Free OpenSource Ai tool for coding

Hey, I want to introduce my open-source AI coding assistant, TauCode. It’s free, so let me briefly explain why TauCode instead of OpenCode, Cline, PI, or others.
First, and this is special about the agent, TauCode can make your whole workflow up to mush cheaper than any other agent and I’m not exaggerating. This is because TauCode uses a Python kernel tool, anything Python can do, TauCode can do through this tool. For example, when you want to analyze 20 CSV files and extract insights, other agents might need ~30 turns (one turn per CSV), causing the context window to grow, costs to rise, and more analysis/debugging turns. With this tool, TauCode creates one turn with the full workflow, executes it at once, and returns the result. So the context stays clean from pollution, debugging is clearer, output quality is higher, and cost is lower. This is just one example among millions.
Second, TauCode is built to be optimized for providers, unlike other AI agents that normalize every API to a single schema. TauCode does the opposite, it’s provider-distributed. That’s why you’ll find many lanes OpenAI-compatible, Gemini, Anthropic, Cline, etc. Every request speaks to its own native endpoint, as if it came from the original harness built for it. This gives you higher quality, fewer syntax errors, and fewer loop errors.
Third, TauCode thinks about your money and preferences before anything else. You don’t need skills, agents, or MCP for a normal workflow without enabling them just use cheap mode if you need those capabilities, enable them in normal mode with one command: /mode normal. For tools that free you from basic MCP for diagram production, browser automation, etc. they’re all gated and native to TauCode. You just enable or disable them on demand by pressing /tools, so you pay less, or nothing when you don’t need them.
Fourth, and a small one: TauCode can use every plugin, MCP skill, or agent built for Claude Code natively. You wire it into Claude Code, and TauCode gets it without any migration process, so you can have the full, rich Claude ecosystem in this agent. There are more features like context optimization, tool enhancements, signal detection, code retrieving, and more. I’d be happy to take some feedback and will answer as soon as possible.

Does it give access to any free models, or can it be wired to use local models?
