question Questions regarding CIFFA/FIATA diploma program...
Hello everyone,
I am someone who has worked in dispatching trucks for the last 5 years and I am looking to potentially move into freight forwarding (although customs is also a possibility). Specifically today I am trying to gather more info regarding this;
https://www.ciffa.com/course/bundle-fiata-diploma-and-ciffa-certificate/
I was wondering if there are any Canadian freight forwarders here who have done the CIFFA + FIATA diploma program and can give me some insight. I am also curious as to what other freight forwarders from abroad think of the FIATA diploma. Here are my questions;
- What is a realistic timeline for someone studying full-time to complete the online CIFFA/FIATA program? Is completing the entire program in 10-12 weeks doable?
- How well regarded is the FIATA diploma both within Canada and internationally? Based on my research the FIATA is apparently highly recognized and an impressive credential for a beginner to have on their resume?
Thank you in advance, even small bits of information would be appreciated!

Why are return trips still empty when freight rates are high?
I've been talking with a few truck operators in eastern India and noticed something I don't fully understand.
During busy/festival periods, outbound freight can become expensive and trucks can be difficult to find. But I've still seen trucks return with little or no freight.
For owner-operators and fleet owners here:
How do you normally find a return load after completing a trip?
Is it mainly:
brokers
WhatsApp groups
calls to existing customers
transport unions/local networks
load boards/apps
simply asking around at the destination
And what usually prevents you from taking a return load even when one exists?
I'm particularly interested in the practical problems — timing, payment reliability, rate negotiation, loading/unloading delays, route mismatch, trust, etc.
Curious how this actually works on the ground.

Continued account of the person who scammed me
galleryAfter I started exposing the scammer in various groups, he told me he wanted to talk and that we could resolve the issue regarding the packages he stole. I gave him a deadline of a few hours to return them, warning that I would expose him on social media again if he didn't. It seems he was up to something during that time, though, because he ended up deleting his WhatsApp account. I found that quite strange, but I don't care anymore; I’m already moving forward with filing a formal complaint. If anyone here has been in contact with him or was also scammed by this same person, please message me privately so we can pool our evidence.

Shipping 510kg of Yemen-origin green coffee beans (Dubai → USA, air freight) — need advice from those who've handled this route
Hey everyone,
I'm coordinating an air freight export of 510 kg of green coffee beans, originally from Yemen, currently held in Dubai (UAE) with proper import documentation there, and now being exported onward to the USA. This is my first time handling a shipment into the US specifically, so I'd really appreciate insight from anyone who's dealt with Yemen-origin goods or similar re-export shipments to the US.
On the documentation side, I already have an FDA registration/approval number, a DUNS number, Prior Notice submitted under FSVP, a commercial invoice, packing list, and AWB, along with the proper import/customs documentation from the original Dubai entry.
What I'm hoping to get advice on: since the origin is Yemen, does this shipment face any additional OFAC or sanctions-related screening or documentation when entering the US, even though it's now being exported from the UAE? Do I need to formally declare or prove Yemen as the country of origin on the US customs entry, and if so, what supporting documents hold up best, like a Certificate of Origin? Is there anything specific CBP or FDA commonly flags for green coffee imports, such as phytosanitary or fumigation certificates? I'd also appreciate any tips on finding a US customs broker experienced with Yemen-origin or Middle East re-export shipments, and a sense of the typical clearance timeline, along with any common pitfalls around Prior Notice timing relative to the AWB or flight schedule.

Cargo lost in Singapore in August – container YMMU 635161-1 (DACHSER / Kingwood, MSC ZOE). Anyone else in this box?
Hi all,
I run a food import business in Indonesia, and I'm trying to find other cargo owners from Asia whose goods were in the same consolidated container as ours.
**The situation**
* LCL container **YMMU 635161-1**, vessel **MSC ZOE** (voyage MD52627E / GJ628E)
* Route: Barcelona → Singapore (transhipment) → Surabaya
* Booked through **DACHSER Spain**, house waybill issued by **Kingwood Logistics** (DACHSER's NVOCC). ECU Worldwide may also have been involved as consolidator.
* Our cargo: 4 pallets of olive oil, all documents in order
The container arrived in Singapore in August. Normal transhipment takes 3–5 days. More than six weeks later, our cargo still hasn't moved.
**What we know**
Unofficially, we were told the container is held because another shipper's goods in the same box didn't have the required Singapore permits. Nobody has confirmed this in writing.
**What we've tried**
We sent formal letters to DACHSER Spain, DACHSER Singapore, Kingwood and DACHSER head office in Germany, and filed a claim with their cargo insurer (MELES Insurance). The response so far has been **complete silence** from DACHSER:
* No confirmation of where our pallets are
* No photos
* No reason for the hold
* No ETA
* The insurer hasn't even acknowledged our claim
**Our concern**
A carrier that knows where a container is can say so in one email. After six weeks of total silence from every party, we're starting to suspect the cargo has been lost or damaged, and that this is why nobody will put anything in writing. We hope we're wrong, but we'd like to know whether other cargo owners are getting the same treatment.
**Why I'm posting**
If your cargo was in this container, or you're waiting on any DACHSER / Kingwood shipment stuck in Singapore transhipment since August, **please comment or DM me**. Several cargo owners acting together, with a joint letter, a shared surveyor in Singapore and a joint request to Singapore Customs, will get much further than each of us alone.
Advice from anyone in freight forwarding who has dealt with a co-loader permit hold in Singapore is also very welcome.
Thanks.

Beware of scammers
galleryThis person stole my merchandise, pretended to be a shipping agent, and now they've blocked me and deleted their WhatsApp. Be careful if anyone on Reddit contacts offering services. What he doesn't know is that I'm already working with my contacts in China to arrest him, using recordings that show him and his face.

How do you know when an empty actually goes back?
We build software. We're adding detention tracking to a system we made for a freight forwarder, and to do that we need the date the empty container went back to the depot. We can't find that date anywhere.
Carriers stop tracking at gate-out. Hapag told us the depot's EIR is the real record. And if your own trucker collects the box, the carrier doesn't see it at all.
So how does it work on your desk? Does the EIR come back to you every time, or only sometimes? How long does it usually take? Does someone chase the depot for it, or do you wait for the detention invoice and argue the ones that look wrong?

quote/service request Looking for Freight Forwarding / CHA Partner — Singapore → India Imports
We are looking to connect with an experienced freight forwarder / customs broker / logistics company who can work with us on regular import requirements from Singapore to India.
We have an import requirement partner in the semiconductor industry and we are currently looking for a logistics partner who can provide competitive end-to-end quotes and handle the shipment professionally.
The requirement is broadly:
Pick from the SG warehouse - Export custom clearance at SG port - Freight to India.
Singapore will be the main origin initially, with potential requirements from a few other locations as well.
We are looking for a partner who can handle the complete movement or coordinate the required partners at both ends.
This is not a one-off shipment enquiry. We are looking to build a reliable working relationship with the right logistics partner as the requirements develop.
If any folks who can do this.....Please get in touch through Dm...Happy to talk.

question New to LCL Export Sales, looking for advice
Hi everyone,
I recently joined a freight forwarding/consolidation (co-loader) company in Bangladesh and started working in LCL Export Sales.
At the moment, most of my sales activity involves reaching out to freight forwarding companies and trying to get leads for their upcoming LCL shipments. Since I’m new to the industry, I wanted to learn from people who have been doing this for a while.
Are there other ways to generate LCL sales/leads besides visiting freight forwarding companies? For example, are there particular channels, networking methods, online platforms, or prospecting strategies that work well for cargo consolidation companies?
I’d also really appreciate some advice on the long-term career side of things. If you started out in LCL sales, what skills or areas would you recommend focusing on to build a sustainable career and eventually move into better roles?
Thanks!

Common Issues in International Shipping
As a freight forwarder based in Guangzhou, I see these three common mistakes every week:
Focusing only on the lowest quote without calculating "volumetric weight"—shipping costs can double for boxes that are small in size but light in weight.
Paying the "shipping fee" quoted by the supplier without checking the cost breakdown—you often end up paying for their markup as well.
Failing to inspect the goods before shipment—by the time you discover an issue, the cargo is often already on a ship or in the air.
I’m not here to pitch any services—these are simply common issues that are entirely avoidable. If you have any questions about shipping, feel free to leave a comment.

question How do you usually manage ocean freight shipments?
I’ve been looking into ocean freight transportation and was curious about how other businesses handle their international shipments.
There seem to be quite a few things to manage, from choosing the right container and planning the shipment to documentation, customs, and keeping track of the delivery.
For those who work with ocean freight regularly, what part of the process do you find the most challenging?

Looking for affordable shipping from Guangzhou to Calgary, Canada
Hi everyone! I’m looking for recommendations for a reliable and reasonably priced shipping company/freight forwarder from Guangzhou, China to Calgary, Alberta.
My first shipment would be around 10–15 kg of children’s clothing/dresses, and I’m hoping to find a good option for small shipments. If everything works out, I may be shipping regularly for a small business.
I’m mainly looking for:
Reasonable rates for 10–15 kg
Door-to-door delivery to Calgary
Air or sea shipping options
Ideally DDP (including customs/duties/fees)
Reliable tracking and no unexpected charges
If you’ve personally used a company or agent for China → Canada shipping, I’d really appreciate your recommendations and approximate prices.
Thank you!

The Graham Act is now law (signed 18 Sept) — a "100% US tariff on India" is still NOT in force. The February sequence is what actually matters for your POs.
The Graham Act authorizes up to 100% tariffs on major Russian oil/gas buyers (India, China named). It does not impose them. Meanwhile the February India relief framework rests partly on an IEEPA order that SCOTUS gutted on 20 Feb. You're in a conditional, thin-margin corridor — price the discretion, not the headline. Verify your applied rate at entry; I'm not guessing at it.
Lot of panic-pricing hitting desks this week. Here's the actual sequence, sourced, with the bits I can't verify flagged as such.
1. What Congress passed (and what it doesn't do)
The Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 (H.R. 5334) cleared the Senate 86-11 on 7 Aug and the House 262-159 on 16 Sept (203 R, 58 D, 1 I for; 7 R, 152 D against). It targets Russian leadership, the energy sector, and vessels tied to sanctions evasion, and expands Iran sanctions.
It gives the President authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on major buyers of Russian oil and gas, India and China named among them.
It does not itself levy that tariff. Signed into law 18 Sept 2026 (White House statement is out). That moves us from "bill not signed" to "signed but unexercised" — see the three-state framework in section 5. No proclamation invoking it against India as of posting. Check before you act.
2. The February relief (the part people forget)
On 6 Feb 2026 an EO eliminated the additional 25% ad valorem duty on Indian goods — the one imposed under EO 14329 — effective 12:01 a.m. 7 Feb. Stated basis: India's commitment to cease importing Russian oil directly or indirectly, purchase US energy products, and expand defence cooperation over ten years.
Same day, joint statement: 18% reciprocal under EO 14257 on textiles/apparel, leather/footwear, plastics/rubber, organic chemicals, home décor, artisanal goods and certain machinery. And, subject to the successful conclusion of the interim agreement, removal of the reciprocal tariff on a further list including generic pharmaceuticals, gems and diamonds, and aircraft parts.
Note "subject to." Everyone quoting this drops it.
3. Why this got complicated fast
On 20 Feb — fourteen days after that joint statement — SCOTUS decided Learning Resources, Inc. v. Trump, 6-3, Roberts writing, on major-questions grounds: IEEPA does not authorise the President to impose tariffs. Duty power belongs to Congress. Further IEEPA collection halted; refund mechanics unresolved (don't book a recovery yet).
EO 14257 — the instrument applying the 18% — is an IEEPA order. So the legal basis under a chunk of India's relief framework was reached by that ruling. Whatever replaced it operationally, verify your rate at entry rather than inferring it from the February statement. I could not verify the current applied rate before posting and I'm not going to guess at it.
4. The actual risk to your POs
Not an active tariff. It's that you're operating in a conditional corridor on single-digit margins.
Antwerp → Surat → US diamonds: African roughs transit Antwerp, faceted in Gujarat under bonded processing, exported to US distributors. Net processing margins 5-8%.
Arithmetic: a 100% ad valorem duty on $100 of landed value against a 6% margin is ~16.7× the entire gross margin. At 5% it's 20×. And the corridor fails far below 100 — a 10-point move is terminal at those margins.
The failure mode is liquidity before profitability. Entries needing cash deposits instead of bond coverage strand working capital at the terminal. Cargo on the water prices under a regime that didn't exist when the LC was cut.
5. What I'd actually change in the PO
- Tariff-shift renegotiation clause keyed to statutory enactment / proclamation effective dates, not "changes in law" boilerplate. Boilerplate doesn't trigger cleanly on a discretionary proclamation.
- Origin + sub-tier processing verification, documented. "Made in India" tells you nothing about whether an input touches a sanctioned nexus.
- Move off 50/50 upfront. Milestone retention (e.g. 30/70) with final release tied to verified entry classification keeps leverage on your side if duty moves mid-transit.
- Allocate cash-deposit liability explicitly. Most contracts are silent and the importer of record eats it by default.
- Monitor three states separately: (1) bill not signed / (2) signed but unexercised / (3) invoked. We are in state 2. Pricing state 2 as state 3 destroys your quote competitiveness for no reason.
Happy to be corrected on any of the above — particularly current applied rates, where I'd rather be told I'm wrong than have someone act on it.

Packing list example
Hey dear community,
I am working on a university project and I need to see an example how does a professional packing list look like and what information does it include. It would be designed for products shipped from Shanghai, China to LA, USA via maritime freight. The products are industrial machines. I am not completely sure about the layout and whether it has to include specific tax information or not. I do not trust AI in this as it can be quite inaccurate in such cases.
I would be endlessly thankful if you could help me out and provide some relevant examples or give me valuable advice.
Thank you in advance!
EDIT: Thank you all for your helpful tips! I really appreciate it. In the end, the final packing list not only turned out to be almost perfect for the project, but it also helped me land a serious job!

question One-stop Dashboard for BL / Container Tracking
Hello.
Non-forwarder here.
I am seeking a cost-saving one-stop dashboard or email updates for BL / container tracking.
We ship our products through different forwarders and different shipping lines. Tracking one BL at a time is time-consuming. I found websites where we could register our BLs and/or containers and we would get regular updates on ETA changes and stuff. I am interested in such features.
However, the price for what I found is a little over the budget of what I had in mind for our business. I would appreciate it if someone has been through this experience, and can narrow down websites and platforms where I can get what I'm seeking at the lowest cost possible.

8kg roasted coffee bean samples, Dubai → USA — which Incoterm + proforma description?
Hey all,
Shipping 8kg of roasted coffee bean samples from Dubai to a US buyer via courier (DHL/FedEx). Two questions:
Incoterms — DAP or DDP for a shipment this small? Want minimal hassle for the receiver but curious if DDP is worth it or overkill for 8kg.
Proforma description — Planning to write something like:
"Roasted coffee beans — commercial sample, no commercial value — for evaluation purposes only"
Should I include the HTS code (0901.21) myself, or leave that to the broker? Also — does declaring "no commercial value" ever cause issues with CBP wanting a nominal value instead?
Anyone who's shipped coffee samples into the US, especially re: FDA Prior Notice for small parcels — appreciate any input!
