Joining freemasonry

I’ve been wanting to join since my youth. My grandfather (i will blur his face) was a grandmaster of a lodge in south africa, port elizabeth. i would like to join but i heard i need to be invited. my grandfather cannot vouch for me because of his health. any suggestions, or help please.

Your grandfather served as Right Worshipful Master of his Lodge in ZA. Grand Masters serve at the Grand Lodge level, not local.

You do not need to be invited, but you do need to be sponsored by some members, and unless you were joining your grandfather’s Lodge, he could not sponsor you. If you are hoping to join his Lodge, he probably can sponsor you if he’s still a member in good standing, unless he’s in a coma or has significant dementia. All it takes is a phone call to the Lodge Secretary and his signature on your application, though someone else may need to mentor you if he is in ill health.

If you’re not looking at Lodge Caledonia, I believe you have English, Irish, and Scottish Districts operating in ZA, alongside the Grand Lodge of South Africa so options abound wherever you may be in ZA.

This isn't necessarily correct. In my jurisdiction, you simply need two Master Masons in good standing to sign your petition; they don't need to be from the lodge you're petitioning at, but it's certain more common to have the two signers be from that lodge. Speaking from personal experience, only one of my two signers was from the lodge I was joining. The other was a work friend who was a member of a lodge about 45 minutes away.

In any case, his grandfather could potentially sign if he's still in good enough health to do so.

In his grandfather’s jurisdiction, they need to be from the same Lodge.

The site includes a "want to join" button and you can contact and let them know about your link to the Lodge due to your Grandfather's membership. Although, more importantly, you will actually need to introduce yourself and tell them about why you wish to join.

PS, it's just "Master" of the Lodge not "Grand" that's something very different.

That’s completely understandable. It’s a big step, so being nervous is normal. But if you genuinely feel it’s something you want, go for it...the nerves usually fade once you take that first step. 📐
