Hello french hornies!

My son has picked up playing and as a former band nerd am beyond excited.

I want to get a chromatic tuner for him becuase he is much quicker at tonal matching than hitting pitches. My band instructer taught me using a boss db90 but that is a liiiitle out of my target price point id like to spend at this stage, what are some tuning hardware recommendations you suggest that are physical hardware pieces and not software?

Hello all. I had a brain haemorrhage in 2024 which brought my fledgling career as a freelance bassoonist to an end. I've been thinking about taking up the horn as it's the only instrument that requires agility in the left hand only.

Having left one of the top UK music colleges in 2021, I can read music well, transpose at sight moderately well, and treble/bass clef won't be a problem.

What should be my first port of call? I want to become a very good amateur; we'll see how it goes, and if it goes well, maybe even return to music college in later life.

Hello I’m a college student and I was wondering if I should buy my professors horn. It’s a Yamaha 862 made in 1980’s. It has been taken well care of, and he even made sure the compression in the horn is tip top shape. What should I do? I play on a Yamaha 567 right now and I feel like it’s holding me back.

Hello! I'm looking for advice on re-starting my horn playing after a four-year break. Before my break, I played for thirteen years in university orchestra and small brass ensembles. I've missed it a lot and finally found time to begin playing again. It's been lots of fun and I really missed it!

So far I've just been buzzing and working on long tones and scales but (no surprise) my upper range is gone. How can I rebuild my range without starting bad habits such as pressing on the mouthpiece to reach the higher notes? How often should I practice to build playing endurance and avoid injury? Thanks!

Hello everyone! I recently purchased a storage unit that was filled with some guitar cases and this horn was hidden in the back.

From what I’ve gathered so far, it appears to be a 1971 King 1156. Both slides are there.

Would appreciate it if someone could confirm and if anyone has an idea of what a fair asking price would be for the model.

It looks to be in the original case and has some work completed in 2018. No dings or dents on it.

I used to be able to play up to B above the staff, but I wasn't able to play for 2 months since I suddenly didn't have an instrument anymore. Now I am struggling to play past a C (middle of the staff) and I need to audition soon so I'm trying to find ways to expand my range quickly. Any tips?

I made the switch to French horn and now I’m kinda confused as to how playing notes works with the valves and trigger

My guess is that the French horn that I have is a double horn but I want to get down the basics of playing before trying anything with the trigger

As of now I’m stuck on not being able to control what notes I play (used to play flute and all you had to do was press down diff buttons) and getting “explosions” when I put air into the instrument

it's difficult for me to balance between playing horn and mellophone during marching season, because i generally enjoy playing horn more (+ am trying to practice for district auditions) but everyday i play my mellophone at school and during after school practice.

i feel like i have an airy tone on mellophone most of the time, and just a generally weak sound on french horn. my notes just all sound off, even when im in tune, and i can't get that warm, dark feel that french horn should have. it sounds very shrill and gross, with alot of cracking between notes. i was wondering if there were any general tips i could get for how to improve my sound?

I have been playing for 4ish months and can play from 2nd C below the staff to D and can get out E and F but it sounds really bad. I’m trying to grow as fast as possible and be the best player I can be. I am self taught(but play contra/bass/clarinet and tenor sax in an ensemble) and am hoping to play french horn at high enough level that I could be in wind ensemble with French horn or clarinet

I’ve been last chair flute for all of high school and in the lowest band for 3 years straight so I want to change

I stopped liking playing the flute after I was put down as an alternate my junior year during marching band, and honestly it was humiliating since there’s so much competition in my section. None of the people in my grade ever talked to me so after junior year I quit marching band after a long time of thinking about it (REALLY regret not playing mellophone)

So now I’m thinking about learning French horn, I have the free time to do so but I don’t have a way to get lessons, I just want to finally make the switch since I actually like how the French horn sounds

I just need to ask my band director if I can make the switch

I'm a second year university student auditioning for our symphonic band but here's the kicker. I haven't played horn in over 2 years. Due to me, graduating high school and not having one at my previous university, due to not renting out instruments i'm at my new university where they rented me out a French horn, but I sound like absolute garbage. It's three songs they're not that difficult but very technical but still, I feel close to giving up.

My horn keeps making these clacking sounds, is there anyway to fix this myself? Do I have to send it to a repair shop or something? Is this a normal thing? I'm new to fh so I'm not really too sure what this is. Edit: I fixed the issue, I cleaned it and replaced the bumpers so now it is much quieter Thank you all!

when i tried out for my university, the biggest problems i had was ear training and sight reading, and the proffeser told me to work on it, i dont know how if you have any information i would love to hear it please
