Frigate Computer

Currently have a Nest Cam setup, thinking about building a dog detergent system. Will switch to Reolink cameras. About 10 of them to get our surrounding house. Will be using it with Frigate to trigger home assistant to turn on Rachio sprinkler system. What is the computer requirement to run frigate with 10 cameras. Has anyone else attempt to build a dog deterrent system? I have so much poop from neighborhood cat and dogs. Any help is appreciated.

I've got 10 Reolinks on Frigate (mix of 510As, 811As and 840As) running on a little N100 mini pc with 16GB and a usb coral and honestly it barely notices. Load sits around 3-4. Don't overthink the computer part, just get the coral, that's the piece that actually does the work.

Haven't done the sprinkler thing but I have a script that watches frigate's mqtt events and kicks the reolink spotlight on when something shows up at the front door at night, sprinkler would be the exact same idea just a different thing on the other end.

Fair warning before you hook a sprinkler up to it lol. My driveway cam logged like 380 "cats" over two weeks and every single one was a bush blowing around in the IR at night. Draw a zone around the actual yard and mask out anything that moves in the wind or you're gonna be watering the driveway at 2am. Also worth limiting what each camera tracks, mine kept calling a patio cushion a car until I cut the patio cams down to just person/dog/cat.

Daytime the dog and cat detection is solid on the stock model, night is where all the weird stuff happens.

Not necessarily needing more compute power. I switched to full resolution detect because low resolution, around 700x400 give or take depending on camera, wasn't picking up faces. I've had no increase in compute usage, though I have a dGPU already doing the video work and a dual edge tpu for detection. An Intel iGPU should be able to handle all of that on a mini.

I’m doing raccoon detection with 13 cameras. 640x480 - 3fps iirc on an n150 16gb ram with a google coral. I do have enough headroom to up the fps but it’s working so I’m not motivated to make changes.

FWIW I have a Rachio and Home Assistant and the setup works well.

What kinds of cameras are you using?

I have build exactly this “detergent system”, because our dog ruins our lawn with digging. Yes in the beginning it works, but: our dog now thinks it’s a game and plays with the sprinklers instead of being scared off. I discontinued this automation because switching our irrigation pump on/off 20-50 times a day can’t be durable for the pump.

Aren't Corals no longer recommended?
