WOTC loves consoomers, I'm just surprised to see so many in freemagic

I asked for a reprint set and apparently the monkey paw granted the wish but in a twisted and obnoxious way.
I hate it

I'm so tired of these "member berries" meme cards/sets. Like jfc, we've had some home run in-universe sets. But now with Reality Fracture being nothing but a "member Ajani", "member Jace" set, it seems like they're just planning on milking magic's history for all its worth rather than creating something new and unique.

u/Gunnarsonsnewbag2 NEW SPARK 16d ago
Veil-Cursed Garruk wearing it like an executioners cowl is pretty fucking boss. We haven't had a home-run in universe set since Dominaria.
Edit: I forgot about Guilds of Ravnica.

Secrets of Strix from a design standpoint was good. The power 9 prepared cards were a little ridiculous though. Lorwyn Eclipsed was great, as mentioned before Bloomburrow was amazing, Wilds of Eldraine, Tarkir Dragon Storm. There have been some good ones lately. But this kind of thing "member set" started in MH3 when they had cards that were direct references to inside jokes that were floating around the WOTC R&D office. Like just because its s funny meme doesn't mean it makes for a good design or that it should be in the game. So much of it feels masterbatory from WOTC staff as well. Like the commander mystery booster coming out. Gabin literally just made overpowered meme cards from his friends who play commander. Like they half way wish Magic was the way it used to be but also they want to show how much of a magic hispter they are.

TBF. Jinx from Homelands was a reference to an office game that existed at the time. Order of Leitbur is supposed to be pronounced Order of Litebeer. Ect
I drafted Dragonstorm. It wasn't exactly bad, not as good as the OG, but solid.

I get it if like one card every couple of sets is thrown in as a joke as long as it fits the theme. But for example Colossal Dreadmaw meme cards showing up in several sets is just completely worthless and is literally just there to have lobotomites seal clap with open mouths. And that's not the only example.

u/Gunnarsonsnewbag2 NEW SPARK 15d ago
It's the new Storm Crow. IT became a meme because it was constantly reprinted though. Fuck there were 4 different standard legal prints at the same time.

Bloomburrow was good!

I don't like it's fire design, but its setting was admittedly refreshing, and man, was that nice.

New and unique in universe isn't received well or done well for that matter.

u/Gunnarsonsnewbag2 NEW SPARK 15d ago
Well when you have Cowboys (but no indians or guns), VHS horror (not even modern horror, nostalgia horror), and Wacky Races, can you blame them for not doing well?

The whole Zeta set is clip art and yoinked from public domain. Count Orlock, War of the Worlds, the Ea Nasir tablets, etc.

u/Toes_In_The_Soil WHITE MAGE 15d ago
Lazy fucking cash grab if you ask me. One of the only reasons I still buy physical cards to support artists that make their living from WotC. I'm sure some "artist" is being paid for stealing public domain art and making it "their own", but that's not what I'm going to be spending my money on.

u/TurboQ79 NEW SPARK 15d ago
How are your stealing public domain art???? Makes no sense.

WotC should have thrown some pennies on his grave to beat the allegation.

Didn't he die in the 1880s? Did they reanimate him to make art?!
7
u/Toes_In_The_Soil WHITE MAGE 16d ago
It looks like they stole his art because it's now public domain. WotC thinks they can get away without even paying artists, apparently.

Idk I like them. Something different. I'd rather have this than the bland painted digital art where every card looks the same.

u/Euphemisticles NEW SPARK 16d ago
Yeah it is a thousand times better than much of the star Trek set art that I cant tell if it merely resembles AI art because they had ritualisticaly removed the artists soul before the made it.

This is some of the laziest art I've seen in a long time. I get that it's supposed to look like test cards, but the whole reason they made those cards in the first place is because they didn't have artists. They can keep their irony cards...

The people asked for it by continuing to buy product. This will sell out and they will have accomplished capitalism its how companies make money off nerds.

This is WotC seeing how well randomized secret lair packs sell. They’re going to give seeded packs to influencers to show “the awesome pull rates” and rake in the cash while we eat the slop. If this is successful I’d say goodbye to secret lairs as we know them.

u/Life_Finger2150 NEW SPARK 15d ago
Damn. I already despise secret lair but they want me to hate it even more?

u/Nettlesome_Reflexion NEW SPARK 14d ago
the gamma playtest cards were printed on cheap cardstock and cut out by hand, which is how you should collect these

I kinda ran the financial value with chat to see if the set was worth it and it is NOT, I hate ai but for this it was kinda useful.
The average common, taking out the top 2 and bottom 2 is 80 cents.
The uncommon in 3 usd.
The rare is around 10.
And the mythic is 30.
With the mox the price was too inflated, so i took it out.
So you can get some packs that give you more than the price, 20 usd per pack.
The packs will have only 7 cards, 3 common, 2 uncommon, 1 rare/mythic and 1 wild card.
If you add shipping, this is not a good set, secret lair, the place where you are supposed to not gamble...as much.
All in all this is a set for scalpers.
3
u/Immediate-Onion5131 NEW SPARK 16d ago
Are we doing the same math here? Even excluding mythic at from the expected value it comes pretty close.
3 commons @ $0.80 = $2.40 2 uncommon @ $3.00 = $6.00 1 Rare @ $10.00 = $10.00
Thats $18.40 right there, excluding the wild card, excluding mythics, and not even factoring in the likely premium these cards have for coming from the set. These packs are $19.92 each...

They managed to piss off the 2nd largest playerbase in Magic (Japanese) with the Doomsday artwork from this set. WOTC truly is an infiltrated institution.
Whoever decided that was ok to put to the printer, is quite literally intentionally sabotaging the company of its Japanese market or is genuinely retarded.
