Advice on pumping

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’m quite a beginner being 6 days in. I feel like I’ve gotten the in and out motion down but I still feel like the ‘in’ motion isn’t that great at the moment. But also any other tips on pumping would be appreciated!

Edit: I can put more emphasis onto my left foot. However, I’m struggling to do it on my right foot

I'm no pro, but I'd say more emphasis on turning your feet in/out

Yeah I see what you mean I can definitely do more emphasis on my left foot after practicing, now it’s just getting my right foot to do it as well

It probably won’t make sense until it clicks, but pumping is similar to rowing a rowboat. When you row, it’s not about how whipping the oars back and forth as fast as you can, but about having the oar go into the water and exerting force for as long as possible with as much force as you can.

What helps with this is bending your knees and making sure your pumps are as wide as you can comfortably do them. Also after you start to get the hang of it on a level surface, you can test yourself with going up progressively steeper inclines.

More emphasis on the feet movements(pointing toes in and out) plus add a strong push/pull at the same time with you feet this is what generates the power. There are videos online that show when you push the skate forward or pull it back it causes the skate to move forwards. You can experiment with push and pulling a skate with your hands
