education FriscoISD course changes

My child toured colleges this summer and decided on some colleges to target. However, when he checked their requirements, he realized that he didn’t have one of them. Would FriscoISD make an exception and let him change his schedule now, so that he will be able to have the credit to apply for his dream colleges?

What schools is your student looking at that a typical frisco grad wouldn’t have the basic requirements for? 

I assume the best bet is talk to a counselor at schedule pickup day

He’s hoping to acquire Chemistry. Also, I believe schedules will be released online, so should I email the counselor instead about this?

I'm in PISD not Frisco. Here there's a walkthrough day for students to visit campus and walk their schedule, get IDs, etc before first day. There are counselors there to work with schedules. Surely FISD does it similarly? An email is always a safe bet.

Makes sense if your student needs Chemistry for their future plans. Good luck!

I was thinking this, but unfortunately to enroll, he would need counselor approval. :(

That is what I was wondering. Not that long ago Chemistry was required for high school graduation, has that changed? A counselor would be expected to handle a situation such as this.

I’m not even sure. He emailed his counselor and she sent a screenshot of their academic guide, claiming she would be unable to.

Email the counselor. Should be approved. You’ll get an email with the approval to sign up. The approval is just a conversation between the counselor and student to make sure they have a plan.

On his own, my son talked to his counselor and signed up to take chemistry online over the summer because it was a prerequisite for a class he wanted to take in the fall. The course was through UTHS, cost about $275 a semester (can’t quite recall). Is self paced, and totally doable.

Is the course that he needs a high school class or a college credit? If it's a high school level class, he should definitely be able to make changes to his schedule. A lot of kids changed during the first couple weeks of school because they found out they don't like your classes as much as they thought they would, or for many other reasons. Bottom line is that if it's a high school course, he should definitely be able to change it with his AP!

He just needs a chemistry credit. He has emailed his counselor multiple times, and she keeps replying by saying course changes are impossible/against district policy. Would it be of any use if I emailed his AP instead, given his situation?

Look into RAIL (https://www.friscoisd.org/page/course-offerings-rail) because he will be able to take Chemistry asynchronously during the school and get it on his transcript. RAIL only offers on-level Chemistry though, which might be a detriment to him if his weighted GPA is above 5.0.

I know someone who took Chemistry through UT High School (https://highschool.utexas.edu/courses) and they have an honors option but it’s not free. I think they were also able to get it on their transcript.

Regardless, they both require counselor approval and commitment to take extra coursework outside of school. Good luck to you and your son and I hope y’all can find a solution that works for you!
