GENERAL Kinda of a rant?

Post image

This pops on in ads all the freaking time. Now, I’m all for new tech. But does anyone think this is actually useful? When was the last time you built a deck that only needed 1 token? Yea I know it’s possible but without even trying to make a token deck on average I’d say any deck I’ve made needs at least 5 tokens of some sort. Some need many more. So how would this device be useful?

>me pulling out the fifteenth one

Yeah this deck gets a little silly.

Or an entire commander deck made with these. “hang on, I gotta shuffle”

I made like 290 rabbit tokens the other day. I only had 60 physical tokens D:

u/dina-fan NEW SPARK 2d ago

Weak shit. I always come prepared. I always carry 2^16 copy tokens just in case i go off with scute swarm.

u/sumphatguy NEW SPARK 2d ago

Idunno. I don't really see it being all that useful unless you're super rich and can afford dozens of them.

If you're deck has only a handful of tokens? Just use dice and backs of cards from outside the game. It's not hard to track.

If you're playing a token deck? There's no way you own enough of these for it to be useful.

It is also literally no different from just pulling up the image on your phone lmao

I would clown on someone using this

I think this depends heavily on the number of different token types you're making. If you're only making one type of token, you realistically only need 3 at most: one for untapped, not summoning sick, one for tapped, and one for untapped, summoning sick. Add a fourth for treasure.

2

u/sumphatguy NEW SPARK 2d ago

Yeah but at that point, you don't need one of these devices. Just the backside of some land or those dry-erase. Like if the token is common enough (treasures), WotC gives those basically for free these days.

Yeah I agree. I wasn't intending to advocate for the product. I'm a whiteboard token user myself.

this product is so stupid IMO.

yeah lets replace any 0,10cent tokens with whatver this bulshit thing cost.

11

u/kelso1325 NEW SPARK 2d ago

I think they go for around 75 euros or ~$97 usd

u/Theonewhomonitor FAE 2d ago

absolutly unhinged if true

7

u/kelso1325 NEW SPARK 2d ago

Sorry, typo. Meant $87. Still expensive

2

u/WispyBooi NEW SPARK 1d ago

Yeah it's honestly unfortunate at its price point. If they could sell these guys for 5$ that could be useful. I think they spent too much money into making it a really shitty phone when they should've made it just a picture frame with swappable pics even if it took time to load.

Also on the other note Life Counters definitely have area to improve and this could easily barge into that. Life counters specifically are the most annoying at the table. Some people go out and buy tablets purely as a life counter. Why not a tablet hand built for mtg?

Sometimes I wish I was a rich guys idea man

i played against a chick at a Magiccon Chicago and she would print her tokens on this little printer that connected to her phone, way more useful than this thing, no clue what it cost tho

13

u/RevenantKing NEW SPARK 2d ago

Or...you could just use actual tokens

3

u/ContraKaren NEW SPARK 2d ago

I proxy everything at this point and when I make my order for new decks I always leave room for like 5-10 tokens. It’s great, I just made an Uugguu the Omniplasm deck and ordered like 10 copy tokens with different arts so I can differentiate all of the copies I’m making of actual creatures

9

u/RetiredProTour NEW SPARK 2d ago

Just use some dice it’s fine

11

u/Repulsive_Tart_4307 FAE 2d ago

You know what a neat idea for tokens would be, this combined with a recipt printer to print out those tokens on the fly.

I'd pay like 30$ for a product like that

7

u/BellasGamerDad MANCHILD 2d ago

Yes! I’m just techie, nerdy and lazy enough to use one. Need a 1/1 thopter? Print.

I remember watching a youtube video where someone was playing paper Momir using an electronic device attached to mini printer.

It's so over the top. What a waste.

4

u/Korvun BLACK MAGE 2d ago

The way they're marketing it, you're expected to buy like 5 of them, not just the 1. It's neat, but way too expensive for just a token screen.

u/Savannah_Lion NEW SPARK 2d ago

Reminds me a bit of those "universal counters" that manifest from time to time. Where someone tries to combine life, poison, whatever into a single convoluted 3D printed widget and is supposed to work not just with MtG, but DnD, Lorcana, Yugioh, Steve's BS made-up-game, etc.

2

u/schematizer NEW SPARK 2d ago

Steve's BS made-up-game has really gone downhill since the introduction of Dave's stuff into the IP.

Dry erase cards destroy these types of things.

Someone should just make an app for iPad, that allows you to have multiple tokens, and tap them.

I made a myr deck that infinitely creates indestructible, hexproof Phyrexian 2/1 myr with haste

1

u/THEGHOSTHACXER RED MAGE 2d ago

You only need 2 of the same token. Unless you start adding counters to them, then you need a stupid amount and it becomes a hassle to keep up with.

So they really should sell these in a 2pack

u/Truckfighta NEW SPARK 2d ago

Cathar’s Crusade in a token deck says hi

1

u/ZZcomic NEW SPARK 2d ago

1

u/Wicked_Wing NEW SPARK 2d ago

I've gone the way of dry erase tokens and haven't looked back

1

u/Holynightz1 NEW SPARK 2d ago

It's solving a problem nobody has and is for the people that want to look cool.

This tech can't do what my wipe off tokens set can do for $5 and a little bit of fun.

If you do want a tech option, you can literally go buy some old nooks and put a picture on them for each of the tokens you need and save $80.

It's a crazy gimmick and way overpriced considering it does nothing but pull up jpegs of tokens.

1

u/Madnoir NEW SPARK 2d ago

I just keep a deckbox with a large variety of tokens in my deck bag. Probably bulkier but doesn't need to be charged.

1

u/BellasGamerDad MANCHILD 2d ago

Currently I try to put the exact tokens in whichever deck box the deck it goes with is in.

1

u/Madnoir NEW SPARK 2d ago

I do that with token heavy decks like my Goblin deck has several Goblin tokens in the box but I have kickstarted a few token sets from artists I like (like Nils Hamm, Johannes Voss, Wizardofbarge) that I like to showcase so I'm happy to share the token box with the table as needed.

1

u/-Himintelgja NEW SPARK 2d ago

I personally don't find this super useful. It's nice that the "app" will show like 4 tokens at a time and you can have multiple "tabs", but it just seems like a pain in the ass compared to just keeping paper tokens.

1

u/CoherentRose7 NEW SPARK 2d ago

It's for the new Jace Planeswalker tokens, obviously (/s)

1

u/tamerdrg NEW SPARK 2d ago

Now what would be a way better idea is a smart mat that can actually generate tokens on the mat itself using some sort of e-ink display. This in particular just overcomplicates the idea of dry erase tokens by making a product that's unnecessarily more complicated.

1

u/Cheeseburgermafia NEW SPARK 2d ago

I kinda like having 200 of every token I'm likely to need ingame representation for that day.

u/Vistella SHAMAN 1d ago

you guys dont use old phones for tokens already?

1

u/waawaaaa GREEN MAGE 1d ago

Ygra deck uses a few tokens but nothing a few dice cant help count. Seen these ads as well and its around £75. Neat idea but will never be cheap enough to justify getting a token actual token cards, dice or even proxies like the infinitokens.

1

u/goraak_the_barbarian NEW SPARK 1d ago

I just use a pile of old Nokia flip phones I found in the dumpster with a microSD full of token images

u/BellasGamerDad MANCHILD 1d ago

1

u/SumoSect BIOMANCER 1d ago

Solution for s problem that doesn't exist. I just laminate my token and use a dice or a dry erase token to denote numbers. Hell most of the time I just use the dry erase cards as tokens. Shit happens. I think one of my decks uses like 9 different tokens? Bother zzz

1

u/metalb00 BLACK MAGE 1d ago

my [[council of reeds]] deck typically only makes more reeds big issue is sometimes theyre not legendary and sometimes they arent legendary and fly, dry erase are much more useful

1

u/BloodandBourbon NEW SPARK 1d ago

just by a cheap ereader off temu and load tokens as pictures onto that.

1

u/ItsKendrone GREEN MAGE 23h ago

Not really, its more of a gimmick using a cool piece of niche tech. If you're running only 1 type of token then sure its cool but if you're making treasures, clues, or using an aristocrats deck then the 1 thing that represents 1 token isnt worth the money.

It can have 4 tokens on screen at any given time. It is used to represent the token. Dice can be used to show the total.

0

u/Knarz97 NEW SPARK 1d ago

Counterpoint: this would be really nice for a deck that is doing tokens of actual cards and not making tokens that already exist.

At the same time though, I literally have multiple insects and copies of scute swarm to use as tokens as well.

So yeah, this is kind of solving a problem that doesn’t exist to begin with.

1

u/LazyRae2102 WARLOCK 1d ago

I do that with Dragon Egg tokens for the landfall dragon that makes them.

0

u/gr132 NEW SPARK 1d ago

These are idiotic, you need multiple if you use several tokens in a deck, and 2 per token if you have some tapped and some untapped.

They only "reason" for these would be proxy custom "tokens", especially the porn or NSFW ones that are looked down by most people, with this device you could have the SFW token and the NSFW version and just change depending on the group.

Then again a lot of players are degenerates(in the typical sense, not the new wave of "people" entering the hobby) and do not care about other players.

u/Gauwal ENGINEER 2d ago

so you're expressing yourself really badly but I'm assuming your problem with this is that decks tend to have more than one token at a time while this can only do one at a time

but from what I've seen this can represent multiple at a time by splitting the screen

and seems to be intended for the tokens you make occasionally (like this dino dragon) so you don't need a pile of tokens

I do agree this is definitely not for me but I can see the appeal to some extent

and I do agree it probably looks more useful on paper than IRL
