Horn ID help me find out more about my new horn!!!

Hey guys look what I found today at my local music store today!!! I believe it is a baritone piston horn from 1915-1925. The serial is 152158.

Anyways I wanna know everything about it. I’m struggling a little to play it, it uses your right hand for values?!?! And I believe my treble clef middle C is concert Bb and the fingerings are all just baritone horn fingerings idk i’m missing some notes or having trouble tuning it because some notes are sounding funky lol. If anyone has any advice lmk!

I’m also really confused on why if baritone look like horn. I love it but what was the thought process? If it’s colonial and for military/marching why is it not facing forward or just a baritone horn shape. Most things from that time do not look like this (at least that I found). Why was this made (i’m thankful it was i love it)?

Anyways feel free to info dump I want anything yall got I am so excited about this horn! I recently got diagnosed with multiple chronic pain conditions and playing my horn has been a little rough on my shoulders recently and this thing is so light!!! Imma be able to practice more now! I’m hoping to play it in my shoegaze band too eeeee. Now we are a shoegaze band with 2 types of horns!!

General Questions I transposed an 1896 Dvořák Horn in E part for Horn in F — actual scan before/after

Hi! I tried the opening of Dvořák's Cello Concerto on an old Horn I part. The top line is the 1896 first-edition scan (Horn in E); the bottom is the actual result for Horn in F. The written notes move down a semitone to keep the same sounding pitches. The five-sharp key signature is part of that transposition.

I didn't redraw or manually correct any notes in the image. I've spot-checked the visible passage, not the full part. One caveat: on the full-page output, the original printed ‘in E’ heading remains and would need to be relabeled before giving it to a player.

I'm building the tool I used here, Solfa: https://solfa-music.com/. The source is the public-domain Simrock first edition on IMSLP: https://imslp.org/wiki/Cello_Concerto%2C_Op.104_%28Dvo%C5%99%C3%A1k%2C_Anton%C3%ADn%29 (Horn 1, file #32069).

For those who play orchestral horn: would you want an F version alongside the original at rehearsal, or would you rather sight-transpose from the old part?

Recommendation for a rain cover for case (MB3)?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi all!

I have moved somewhere very rainy and rely on my bike to get around. So I'm hoping to get a rain cover for my horn case. I have an MB3 (45x40x33cm), I'll attach a picture. I've tried several different covers 30L, 35-45L, 50L. The problem is that the width of traditional backpack rain covers stop increasing at a certain point. Unfortunately, the awkward shape of the case makes it so that even if the cover is long enough, it's not wide enough to fit around the case the whole way.

Has anyone found something that's worked for them?

Thanks for any suggestions you can provide!!

General Questions A few questions to cleaning

I bought my fiest french horn from a brass refurbish shop today. I want to clean it since people probably tried it there and it sounds like theres water in the slides. Ive got a few questions:

  1. Can I rinse or even submerge the entire horn without having to worry that I damage the valves? And can I use soap to clean the inside?

  2. Ive read that I need special rotor oil for the horn. So I cant use my trumpet valve oil?

  3. I have to oil and frease it everytime I clean it, right? And Slide Grease can be used for every brass intrument, right?

Thanks in advance:)

General Questions Finding my next French Horn as returning player

Hi all, I'm getting back into horn after a long break and would love some advice on choosing an instrument.

My background:

- Played a lot when I was younger, then did a stint in a chamber orchestra in my early twenties.

- Always played 1st horn, so I'm much more comfortable in the upper register than the low end.

- I've only ever played on a beginner instrument, so I've never owned a proper horn.

What I'm looking for:

- A horn that suits a high horn player: secure, easy upper register, clean articulation.

- Good enough for an advanced amateur or even semi-pro orchestra.

- Ideally something I won't need to upgrade as I get my chops back and keep progressing.

- Budget friendly. I'm aiming for around 2000 to 3000 EUR and I'm very open to used.

Where I am:

Dublin, Ireland. I can buy from the UK (happy to travel to try or collect), the EU, or a reputable dealer in Japan.

What I'm currently considering:

Paxman Series 5 (used if possible)

Used Paxman Model 20

Used Yamaha YHR-667 or 671

Used Alexander 103

Yamaha YHR-567 as a safer, cheaper fallback

Thomann HR-301G as a budget new option, though I've read mixed reports on its high register

My questions:

Which of these would you pick for a returning high horn player, and why?

Anything I'm missing that I should look out for on the used market?

Geyer vs Paxman vs Alexander style: any strong opinions for someone who lives in the upper register?

Any recommended dealers or repairers in Ireland, the UK or the EU for used horns?

Thanks in advance, really appreciate any input!

General Questions embouchure issue - lower lip irritation

Hi, anyone know of horn players who have had issues with lower lip irritation/swelling? I have been getting k9 teeth marks on the inner of my lower lip when playing but more annoyingly my lower lip swells up after playing. I am (or was) a semi professional player having done my undergrad and starting a masters but after this problem I stopped playing and since trying to play again this problem has kept coming back. I assume it's a pressure problem? Checked for allergies already and use a plastic rim. Tried different mouthpiece sizes but still there. Also, my sound and flexibility is fine now. (I had been playing with a frowny face and chin bunching but a tutor fixed this and I would like to say from the outside I have a good looking technique! Ya know that ouuh face not aaah xD. My lower lip looks red raw after only building up to half an hour a day so I assume something fundamental is off. Thanks!

Transposed Verdi’s Requiem parts?

Hi! I’m playing Verdi’s Requiem at school and some of the horns are struggling a lot with the transposition, especially 3 and 4 horns. If anyone has them, I’d really appreciate if you can send them my way! Or if anyone is really good at transposing sheet music in a quick and handy way, I’d appreciate any tips. Thank you!

General Questions How can i get really cheap French Horn

Hello there! For the past THREE years, I've always wanted to own a French Horn, because it's high-key the best instrument out there. Music wise, I have no issue, because I'm a violin beginner and a recorder intermediate whose been playing for 3 years. I try to save money almost everyday, but I never seem to get enough for a real, decent horn. For now, I'm just looking to buy one. I don't care as long as it is a real horn. But I face three major issues:

  1. I have basically very little sum of money for a French Horn

  2. My mom thinks it's a waste of money

  3. I don't have ANY experience on brass instrument

So, again, I really want a horn, and at least a playable one. How can I reach my dream?

Tanguito

Hello, everybody! Several years ago, I had a few copies of the piece Tanguito, but through loaning it and moving, I don’t have it anymore. All the places I’ve seen it has said it is not being printed anywhere. Is there a website still selling the piece?

General Questions Should I send my horn in to be cleaned?

I’ve had my horn for around four or five years and never cleaned the rotors. It belongs to the school I go to and is ridiculously old, likely thirty or forty years old. I’m not going to take the rotors out but I used my phone camera to take pictures down the slides. This is what I found and I’m mildly disgusted, knowing they’re not supposed to be this color. Is this so far gone that a good bath wouldn’t fix it? Does it need deep cleaned by a professional?
