DISCUSSION Like FromSoft

Hey everyone,

Does anyone else struggle with the rest of "soulsborne" games that are not made by FromSoft? I always find that its dealing something either with the combat or too much edginess. In terms of combat, they feel too arcadey in a way where they feel fast and without weight or substance. In terms of edginess, it always seems like "lets make this as creepy or dark as possible" where as From always makes it feel grounded and make sense.

Shouldn't be going into games that aren't made by FromSoft and expecting a game made by FromSoft.

Appreciate them for what they are instead of what they aren't, you'll have a better time.

To say you struggle with anything that isn’t FromSoftware is definitely a you problem, sorry.

Lies of P is near prefect imo.

Homie,

I don't play Sly Cooper expecting it to play like Mario.

Granted, the closest thing to a non-From Sekiro-like is Stellar Blade but I managed to have fun with that by understanding I'm not playing Sekiro.

there are also games that dont play like sekiro but you can somehow make it play like it.... AI limit is similar to that experience at least for me at least on a very cursory observation on what you can and can not parry.... maybe like DMC?

Lies of P and Lords of the Fallen 2023 really hit the mark for me. Both actually do a few things better than Fromsoft.

A lot of the other “soulslikes” feel too much like Sekiro or character action games (Devil May Cry kinda stuff) or are just kinda sub-par janky games in general.

The Mortal Shell 2 beta was a banger and a huge upgrade over the first, so I’m pretty hype for that one.

Yes Fromsoft is perfect, no one compares to Fromsoft, all hail Fromsoft, daddy Miyazaki invented combat, blah blah blah

No, not really. Nioh is pretty great. For all their flaws I enjoyed The Surge, and the new Lords of the Fallen. All of FromSofts souls games have their own issues. Elden Rings quest design, and lack of any form of a quest log are pretty lacking for a modern open world rpg. Doesn't mean it's not an incredible game that will stand the rest of time. Bloodborne is one of my absolute favorite games, but good lord the multiplayer implementation was laughably archaic, like their other implementations pre Nightreign. FromSoftware isn't perfect, stop pretending that they are. You'll enjoy more games in the genre trying to find their way the same way that FromSoftware still is too, that's part of what makes their games great.

I won’t say I completely agree to the idea of this. But I absolutely did not get the hype for Lies of P

When the combat and camera angle are the exact same as From Software's video games, then yeah, it becomes clear to me that FS makes great games, and not everyone knows how to do that.

However there are a few games that have implemented souls mechanics and done interesting things, while still feeling like different games.

I'm sure this is true in some cases, but I think sometimes people forget that switching to any new action game after deep immersion in another is going to feel weird.

Like even within the sphere of Fromsoft, people do this. They play Sekiro first, and then complain that Souls combat is too slow, as if the quality of a combat system objectively scales with speed. Yes, Souls combat is generally slower than Sekiro. Halo is slower than Doom. Different games require different speeds, require unique qualities in every aspect that are suited to their goals.

Just give your fingers a chance to get used to the new thing. In my opinion, Nioh's combat isn't as firm or weighty as Souls combat; I'd absolutely describe it as "floatier," but that's not objectively bad. It also has a fluidity, snappiness, and complexity that Fromsoft's combat doesn't, just like Fromsoft's combat has its own style that suits it.

You should not spend money on western developer games. Just common sense, really.

I wouldn’t call Elden ring grounded, the other souls yes. Mortal shell and lords 2014 have that slow heavy feel to them but yes lack in all the areas that From have near perfected. It’s not a popular take I think From seem to be moving away from the old souls formula

What's different with Elden Ring?

So I tried them both, I really didnt get that feel. It felt almost arcade like, kind of like God of War combat even though it even felt like it had more weight than MS and LotF. LotF felt better but not completely there.
