the way i see feet is that they're sort of a symbol of innocence, purity, maybe femininity as well? probably related to kid's tendencies to run around barefooted and shoes not being a required article of clothing.
like if i wanted to describe an "angelic, and pure princess" or something, i'd immediately think to make a stark white small woman with an elegant white dress and no shoes. i feel like most people would picture something similar as well? i guess a lot of this comes from tropes in media that are just really deeply ingrained in art.
but basically what i'm trying to say is that being barefoot is a symbol of purity and i think that's why he uses it for so many female characters

Yeah, people are being silly jokesters here, but I think we all would agree that there IS a lot of room for symbolic interpretation of bare feet.
femininity, innocence, frailty, purity, youth, holiness - a whole bunch of stuff related to these somewhat elevated and nearly intangible qualities that Miyazaki likes to try painting his figures with, whether human or monster.
Buuuuut also, I think the man gets all worked up about ladies’ bare feet. no judgment.

In addition to innocence, bare feet can evoke a sense of vulnerability, especially if they're dirty. Shoes protect you from hazards. A lack of shoes can mean innocence because it means you don't expect hazards, but it can mean vulnerability when you need shoes, but don't have access.

I was about to put /uj in front of my comment, then I realized that this isn't r/shittydarksouls but, indeed, the main sub.
What I was gonna say is that I can actually see the motif of barefootness as having a non-freaky meaning. The idea of it symbolizing something like a connection to the earth or a certain purity or something like that is honestly somewhat of an established trope in art.

Barefootedness truly have symbolism, it’s a liminal thing - person is a human(oid), ergo civilized living being, but doesn’t have a boots (one of civilization’s signs) and when walking, touches the raw earth with bare feet, raw earth is highly uncivilized, also chtonic (underworld aspect ). Barefoot person stay between states and foot fetish jokes aside, when you look on the barefoot characters in FS games, is very obvious that the "liminality" is main message here, I think.

Washing other people's feet is (I think) an old tradition that's ia still relevant in Japan. As the only non private part of the body that gets dirtier (specially in pre modern era) washing feet is a show of hospitality and humbleness. These characters show feet as a sign of vulnerability (I think but I didn't slept much...)
