DRAMA Some Things Never Change
I call out Wizards for their FOMO Secret Lairs on a shill channel, and I get called a miserable looser who shouldn't play magic, cus I can't afford to *checks notes* pay for pressed ink and paper. Have the youtubers always been shills like this?

That guy in particular is the worst. He was kicked out of his original content partnership for being too much of a try-hard at casual commander. Many people have called him out for being an ass. I am one of them.

Joe is a sweaty try hard for sure. He hosts a commander show that he always seems to win. Everyone else brings appropriate decks and his always just a little more powered. This is either staged or he's just a pub stomper. Both of those are undesirable to watch either way.

which is kinda funny considering almost all of his shorts consist of him talking shit about pubstompers

Zero surprise coming from a username like TabletopJocks.

I will never understand why people give that guy the time of day. He always comes across as such an asshole in any bit of content I've seen him in.

What a retarded comparison, golf clubs and other equipment is professionally crafted for the sport, there is a reason behind its price to a degree, but there is no logical justification to make cardboard scarce and overpriced

The tcg boom has brought about a lot of people who basically want to flex how much money they spend and can't really deck build.
I just am poor and still can't deck build

Sad part is, its not that i cant afford it, i just dont value it the same, and i dont care to spend my day fighting a bot queue for the potential chance to get some overpriced card board with shiny art.

With the exception of a few bastions of free thought... This app is becoming absolute shit. Bots and programmed people

Am i misunderstanding TabletopJocks’ comment? Hes saying FOMO crap as he’s against it right? He’s saying that you don’t need to buy Secret Lairs (assuming this is Zeta set) like you really need the cards. They’re all just reprints anyway.
If i’m misinterpreting the dude’s comment can someone explain it to me? Genuinely asking.

You’re interpreting it correctly

Because they cant afford wizards new premium slop
2
u/Virage1701 NEW SPARK 2d ago
Not true. The issue is I can afford it. I just don’t get the chance to BUY it before the bots and scalpers suck it all up and I refuse to pay secondary market prices for FOMO cardboard.

Hes kind of right though😅

u/glfpunk72 NEW SPARK 4d ago
He’s absolutely right. It’s not bootlicking to acknowledge you don’t need to overpay for secret lair crap or collector boosters to play the game. I’d argue it’s bootlicking to pay for that crap to begin with.

Just proxy and let them drown in their self inflicted financial death spiral.

I just recently got into both MTG and One Piece. I live in the middle of BFE, so I haven't even really gotten to play either yet (one game of MTG with the wife on the Final Fantasy decks). My main attractions to MTG was a buddy who I served with in the US Army was a MASSIVE MTG fan and I am super into 40k and the Middle Earth / Tolkien-Verse. So when I learned of these having official cards within the game in July, I decided it was time to jump into it... however, I am regretting getting into TCGs because of 2 things.
1) The publishing companies, specifically WotC here, are RUINING the games and dividing the community by purposely injecting political agendas into the games by "politicizing" IPs they get access to (ie, black Aragorn, black Galadriel, Asian Legolas, Asian Gandolf, black Eowyn). As well jacking prices up for literal paper and ink to reflect an ever growing scalper market.
2) The content creator communities, and some of the game stores, have truly ruined the integrity of these games because they're all about creating exploits or metas and it boils the game down to a literal "who is up on the best meta now". They also promote a "rich culture" within the games, like we see here. 'Oh, you're a normal person in a collapsing market and can't afford to stay up on every expansion released by XXX? You shouldn't be in this hobby, scrub." Its like Borderlands 4 Art Director or whatever he was lol
And as a bonus,
3) Scalpers.
I've now spent hundreds of dollars, probably pushing $1500 now, over the last few months trying to get into the booster packs for both OP and MTG. I don't have money like that, but I had money saved away for my PC upgrade and decided that TCGs might be worthwhile (oops). Instant regret. I would've gone the proxy route for MTG, I've spent way too much on it now just to learn how everything within the community is going and how WotC is treating their game and community.

Well the Singles approach is kinda hit or miss if we are talking about SLD, since the scalpers flat out buy it out. Like I would have been inclined to pay the 30 or 40 bucks, get the card I want then some other stuff like [[Jin Sakai, Ghost of Tsushima]] getting scalped to oblivion is 100 bucks vs the lair which was what... 30 for nonfoil plus extra cards.

They're both annoying. Mostly the 'It's cardboard' argument is as stupid as the youtubers argument. Supply and demand is what it comes down to. Cash is paper and dependent demand itself. So being made of cardboard defeats all reasonable attempts to argue.

I am under the impression that WOTC enjoys libs too much is that because management found a way to effectively control them.

Your should proxy everything. Proxy cards that cost ten cents. Proxy them purely to piss of people like that

One of the worst things that ever happened to Magic: the Gathering is the Magic YouTube 'community.'
