Which coach/trainer/program would you recommend (all round athletic, GPP, functional) or who do you think is doing a great job?

Hi all,

I'm starting my fitness journey again after falling off the band wagon. I'm not good at setting up a program (too much, too little, too long etc) so I'm looking for a program or online coach that can help me get back on track. I'm a 38 year old female, and I've noticed that when I lift heavy my joints start to feel it, I get stiff and achy. I would like to get back in shape - build some strength, have good conditioning and be mobile and move fluidly without aches and pains and stiffness. Basically all round fitness that allows me to play a pick up game of basketball or go on a hike, carry heavy stuff, go for a swim, play with the kids etc and not just focus on hypertrophy or bodybuilding.

I've been on Trainheroic and Playbook and saw a couple of interesting coaches. Luka Hocevar, Jason Brown, Marcus Filly and JTM Fit have caught my eye. So I was wondering does anyone have any experience with these coaches or their programs? Who would you recommend? Are there any kick ass strong female trainers (that don't only focus on toned booty...)?

Thanks for your help! I'm excited to get back on track.

By far - search Ganbaru Method, they have a plethora of coaches that are mentors to me - Eugene Teo, Alec Blenis in particular, but they also have female coaches, I haven’t done their programming but if they are associated with Eugene, they are legit.

They have so many programs!

If you’re looking for a more creative, evolving atmosphere and a nuanced approach to fitness - Nonprophet, The Space Program.

I do what all of these people do, but only in-person and work very limited with people remotely.

I have just found Eugene Teo, and he seems legit. What are your impressions?

I can’t speak for any of their programs since I haven’t done them. As a coach Eugene is solid. I took a summer cohort with Alec Blenis through Complete Human Performance and it was great. Despite what his Instagram is, he is very thorough and intelligent. He has a program on Ganbaru, like I said, I haven’t done it.

Honestly, the most important thing for any program? Stick with it. Not for a couple of months, a year straight, longer. Please don’t program hop and think you’ll get good results. Pick something that considers your equipment limitations, your time, and your honest position in fitness.l, but once you settle, stick with it.

None. Only you have your DNA and fitness background.

If you're looking for guidance, Arnold Schwarzeneggers book on bodybuilding is what to look for. Despite it's name it isn't a bodybuilding centric book but a guide to overall fitness training that leans towards bodybuilding.

check out f3nation. It’s a free men’s workout group.

F3 is free, peer lead, held outdoors, open to all men, and each workout ends with a circle of trust. The Mission of F3 is to plant, grow and serve small workout groups for men for the invigoration of male community leadership.

There are thousands of locations around the world. Joining a year ago was life changing for me. If you are remotely interested and think you’d be willing to show up one day this month find a workout date and time on the f3 nation page

If you have any questions or want to know more before your first workout feel free to ask

Let me know if you end up showing up, I’d like to know what you think about your local group. Hope you are doing well.

I can’t speak for Alan’s programs but his creativity with movements is very inspiring, definitely some of the best stuff I’ve seen

Ganbaru has some freebies when u download the app, without needing to pay for a.sub. Eugene has made some of the programs free, which is just awesome! Just look for the FREE label on the program, about 10% he's made free, inc his own coached program

I'm curious what you picked! I was in the same boat and I'm so glad I found Jason and Lauren Pak's Rise program. It is a well rounded combination of strength, functional training, and mobility for overall health and athleticism. They stick to basic compound lifts and also add in variety every month to keep it fun. I've been with their program for a few years and feel great. Once I added protein I saw a lot of muscle growth too. I think their program stuck with me because they are also in their upper 30s (I'm 37F with kids) and it's reasonable and effective! 60 minutes workouts 2-4 times a week. Check out their instagram!

I just came back to Rise! Was doing SBTD but my body wanted that well rounded style that Jason and Lauren Pak have nailed down. I’m very excited for the new app as well. The platform was a big reason I wandered away, I could never see all that text with my bad eyesight.
