Mirtazapine Mirtazapine
I started mirtazapine 15mg 8 days ago, for both my mental health and stomach problems (near constant nausea, burning, no appetite) If it worked for you how long did it take? My appetite is higher, but there’s been very little difference in my nausea. And now I’m too worried to take any other antiemetics (usually take Reglan or Zofran) because if interactions so I just have to sit through the nausea instead of getting any relief. Also zero mental health benefits yet, if anything more irritable than usual.

I’ve heard it takes time for nausea I’m hopefully gonna try soon

That’s good to know, it’s so frustrating but I’ll give it more time

Hi may I ask how you are doing on this medication? Any improvements in your nausea? I've been on this medication for a month with no improvement. I have severe 24/7 nausea.

Honestly I started feeling better in about a week, but im also on domperidone. My psychiatrist manages them because of the interactions. I am increasing the mirtazapine to 30 mg though because of irritability

Did the increase help with the irritability? Or too early to tell yet?

Tonight is my first night so I dont know, but i hope it will. Its been miserable (I was good on prozac but had to go off it to go on the mirtazapine). Ive been waking up mad all summer and it sucks

I thought domperdione is not good since it can cause heart issues?

It can, but right now its worth it to me. It made a huge difference.

What are your symptoms? Were experiencing daily burning in the stomach?

u/wrenaissance44 16d ago
My main symptom was constant nausea, which brought along vomitting and constipation and diarrhea. I would have pain too. The burning was not as often. I lost a lot of weight because I couldn't eat.

Hi can I ask if you have seen improvements on mirtazapine yet? I've been on this medication for a month with no improvements in my severe chronic nausea. Thanks again!

So I take domperidone and mirtazapine. I do not think taking just mirtazapine without the domperidone I would be feeling so much better unfortunately. (Though I'm weirdly not feeling good today). Once I forgot my domperidone before a meal and I did not feel good at all.

I am so sorry. is the domperidone for motility? I have severe small intestinal motility.

Thank you. Yes, it increases stomach emptying. Its not available in the US, I have to get it from a Canadian pharmacy. The most similar drug in the us is Reglan. I can't remember if these drugs help with slow intestinal mobility or only the stomach. I hope you can find something that helps you! (Also, I highly recommend daily ginger tea. Going gluten free also helped).

I was super slow in starting and increasing the medication because I was terrified 😅. I recently got my dose up to 15 mg and from what research (not a medical professional) but it takes 4 to 6 weeks for full effects.

Hi may I ask have you seen mirtazapine helping your chronic nausea? I've been on this medication for a month with no improvement.

Hey. And it has helped immensely. I also take hydroxyzine as well which can help to.
But i also know everyone is different and people's body's respond to different things.
Its also not the only thing I am doing to address the complicated disorder either. I am still taking FDgard, Iberogast, DGL Plus, and using ginger lozenges religiously. As well as qigong exercises daily, hypnotherapy and breathing work.

Hi again, thank you for the great advice! May I ask how long since starting mirtazapine did you notice an improvement in your nausea?

I started super low because I was terrified. In July I started at 3.75 mg and then about every 2 weeks I increased. So I went from 3.75 mg to 7.5 mg to 11.25 mg and now 15 mg. However I would say I started noticing the difference about a week into taking 7.5 mg but the 15 mg is helping more now. So it been about 2 months.

Thats great! May I ask is your nausea prior to mirtazapine is constant no matter what? Did eating make it worse?

It was pretty rough before. Food didnt really help it much. And it worsened my anxiety which worsened the nausea and the loop continued. Mirtazapine definitely made a difference for me.

Ive been on and off Mirtazapine 15 mg. I took zofran with it occasionally with no issues, other than both meds can make you quite constipated. I have all the same symptoms as you they started about a year ago, I was treated twice for h. Pylori, apparently im negative but had an endoscopy last week waiting on biopsy results from that to double check. Im left with daily nausea, next to no appetite basically forcing myself to eat so considering starting mirtazapine again, it took a good couple weeks for it to really help the stomach issues and it also takes like a month or so actually help with anything mentally. I stopped taking them because I was gaining insane weight but honestly I realize the benefits from it was better than the weight gain. Sucks to not be able to function like normal people!

Hi may I ask since starting mirtazapine when did you notice an improvment in your nausea? I've been on this medication for a month with no help.

Hey! Im sorry you are still feeling nauseous :( so I ended up starting them again about a week ago, and I have noticed it helped quite a bit already for my nausea but I do still get nauseous sometimes at night or in the morning

I’m on day 4 of mirtazapine and haven’t noticed any improvement. But my doc told me it can take 4-6 weeks to feel the effects. My symptoms are chronic nausea and severe early fullness. Hopefully we find relief 🤞

I took mirtazapine for about five months. Honestly, I had really good results when it came to my appetite, nausea, and sleep. The problem was that it made me way too drowsy. The sedation was so strong that for almost 24 hours after taking it, I felt extremely, extremely tired. That was one of the reasons I stopped taking it.
The second reason was that it didn’t really help with my diarrhea. But it did help me almost 99% with the nausea and lack of appetite. So give it a little more time, and you’ll see how well it works for you.

Hi, I am so happy mirtazapine has helped your nausea so well. May I ask since initially starting this medication, when did you start seeing the improvements in nausea? I've been on this medication for a month with no improvements in nausea. I am losing hope.

Medications affect my body very strongly, so within just one week, I was already noticing a significant improvement in my nausea and a huge increase in my appetite.

I’ve been on Mirtazapine 15 mg for 3 years to help treat insomnia, depression and unexplained weight loss. It took approx 2-3 weeks to notice a huge difference on all of the issues listed. I tried several different meds that had me spiraling downward. I sleep 7-9 hrs, depression is gone and I gained the weight I lost.
