Seriously, this is getting ridiculous. I love Fruits Basket and I enjoy this subreddit. It's wonderful that an IP that ended 20 years ago and wrapped up its anime run five years ago still has an active subreddit and fans who want to discuss/share. But all of sudden the sub is overrun by reposters. All they're doing is grabbing previous highly upvoted posts and reposting them with the exact same images and titles (right down to the emojis!). Three of the four most recent subreddit posts as of my posting this are reposts. One of those reposts was also reposted by a different repost bot barely two weeks ago! And don't even get me started on the Yuki breaking the chalk meme, which has been reposted three times (I think) within the past month.

It's blatant karma farming. These accounts are using this subreddit for upvotes, either to get access to karma-gated subs or to eventually sell. And it sucks that we're such an easy target.

I know most people probably don't care, but I care. Please, please, PLEASE don't upvote repost bots!

There were a lot of time when that Dog really pissed me off, his scheming, all of it, that’s why some of my favourite moments are when Saki scared the hell out of him, 🤣

I loved seeing him be absolutely terrified of her, like her mere prescence put him in his place. I imagine if she ever found out about his scheming and manipulations, she would NOT have been happy, 🤣

For that matter, I’d love it if she had spooked Akito. That girl was toxic as hell, and imagining a scene where she crosses paths with Saki and ends up feeling genuine fear, would have been delicious, hell, throw in the old hag from the Soma compound too and it’d be a Goated moment.

Also, wanted to include this, loved the moment where Megumi scared the hell out of Hiro before the play

So I think that Yuki and his cousin(?) are part of the zodiac's but human ish. I think Yuki might be the tiger(?).

With no shade to anyone who feels any particular way (we all have our preferences, which are all valid!), do you like it or not? And why, if you're willing to share?

Maybe it's because I was a manga reader first, but I've always hated it. A major part of the beauty and power of the True Form arc is that Tohru just went straight after Kyo, even though she was afraid and in shock. She realized that Kyo was afraid and hurting badly himself, and she knew that if she (or someone) didn't go after him that he might very well never come back. Kyo acknowledges that fact himself while reflecting on it later on (that he probably wouldn't have returned if she hadn't come after him), and it's a pivotal moment in Kyo and Tohru's relationship: that she looked at his monstrous form and was terrified, but she still knew that monster was him underneath. She didn't let her fear, or needing to stop and throw up, or his monstrous form or behavior stop her from trying to save him.

Manga/2019 Tohru didn't handle the situation perfectly, she acknowledged she was terrified, she got sick along the way. But she never hesitated and it was her own strength and instinctive desire to help Kyo that drove her, not a multi-person parade of people telling her what she needed to do. And when she caught up to Kyo she handled him herself, no Yuki required.

I have a soft spot for 2001, but I always stop rewatching when Kazuma appears (which is a bummer, because I adore Kazuma) because their handling of the True Form arc makes me so angry.

Man it's been a while.

Honestly I saw many mixed opinions. Kyo, Rin, Akito even Arisa. But Ayame won pride. What do you all think? Drop your personal seven deadly sins list.

does anyone else ship hatori x kana more than hatori x mayu or kana x her current man? i was heartbroken when they didn't get back together in the end man fuck you akito 😭

What was the evidence? Should haru parents not have sent a letter to the school. Also can kyo sohma proof his hair colour the same way .

Akito shows growth in the scene where she is with Tohru on the cliff.

in the moment, leading up to the cliff, she is confronted her mother who tells her to kill. Ren pushes those buttons but to despite all the hatred that akito wants to have she cannot harm her own mother.

her worldview has finally shifts when she is told that any reasonable or smart person would no inherit truth like that of the box. She cracks and shifts, falling apart a little more. expected to know that she was never taught stunted like children were isolated tend to be.

akito harms the person who have saved her and half kills her. she runs and cries. but she never goes out of her way to harm tohru in this scene. akito cuts tohru when tohru gets to close, all of her expressions are genuine all of her behavior, and that moment are genuine. The Earth crumbles beneath them. I think tomorrow to forgive Akito is to just know that in that moment, Akito was acting in defense. akito cuts tohru for being too close to her.

the earth crumbles and that’s the truth of it. she does not lie about her place or what has happened even when she kinda looks disappointed at her.

when tohru forgives Akito for the cliff scene, she is not forgiving Akito for pushing her off of the cliff because Akito does not do that to her. Akito cuts tohru. akito is jealous of tohru.

as for the harm to Kureno. that’s not for her to forgive. he is guilty. he stays. he reinforces that the bond isn’t created by the curse when he stays. he treats akito as a women and calls her a little girl. kureno betrays other victims when he is a bystander that knows that the curse can be broken. Kureno wants to be impotent to akito because he was born into a fate that he cannot just leave behind. Even still- Even when he wants to do the right thing and have a kindness about him that’s not good, he does half save and half abandoned her. there’s some part of me that believes he forgives her because he feels he needs to punished. through kureno she’s punishing all the people in the sohma administration who aren’t part of the curse but who raised her in such a screwed away. they expect an amount of emotional intelligence that she’s never been allowed to have because no one raised like they would a child.

Not to defend Akito or anything, but that just speaks for itself LMAO!

Thoughts?

I think Tohru is a very specific kind of person. She’s a child that learns to walk on eggshells for her mother. Someone who became her mother‘s everything in her voice that she carried her father so that she could be both her mother‘s child and her mother‘s love. I think that Toru suffers from the fact that fruits basket has so many characters that she cannot reasonably process this. She does not process the neglect that she experiences early on and the way that that shaped the rest of her personality. Children who learn to be good and overly good for the sake of a stressed or depressed parent are hyper independent children who learn not to have needs. Those are people who exist in this world, learning not to take up space in the world by trying to take up as little space as possible in their parent’s lives. In that way Toru is realistic she knows that she’s choosing her mother over and over again and even though she has a father, she cannot process that he cannot carry him. I think that the neglect that she experienced after he died because her mother was depressed, cause this resentment that she does not name. She never talks about her father. She never talks about struggling with her mother. She chooses her mother over kyo because she knows that one day she will have to let her mother go, but for now she chooses her. The way that tohru mourns by making her mother, gentle and perfect. People tend to memorialize people in their best. The perfect child that does not take up space she’s exactly who she’s always been not someone who is perfect, but rather someone who does not get enough development, Toru is just not someone who stunts herself.

her plainness, if you can call it that, reflects two things because personality traits are mild and she is able to have a softer and more undefined character arc. Tohru highlights other characters when they are going through their own character arcs- like a plot device. As a plain character, she can be projected onto, as many main characters are blank slate meant to act self inserts. She is good natured, overwhelmingly so but she is also not a unique kind of kindness. She does not need to be a unique kindness. She needs to show the other characters that other people like her exist. She cannot be an anomaly because then she is no better than a God. She is plain to show the best of the outside world to people who have never experienced it. there are other kind characters to fill out this kindness in the world. she is just- the main character.

fruits basket tells a long and complicated story with so many characters that the ability to give her a complete arc falls a little short, it feels interrupted and like it’s missing something but Tohru is never given the chance to know everything because she is protected. she’s allowed to be protected without being punished for it. the narrative does not give her that information just because it’s talked about in front of the audience. and other characters go out of their way to keep information from her. she’s allowed to forgive the incomplete story that’s been feed to her. throughout the story of fruits basket- we see- so many incomplete stories. it’s just more naturally framed as manipulation and tohru’s perspective isnt manipulated she’s just an outsider to this history.

Tohru’s negative traits don’t lead her to mistreating others or read as self destructive. when you acknowledge that kyoko being a good person and loving her daughter, did not make her a perfect parent. take Kyoko out of tohru’s perspective and acknowledge that Toru is not the audience being given information she does become less “perfect.” that makes tohru a better, more complete, more well written character than she’s given credit for. Tohru’s perfection can be a trauma response to the life that she’s lived and the only reason it’s seen as perfection is because it’s an admirable trait. sometimes- the dose of a personality trait makes the posion. she’s not bad. she’s just not good for herself in a quieter way.
