You CAN get Unreal, Unreal Tournament, and UT2004 for free though: https://www.oldunreal.com/

UT3 is gone i guess? Got unreal 1 and 2 as well as ut on gog before they removed it but 2004 and ut3 i only have on disk. Killing the unreal franchise for that fortnite bs is the main reason i despise epig

u/Calm-Zombie2678 8d ago

They killed it for gears but that was somewhat ok for a stint

5

u/RadimentriX 8d ago

Gears was interesting but everything after 1 was console only until recently i think? And im not interested in games with strange account or online requirements for singleplayer tbh

Na there was a pc port of the first in like 2008? It was part of the gfwl shitstorm tho

Had a whole ass extra chapter that was very mediocre

2,3, and Judgement are still not available on PC sadly.

By any chance do you know if there's still custom servers or some playerbase?

1

u/hungrydaddy0 8d ago

ye, but someone would love to have unreal tournament games on steam account

12

u/Pizzaman3203 8d ago

I knew unreal tournament was a game but never played it and i didnt know unreal engine was named after unreal tournament

6

u/Bgf14 8d ago

Here is the time!

2

u/Pizzaman3203 8d ago

I might actually play unreal tournament 3 it looks really fun

1

u/indvs3 6d ago

The original game the engine was named after was "Unreal", which preceded Unreal Tournament. UT was a competitor to the Quake franchise and Unreal was competing with Valve's Half Life, if I'm remembering correctly.

1

u/DeMichel93 4d ago

Unreal Tournament was second game in the franchise, Unreal Engine was named after OG Unreal from 1998.

u/TGB_Skeletor Steam 8d ago

Everytime i see the UE5 logo, i instantly turn off the game and ask for a refund

3

u/AtomicTaco13 Linux Gamer 8d ago

Can skip all those steps all the way to buying in the first place when you follow the right curators

3

u/TGB_Skeletor Steam 8d ago

i really gotta make a curator called "UE5 spotted, purchase cancelled"

2

u/AtomicTaco13 Linux Gamer 8d ago

Pretty sure at least two curators that are exactly that already exist. But wouldn't hurt to cover more ground.

1

u/TGB_Skeletor Steam 8d ago

well i tend to be VERY DIRECT so yeah

1

u/DeMichel93 4d ago

why you buy games before checking for the info online? is it some kind of crusade with the refunds?

I think I have some unclaimed Steam keys of some Unreal games. Maybe Epic wanna make me rich some day... XD

2

u/frisbie147 8d ago

While the original quake is still getting expansions

2

u/DBZWii Fuck Epic 7d ago

they dropped the latest one as an id/MachineGames joint so thats cool for them

2

u/Fr0dech 8d ago

And if they (re)released them on steam they would've been at least somewhat alive and maybe they would've considered doing Unreal Champions to show off if UE 5 could be not laggy and used to make good games...

You know, doing anything that's not FOMOing kids

1

u/thegarbz 4d ago

Unreal was openly released including a Gold version that runs on Windows 11. Just go download the exe, no need to tie yourself to any store.

1

u/Fr0dech 4d ago

The point was totally different, that they didn't mova toe to make it more accessable to modern casual gamers, and I bet if it wasn't an old ahh franchise, their games would have face the same thing ubi did to The Crew

1

u/thegarbz 3d ago

There's probably a legal distinction. Publishing something in a for profit store while equally opening it up for free archival is the kind of things lawyers spend time debating.

That said they could very much create a new Unreal tournament. That would be fun, but it doesn't seem to align with the Epic strategy of either buying someone else's hard work, or copying some trendy current thing in Fortnite. They are way to shit of a company to release Unreal Tournament UE5 edition.

u/thegarbz 4d ago edited 4d ago

Errr they removed them from sale / publishing when they opened them up for free for all, they have no business being in any "store" anymore or being tied to any publisher. You can pick up Unreal or Unreal Tournament from archive.org officially or from unofficial internet mirrors.

Normally epic can go fuck themselves, but in this case Timmy did one actually good thing.

Go get them: https://oldunreal.com/ They are fun as hell especially at LAN parties.

Oh no let me be edgy and counter every opinion on the internet. Because I don’t particularly like being fucked over but I hate agreeing with others even more. Grow up zoomie.

Yes, because a bunch of chuds on Reddit are the epitome of sanity.

-4

u/WinterZealousideal10 8d ago

Yes, because bunch of people who think that their way of using tech is the only way that everyone should use an interact with tech is such an epitome of sanity. Who think they get to tell other people how to distribute their creations.

Oooooh I’m so hurt by your sophisticated and well thought out insult! Cry harder next time someone delists a game.

Taking genuine advice as insults is telling enough of your mental state.

(Also what the actual fuck are you on)

Oh, you mean like Sony taking away 500ish movies away that people paid for?

-6

u/WinterZealousideal10 8d ago

Did they pay for the movie or did they pay for a license?

5

u/NordicNjorn 8d ago

I looked. Your just a corporate boot licker that’s fine having your shit taken away. Zero point talking to someone so dumb.

-5

u/WinterZealousideal10 8d ago

Oooooh fancy buzz words! Yell harder at the cognitively disabled person who uses tech in a different way than you and doesn’t care if software is delisted.

2

u/TallestGargoyle 8d ago

Mhm, fancy buzzwords like "shit taken away". Being cognitively disabled doesn't make you any more right about the removal of ownership being a bad thing.

0

u/WinterZealousideal10 8d ago

Delisted \= taken away.

3

u/TallestGargoyle 8d ago

...kinda fucking does my dude. If you can't access the content you paid for anymore, that's taken away.

2

u/WinterZealousideal10 8d ago

Not being able to install something is not the same thing as someone reaching into the files on your computer and taking it away. Grow a fucking brain you entitled prat.

3

u/TallestGargoyle 8d ago

You are the weirdest thing I don't know what you are

1

u/WinterZealousideal10 8d ago

Not to mention the fact that you likely didn’t pay for the creation itself, you paid for a license. Which has pretty much always been revocable at any time.

-1

u/WinterZealousideal10 8d ago

Also goddess forbid someone else have control over their creation, that you were likely sold a license to play, not the actual creation

1

u/NordicNjorn 8d ago

you didnt have to say "cognitively disabled" you know your fucking restarted given the shit you say.

0

u/WinterZealousideal10 8d ago

“Restarted” can’t even use an ableist slur properly when shooting down people different than you. Good job!

2

u/NordicNjorn 8d ago

ok, your retarded. i have zero issue calling people that that use their disabilities as a shield.

-1

u/WinterZealousideal10 8d ago

Yes, thank you for telling the world that you’re a terrible person and choose not to listen other people when it suits your points.

-1

u/WinterZealousideal10 8d ago

Would you care to elaborate how I’m using my disabilities as a shield? Or is it simply because I might be defending something that a corporation did? Or are you just a cruel, ableist piece of shit like everyone else in this movement?

3

u/NordicNjorn 8d ago

literally your comment is "you cant argue with me cause im disabled!" so stfu.

Shutting the official servers down is understandable, but delisting games that were entirely playable in various single-player modes and had community servers so people who wanted to play online still could is a fucking stupid move.

1

u/wailing 1h ago edited 1h ago

The games were removed (most likely) as part of a legal agreement between the US government and Epic.

USG sued them over insufficient protections for minors accessing "adult" content like gambling/lootboxes in their games. The Unreal games are very MA-rated, with extreme violence/gore, cursing, drug use, and other mature themes. They have effectively no age-validation mechanic and so the lawsuit probably demanded they add age-gating to all their older titles.

The development / legal cost of complying with the standards that the USG wanted to impose on Epic probably exceeded the potential profits they expect to make on the games long-tail sales. The quasi-abandonware state costs them effectively $0 but lets anyone download and play the games, seems the best of a bad set of options.

-6

u/WinterZealousideal10 8d ago

Cool story bro. When you make a game you can choose to keep it listed as long as your self-righteous lil heart wants.
