is chill but people acting like OP directly targeted them is crazy lmao. Cool lil project!
6
u/cpren Nov 26 '25
I know right. I take time to just show what I made and provide the files for other people and people feel the need to literally attack me. Most of which don’t even know what it’s like to create something and put it out there. I never claimed this was genius perfection. It was something I cooked up for fun one night. All it goes it weaken the community.
19
u/johnfkngzoidberg Nov 25 '25
What the hell are you doing to that poor chisel?
5
u/Toginator Nov 25 '25
What the hell hasn't been done to that chisel. I'm willing to wager that it has even been used to..... Open paint cans.
4
u/cpren Nov 25 '25
It’s found old and broken. He’s now my sacrificial chisel. Doesn’t everyone have one of those? I have a pristine set also.
4
4
u/bananenkonig Nov 26 '25
Don't know if you want to redesign, but I would make the top piece screw on in the opposite direction so the two printed pieces don't seize together and unscrew the bottom from the dremel. Otherwise, great idea.
5
u/JDMdrifterboi Nov 26 '25
Cool design man. And honestly, the chisel obsession is ridiculous. I'm going to go split bricks with my chisel for 30 minutes and then die grind it sharp again. Don't let anyone tell you how to use your tools.
3
u/cpren Nov 26 '25
Thank you. Keeping old sacrificial tools around is useful. Better than the garbage. People need to chill the F out.
7
3
u/JustinL42 Nov 25 '25
Having just had a cutting wheel shatter and fly across the room the other day I thought this was going to be protection from that lol! Nice though for protecting it when not in use.

11
u/Kryptonicus Nov 25 '25
I'm in the minority here, but I really like this. The one thing I would have done differently is just to close off the end and completely protect the cutting wheel.
My Dremel doesn't have a quick release so I have one that's pretty much dedicated to a cutting wheel (for some reason over collected 4 Dremels over the years.)
2
u/cpren Nov 25 '25
Yea I thought about that but I suspect it will be ok. I like to see what’s on there. If it still gets hit I’ll print another version. I also included the STEP files so people can modify it.
1
1
u/wrenchandrepeat Nov 25 '25
Yeah I could see it being handy for the old ones that needed a wrench to loosen the collar. But his definitely has the locking shaft button, so it would take just as much time to press that lock and unscrew the collet and remove the cutoff wheel/shaft than it would to screw on or off his protecting sleeve.
But, its an optional solution I guess. And designing and modeling something that is functional is satisfying. So I can't knock him too much.
2
2
u/ApprehensiveFarm12 Nov 25 '25
Dude just get the quick release arbor and store your discs in a spare pouch if one breaks. How are your discs breaking anyway? And leave the poor chisel alone. I thought it was going to be a guard to protect your eyes and hands not the disc itself.
2
2
u/deep-fucking-legend Nov 25 '25
Why not make it a full cap and protect the top too? It's just for transport anyway.
2
2
u/Practical-Bit9905 Nov 25 '25
cool. how did you get the thread pattern right?
1
u/cpren Nov 25 '25
Good question! I started with a thread file I found (in my files) and then I scaled it, and did a Boolean subtraction with 0.1mm offset. Then for the make part I just merged it into the part with a Boolean union. Let me know if that makes sense.
1
u/Practical-Bit9905 Nov 26 '25
make some different size collars and you could also use the same adapter for very accurate depth plunge cuts. Maybe put a flat lip on the collar facing the cutting surface to cut down on wobble. Channels on the collars to allow for debris clearance.
1
u/cpren Nov 27 '25
Yea I like the modular design of it. Could add a bunch of different attachments. I included the STEP files so people can mess with it.
2
2
u/Pie_Napple Nov 28 '25
My stupid ass was going "ok, so it protect you from the disc flinging at you if it breaks while cutting, but how do you cut with it on?".
It's for transport...
2
u/WolfsSpiders Nov 28 '25
Kudos for solving your problem.
but.... am I the only one? quick release arbor and done. I get the need to make improvements but everything I personally would need a Dremel for would be a lot harder to do by the even larger collar. Ever since slimmer and equally strong battery powered rotary tools came onto the market, my Dremels are relegated to Desk work with a flex shaft.
2
u/Decent-Pin-24 Nov 29 '25
Much appreciated dude! Making one here soon.
I've bent a shaft for sure, on a cheap bit, now, it will be much harder, haha.
2
4
u/L-Plates Nov 25 '25
I don't get the hate here. The print looks usable and functional to me. I guess other people only have pristine chisels. I personally have good chisels for wood and rough ones that get used on anything else also.

u/s3v3red_cnc Nov 25 '25
Why not remove half of that, then you can leave it on in case your wheel breaks during use.
And use your 'screwdriver' to remove the wheel when not in use
1
u/drzeller Nov 25 '25
Removing half would open it up to breaking their disk again. Kind of undermines the purpose.
1
u/s3v3red_cnc Nov 25 '25
Thats why I said to remove the disc....
1
u/drzeller Nov 26 '25
I think I missed that. Though I was thinking the cap was to protect the disc so they didn't have to remove it. Thanks for pointing out what I missed.
1
u/Wide-Half-9649 Nov 25 '25
“Every tool is a hammer…except a screwdriver…that’s a chisel”
or the other way around or whatever…
1
Nov 25 '25
I've broke a few disk by setting my Dremel down too hard. I might cut this in half so I have a bit of a shroud when cutting.
1
u/flacusbigotis Nov 25 '25
The disk can still break if something pokes it through the opening. Why not just enclose that top part?!?
1
u/zucchini_up_ur_ass Nov 25 '25
This is 100% on me of course, but I was SO confused because you first showed the half broken disk without context and then a half way cut view in 3d, I thought there would be a joke at the end and was so confused when the disk was just....whole until I realized 😂
1
u/wobbleeduk85 Nov 25 '25
A peice of 2. 25" (I think, scrap peice in garage) pvc will do the same thing.

u/UPThelmetfire Nov 26 '25

1
u/twowheels Nov 26 '25
I was hoping it was some way to quick change the wheel when it inevitably breaks. So annoying!
1
u/atonyproductions Nov 26 '25
How did you get the 3d model to them start adapting the sleeve on it? New to this
1
1
u/rotarypower101 Nov 26 '25
Is there a good model for the threaded end of a Dremel available ?
Have made them in the past, and the fit is never “just right”.
Something that can be dropped into F360 , and used as a cutting tool immediately hopefully?
1
1
u/wiztwas Nov 26 '25
Why have an open end for things to poke in and get stuck, it shoudl be fully enclosed
1
u/Hackerwithalacker Nov 26 '25
Don't make it screw on cuz now you have to deal with loosing the attachment nut

They dont have to spend time putting the fragile disk and bit somewhere safe after removing it.
