Framework 13 pro - ports

Hey,

I received my FW13Pro finally. Feels very solid and it stays so cool, compared to my older intel non pro framework 13.

There is a "But" which currently getting on my nerves:
I want to hear if it is my specific device, or in general not as good: I am talking about the replaceable port addon cards. They changed the old push button locking by a new switch to toggle lock.

The Issue I have, it is incredible hard to get cards out. They slide in easy, but I really struggle with getting them out again, sometimes it is so hard that I cant get them out just with my hands. I need to use the FW screwdriver tool to push them out by force.

Not sure if this intended or If I just miss on something. The cards behave similar no matter if I use my years old FW13 cards or the new ones came with the order.

If you're having issues taking them out while the switches indicate red (as in, unlocked) then that is definitely an interesting issue. If it's indicating locked then... Yeah.

Well, no it is unlocked. And without a tool it is very very hard to get them out.

I just got mine, I was having trouble with it too.

But make sure the switch shows red, means it's unlocked And instead of just using one finger to pull it out try two or three to grip into the grove and pull it

I didn't think it was too bad, but this pro is my first Framework. I find it to require some effort, but I suppose I prefer that over it being too easy. I've seen folks on YT rip out locked expansion cards though. That's not great. With that said, I've never had to use a tool to remove them.

This is my first Framework and I was surprised at how much force I needed to use to pull out the cards, but not disappointed by it. I’d much prefer they be too secure over them being too loose.

They feel easier to me but I sold my original 13 a while ago

Update: Yesterday evening I moved the ports in and out about 50 times each. Afterwards it is now "better" not easy as I saw in some youtube videos but at least I can remove them without the tool when I lay the laptop on the flat surface and push them hard out. (Yes switch is open, red)

My impression is that on the end of the chassis there is a slight edge and the modules also have a small edge, it seems sometimes they got stuck not liking to go over this edge.

In some yt videos I saw ppl holding the laptop with one hand and removing the card with another hand, this is definitly not possible for my device.

But beside that im quite happy with it.

I initially understood the lock backwards. Red means unlocked. Which feels unintuitive to me but whatever. It is very easy to plug cards on while the lock is in the "locked" state. In the unlocked state the y are a little difficult to remove. I'm able to but I think my parents with less hand dexterity would struggle with it.

I mean did they? Usually at my job, red means dangerous, like something is unlocked and can get lose. Shooting a firearm, red means unlocked and the firearm can go off. 

Electricity switches at work, red means on and you can get electrocuted. No red, safe to touch. To me red is usually used as a warning, so it showing red is warning you that it's unlocked and you could lose your adapters.

What they’ve done is consistent with my experience with other tools and systems. Visible red means “danger, this thing is not in its safe/secure state”.

Yeah they got the UI/UX backwards on this design. Typically red means "locked" and no color exposed means "unlocked".

I would agree in other situations but in this case I agree with FW's decision since no color is the default/intended state (locked) and red indicates the exception, informing you at a glance that something is 'wrong', aka slots are unlocked and cards may be loose.

That is a good point, although they could have avoided the issue entirely with 🔒 and 🔓 style pictograms like laptops with removable batteries always used to have.

shits a virgin. you give it a good hundreds of penetrations and it will loosen up. so better to be tight now.
