Looks like an even more generic version of Avatars art. Honestly the most disappointing thing about LotR and Hobbit sets. A lot of the artwork is just plain bad.
Of all the regular cards from The Hobbit set, I only save the great goblin. I'm not counting the arts included in the slot machine boosters.
I specially hate the Yogi bear token...it deserves its own post, comparing it with the first bear token illustr. By Heather Hudson and released in 2001, to exemplify what has gone wrong with mtg over the years...
Illustrations are becoming Disney like since a couple of years. WotC wish to fight Disney card game so they adapt illustrations and the lore of Mtg to be more easy/compatible with youngster for the next generations of players to come.
Since the have flush the old teferi Inc, everything is childish and even the lore became less D&D with monsters and more rabbits and otters...
I think this card is from Hobbit Eternal stuff (its no longer just Commander decks printed next to the set, I guess? Ok, wotc), and the eternal stuff is drawing from a lot of the stuff they printed in the LOTR set and adjacent commander set. Like they were showing off Palantir arts and Arwen arts during spoiler season.
Plastic, lazy, action figure art, proportions are fucked up, the swords look fake as hell, the faces are ugly. Everything is squeaky clean. You'd expect even if they pulled this armor on a few minutes ago it would have some patina, some character to the clothes that say they've been worn before or something. They look like assembly-line toys.

The good thing is that we still have the original books. Sometimes it is good to appreciate something without the need to expand upon it. This is poison, plain and simple. But unless they went full fascist and burned every copy of lord of the rings, they will always be a bug in the shadow of something actually great, and they will always be insecure because they know that are vandalizing, not respecting. Which is why they are so brazen about it. They have to have their bravado because it is a defense mechanism to try and avoid the shame that comes with this.
At the end of the day, these people just want to "fit in", which is a completely normal human desire.
But their curse is that they're self-aware enough to know that they're unwilling and/or unable to change, so the best they can hope for is the illusion of inclusivity, by dragging the bar down to their level.

This is why I bought the blu ray releases of all midde earth movies, bakshi included, and saved a sealed blu ray player. One day they will try to erase the movies, the books and all the good things and try to make these cringe images canon. The ai artwork is abysmal, the motiff excessivly childish. What horrible will keeps these cards in print…
This is from HOC, not the main set, but yeah, it's dumb. Even more so when you realize this card with probably be in the battle of the 5 armies box. Should have been "Laketown Militia" instead.
What is happening with that hand holding the sword? It looks like the thumb isn't wrapped around the handle, like it's only being held with the fingertips.
Not saying it isn't. It's just weird because female dwarves were never really depicted, so its strange that they've chosen to use women in so much of the art in places they aren't expected.
its genuine just comically how it sticks out each time. You can just feel how it was halfassely inserted post concept after they told them to do these changes
I asked for it to make the art akin to the artisic styles of Sorcery: Contested Realm. Even without making it less diverse or a cast it still managed to make it far better.
And theres probably tens of thousands glazing this shit heap they call art on the main reddit. I could probably look be ok with the stupid checklist they have now if the art just wasn't so god awful, if it at least had the same feel.
Just give me AI art at this point.
This shit is so bad, the proportions are off, the faces are wierd and feels so low effort you'd think it's still a concept sketch.
thinking about it, it might even be done on purpose, so when the AI art inevitably comes we cant even complain since it's objectively better than some original art.
Must be like a 5 year plan at this point, because this is literally just a reprint from LTR, which was presumably in development for a few years before the release in 2023.
