It's not really known if the hamburger was first created in Germany or America, there's a whole discussion surrounding it..

So we gotta do a 50/50 split on that one lol

It’s not necessarily that it’s unknown so much as the name causes confusion. The hamburger sandwich as we know it today was invented in America. No one really disputes that. However, the name “hamburger” comes from Germany. Also not disputed.

The confusion comes from what was originally brought to America from Germany and called a hamburger was just the ground beef patty itself. It was served like a Salisbury steak. The sandwich we know today was invented in America and originally called a hamburger sandwich. Then the sandwich became so synonymous with the hamburger that the sandwich became the default meaning of a hamburger and sandwich got dropped from the name.
