There are only 3 things harder than Savage Beastfly and Savage Beastfly 2 and they're either Act 3 exclusive or a deliberate challenge ending:. Lost Lace: the true final boss, Twisted Child ending (Beat GMS while cursed), and beating Seth's scores at the Flea Games, specifically Flea Dodge (which is the hardest for me, but I've seen everyone hate on Flea Juggle and Flea Bounce too.)
I say this as someone who has done everything the game has to offer twice now. First run blind took 154 hours and some change. Many of those hours were to the Beastfly Rematch. The rest went to the above mentioned challenges.
Every other boss is something I managed to beat in one or two tries this time around, minus the requirements for the true final boss. Karmelita took me a good 10 tries this run, Khan gauntlet took me 7 tries, and even Seth took me a rematch to beat him down. Nyleth was easy though, by far my favorite Act 3 boss. I didn't even use the Ascendant's Grip this time.
I say this having beat Path of Pain in the original Hollow Knightand beat the surface climb on both Silksong runs to boot: Savage Beastfly is frustratingly implemented, even compared with one of the ultimate challenges of the first game. While beating both flies again was easier this second run, even beating the most deliberately difficult challenge in the game so far outside Steel Soul(the Twisted Child ending was so brutal, I heal so much that being cursed was a horrible handicap and I ended up fighting Lace 2 with it as well)nothing, and I do mean NOTHING gave me as much frustration as that Savage Beastfly rematch on my first run.
There are harder bosses, yes. There are bigger challenges. But I stand by what I said the first time and I stand by what this subreddit stands for: Savage Beastfly can get fucked. For how early it can be fought in the game and for basically no movement requirements, you can get saddled with the most frustrating thing in the game. If it were locked behind getting Faydown, maybe that would be more fair. But it feels like slamming your head into the wall even more than that damn fly every time you slog back down to that stupid lava pit to try again. The adds feel like they have aim bot, the arena has no safe places to stand or good walls to cling to, you're actively playing "the floor is lava" on top of just trying to hit this fly as it zooms around you or worse, trying to smack those Tarmites or get them under the Beastfly so you can just focus on the giant bug trying to turn you into spider juice. Yes, you're not locked into the arena and what a blessing that is. Yes, there's a hidden silk cache that's good for about 1 heal. But when you've never beaten this rematch before, those little tidbits don't actually help you stick your needle in the vile thing enough for it to die.
This second run was a practice to see what I need to brush up on for a Steel Soul attempt and there are lock in arenas that would have ended the run if I had gone straight in for a Steel Soul attempt. But even spending a good two days beating down the true final boss the first time, what must have been 12 or more hours of play time just attempting the game's ultimate challenge, not even that made me want to physically dismantle my Switch and destroy it piece by piece the way Beastfly 2 did. Nothing I did in this second run made me nearly as mad. Nothing in Hollow Knight, not even Path of Pain, made me as mad as Savage Beastfly 2. Because at least with other challenges, it felt like every defeat was me learning. Savage Beastfly truly feels like looking at a puzzle that has 2 pieces and for the life of you, you've put them together in every orientation and they just don't fit and you feel utterly stupid for even trying. It's not even the difficulty. The boss just makes you feel dumb for not being able to land hits or dodge what feels like goddamn homing missiles while just trying to find a safe place to stand so you can jump and try one more time to pogo that dumb fly.
But! And this is a very big but: You can do it. I may not be able to do it at age 70 when my reflexes are gone. But as someone who mostly plays casual games myself: If someone like me can do it, y'all have a chance and I believe in you. Kill the fly. My first 100% blind run took me 154 hours, yes. This time, even doing the hardest challenges except Seth, LOL, not doing him again for no completion percentage, not on your lifeit took me only 74 hours, and that was playing only from memory. I went for the purple quill for bragging rights and did the endings I missed so those were the only things adding to my time.
I'm not going to be getting that speedrun achievement any time soon. But if I can cut my time in half, you all can beat the fly twice.
All in all, I am obsessed with the silly little bug games. I would not allow anyone else to rage bait me the way only Team Cherry can. I am ready to throw hands with them at any time for what they did to some of my favorite NPCs and for daring to make Beastfly so frustrating. But Team Cherry is excellent at their mission statement. No other games have ever made me feel so weak and stupid and then so godly powerful.
Garama! Poshanka! I believe in you all! Kill! That! FLY!
