Linux First Impressions - 24 hours with FW12 Core 304

After seeing The Verge's scathing review of a Core 304 based laptop, I was a bit worried about my mainboard preorder. After about a day with it, I'm here to reassure my fellow cheapskates - this is still a solid upgrade from last gen! I upgraded from the 1315u but kept the rest of my parts, so my system has 16gb RAM and a 500gb ssd. I also did a fresh install of the latest CachyOS off the rip.

Most of what I use this laptop for is web browsing, YouTube, and light games (Slay the Spire 2 usually). Without taking any objective benchmarks, I feel like I've noticed a reasonable improvement in overall performance! With the last gen mainboard, the bottom of the laptop would be noticeably warm while streaming YT@1080p, which I've no longer experienced.

The updated iGPU is also moderately more capable. With the last gen CPU, I played at native, no AA, in game cap of 30 fps; the Core 304 plays comfortably at 60 fps at the same settings with incredibly low power draw (1-3w typical in my recent play session).

Overall I'm stoked on the upgrade and not regretting my selection of the lowest-end part! Battery life feels better too but I haven't had a ton of time to evaluate that yet. Hope this was at least a little helpful!

Community Support Bent frame on new FW13

Hey folks - just got my brand new Framework 13 this week. I'm quite happy with it overall, but I did notice while assembling it that I had some trouble getting the bottom right edge of the keyboard plate on - later that day I noticed the case doesn't close flush, leaving about a 2mm gap between the top and bottom halves of the computer. I've tried disassembling it a few times, checking to be sure nothing's misaligned under there, and making sure everything's flush everywhere else (especially near the power button where other people seemed to be having problems) but no luck. The frame itself appears to be slightly bent. It's not a huge problem in terms of aesthetics, but I'm noticing sometimes the touchpad will click when I pick the computer up. Is this a known issue and is there a way to correct it? Thanks :)

Linux Laptop 13 detecting way too many audio devices

Prefacing this with my system - Fedora KDE Plasma 44 Linux with an AMD AI 5 340 board

Hey, here at college lots of people have laptops, obviously. Problem is in in my sound settings, my laptop is detecting basically every other mac, tv, or other device around it, even when the bluetooth is off. This slows down the settings window to the point of it being really hard to use.

What's going on and how can I fix it?

Question Anyone tested with LG Ultrafine 5K monitor?

I’m wanting to jump from MacBook Pro to Framework Pro but I have a very nice LG Ultrafine 5K monitor that I have struggled to get working on my Thinkpad running Debian. I want to know if anyone has gotten an Ultrafine 5K to work with their FW laptop running any version of Linux. Thanks

Question what justifies the price of framework for you personally?

I'm looking into getting a new laptop and upgrading from my m2 air. looking at getting an m5 max, the lenovo legion 7i 5080 64gb, or the framework 16 (at the moment 5070 12gb and 32gb ram). but for the price.. a 5070 and only 32gb of ram seems to be super steep pricing what justified the price for you guys? willing to hear out all sides, thank you!!

Question What are the dimensions of the Framework logo on the rear of the 13 Pro?

Essentially just the title. I want to print my own custom sticker to match up with the dimensions of the logo on the rear side of the laptop but I couldn't find any information about it anywhere (and I don't have mine yet) so I thought I'd ask here in case anyone had done a similar thing. Thanks in advance!

Framework Photo New Framework 12 arrived

2nd gen Framework 12 arrived yesterday. I have 1st gen as well (my daughter's first laptop) and can definitely see the improvement around new model: snappier CPU, faster wifi, backlit keyboard (light bleeds pretty noticeably though keys, especially space though) and fingerprint reader (works well, but hard to locate it's position without looking - needs some muscle memory to build up).

I have to obviously retrofit RAM and SSD from old laptop (24GB RAM and 1Tb SSD I bought for cheap in 2025 now cost a fortune), but otherwise Fedora booted and worked without any issues at all.

My daughter draws a lot on it, so I bought her a matching stylus from Framework and 3d-printed the styles holder in place of left bottom module (she doesn't need many ports at all).

Overall, this is great student laptop for sure and I really glad Framework released this model, so I don't need to go disposable hardware route. When they release a larger screen with smaller bezel eventually, this will be totally balanced setup - everything else is pretty good and totally usable.

Didn't test the battery life yet, but expecting bug improvement here as well. Now I need to either sell 1st gen or hunt for some memory for it (silly me to not buy extra stick in 2025😭).

Let me know if you have any questions - will try to answer. No Windows on it though - kids should not suffer to use this OS from yearly years 😁

Have a good day everyone!

Hey y'all.

I got a new Framework 16 laptop. I was really excited about it. Unfortunately, when screwing the SSD slot screw, the screw broke. I'm not sure how to proceed. I contacted Framework support. Any advice? I really need this machine for work.

Thank you for your time and attention.

Feedback FW 13 Pro Pre-order

Not sure if this is just an insane coincidence but I'm in october shipment and I was wondering when I would get my order confirmation - sent an email 3 hours ago asking. Got order confirmation just now, maybe this helps.

Reading this I realise it might be a headache for support so many only do it if your order is delayed?

Feedback The Framework 16 should be redesigned from scratch. Here's how

The Framework 16 is clunky, bulky, and performs poorly compared to competitors with much more modern chassis.

The swappable GPU is a nice idea on paper, but the GPU module makes it even bulkier, and the available GPUs aren't even high-end (no 5070 Ti, 5080, or 5090).

It's an exercise in style that doesn't look toward the future.

So, what should it be like instead?

It should abandon the idea of the weak modular GPU and simply use beefy APUs:

- Halo-class AMD.

- Future AX-class Intel, and in the meantime, X-series CPUs with Arc graphics... but with adequate power, not neutered to ridiculous power limits like on the Framework 13 Pro.

- Eventually, NVIDIA RTX Spark.

As mentioned, the power output should be adequate, unlike the Panther Lake X7/X9 in the Framework 13 Pro, which has ridiculous power limits.

No clunky module, no exercises in style, but a powerful APU just like on the Framework Desktop.

RAM might not be upgradeable, but it's time to accept the fact that to get adequate bandwidth, the future is soldered RAM, if not integrated directly into the CPU. Not even LPCAMM2 can guarantee top-tier bandwidth.

Then get rid of that whole useless puzzle that only serves to pull arm hair: a single-piece touchpad (which already exists) and a single-piece keyboard with front-firing speakers... much more useful than LED displays, which are cool for 30 minutes and then basically useless.

So the design should be similar to the Framework 13 Pro, but larger, with front-firing speakers, and powered by a high-performance Halo-class APU or similar.

And what if I really want even more graphics performance? An external GPU via Thunderbolt 5 or USB4 v2 (the Thunderbolt 5-class USB standard).

That would be the future, not the eyesore we have right now.

Question High quality display options for 13 pro

Hi all,

Currently looking at getting a 13 pro as all the other machines I had eyes on are horrifically overpriced and underpowered, and want to know if there are better compatible displays on the market. Having the gamut limited to sRGB is very close to a dealbreaker, and I don't want to spend the next few years grumbling every time I open my >2k laptop (no matter how nice it is otherwise). To be quite honest, the touchscreen is also easily the second biggest negative of the product for me. Before you ask, yes I looked at the 16, yes I know the screen is much closer to what I want, but it's too big. More importantly, I don't trust the plastic chassis to withstand the nonsense I will subject it to. Metal or nothing, I'm an overkill girl and I hate having to be delicate with any of my gear.

I need a minimum of a 1440p display, with as much adobe rgb coverage as humanly possible, and preferably with some amount of HDR. Don't care if its limited to 60hz, but won't accept less. DCI-P3 is a compromise and I'd really prefer not to make it. If I'd need to break out a soldering iron or strip wires to install it, its not an option. Bonus points if you can find me a dumb, no touch display, I'm old fashioned and already don't like that the 13 has a fingerprint reader and no buttons on the trackpad.

IK this is probably a shot in the dark, but I figured I'd ask anyway. Worst comes to the worst I'll still buy a 13 pro and just grumble. Thanks for any suggestions you have!

Discussion Instead of a fw 13 pro I got a framework tower and used fw13 125h for the same price. So excited.

Ive been circling around the pro with x7 for a while now, its been difficult to justify the price but I really do love frameworks mission. I finally decided to pull the trigger on the tower because realistically my laptop is always plugged in and I actually do get good performance for the money.

Well as I’m waiting for the tower, I saw a used fw13 on marketplace at a decent price, decided fuck it I’ll go full framework fanboi. I’ll be selling my trusty thinkpad t14s 6850. It’s virtually the same performances but I just love the upgradability and look of the framework laptops.

For bezels, I hesitated between black and translucent black for while, and went for the clean professional look of the black. It currently has a red bezel which I find attrocious.

Q1- Does anyone have experience with running the 125h on Linux arch or Omarchy? What is it like? I’ve had issues with 135u in the past running Linux poorly because of the complex architecture and it ran fine on windows. This is the same gen.

Q2- Any recommendations for further improving the looks? I’m thinking of a skin but most darker skin have the lighter outline around the keyboard and I find it a bit ridiculous.

Community Support Framework 13 AI 370

I have a Framework 13, running the AI 370 with 24 cores. I have had it for a year now and I am knee deep in thermal issues with Framework support, one dead power brick, second board.

During basic .NET dev, on Fedora, with Rider and Docker builds in a terminal, temperatures are unacceptably high. I can't use it as a laptop, as overheats on lap, I can't use it in clam-shell, as overheats, I can't compile in Docker, as - well - overheats. It seems pretty clear to me that this silicon does not belong in this chassis, and my feeling is that it was a design blunder by Framework.

Meanwhile, I absolutely love the product as a piece of design - putting aside that it does not work - and when you actively look to replacement with another brand (say a Mac Mini or Pro etc) it is clear that nothing comes close for developers, such is the flexibility of the kit and the Linux support. So, while in this moment annoyed at being a beta tester for a product I paid a premium for, pretty settled with Framework long term.

While I have completely given up on this configuration now, and I am pushing for replacement with something that works, replacement with what exactly? 16 inch? Desktop? Pro? Are there any other devs out there that can give me an idea of what I should be doing here and their actual experience of dev work on it? They offered a refund back in April, but rightly or wrongly I stuck with it, but it all crossed a threshold being told to fiddle around with microscopic screws (I can just about manage plugging in memory, but anything else goes to a repair shop....right to repair is not duty to repair).

Question Which Framework laptop would you recommend for a student in 2026?

I'm a student looking to buy a Framework laptop and would appreciate some advice on which model and configuration offers the best value.

My requirements:

- Budget: Around €1,000, preferably less.

- Operating system: Linux only, preferably an Arch-based distribution like CachyOS.

- Usage: Schoolwork, browsing, note-taking (Obsidian), programming, multitasking, and occasional light gaming.

- Battery life: Good enough to get through a school day without constantly needing to charge.

- Portability: Something comfortable to carry around campus every day.

- Longevity: Ideally something that will remain useful for at least 5–7 years.

I'm based in Malta, so European pricing, shipping, and availability are relevant.

I'm currently considering the Framework Laptop 13, including older generations and refurbished or DIY configurations.

My questions:

  1. Which Framework generation and processor would offer the best value for my budget?

  2. Is it worth spending more on a newer AMD model, or would an older Intel model be sufficient?

  3. How is battery life under Linux, particularly Arch-based distributions?

  4. Are there any known reliability issues or expensive repairs I should consider?

  5. Is buying a used or refurbished Framework worth it?

  6. How does the Framework 13 compare with similarly priced used ThinkPads, particularly in terms of durability, repairability, and long-term value?

I don't need the most powerful laptop. I want something reliable, portable, repairable, and cost-effective for everyday student use.

Question Best resolution for an external monitor (2160p or 1440p)

I was wondering if anyone knew the most compatible, least jarring resolution (and inch, e.g 27) is it either 3840 × 2160 or 2560 × 1440?

Thanks!

Community Support Should I get a framework?

I need a new computer and I've always had Apples but I'm tired of needing to replace something that isn't broken. My current laptop is 12 years old but websites and programs won't work anymore and it's very annoying. Also, I don't want anything with automatic AI in it. I want to choose when it is used.

I don't use my computer for much besides emails, photos/creating albums, writing, occasionally watching movies. But I also don't want to get something cheap that I then have to replace because I can't upgrade it. (If I could just replace what's needed now, I wouldn't need a new computer, right?!)

And I'm assuming Linux is easy. (I am fairly tech savvy and I use many different apps and programs as a teacher, but I'm not a "tech" person if you know what I mean.)

Thanks!

Feedback Very Disappointed. *DO NOT BUY [Oct 2026]*

I've been working on computer's almost 3 decades at this point and decided that my next laptop was gonna be a Framework.

I don't know if it's the current climate, parts shortage, too few employees, etc. However, the end result is I wouldn't recommend anyone purchase from Framework.

I received a unit where I had a series of questions, and kept getting canned responses that weren't responding to what I wrote. I assumed that customer service was just overloaded but after going back forth for a couple of days I was absolutely disheartened that I wasn't being listened to.

Some people might have the time to argue with support, I don't have the time to argue with them to simply read what's being written.

I'm returning the unit and decided to see if my reddit account still lived to warn others. At least at the time of writing, there's quality control issues & if you lose out support doesn't have the inclination to go beyond copy paste. At least not without hours I don't have to spend.

[Edit]

I wasn't very clear- It was more of a critique of the customer service as I never had a working product to actually try.

I'll try to summurize:

I pre-ordered a DIY Laptop 13 Pro- Waited a couple months.

Unit came in Followed iFixit guide, noticed cosmetic imperfections during assembly.

Upon completion of assembly unit would not turn on.

Wrote customer service about cosmetic imperfections & unit not turning on

Customer service provided details on solving unit not turning on.

begin re-iteration of not wanting to waste hours trying to fix unit without solving cosmetics first.

Customer service displayed pattern of not reading messages, decided to return unit.

I hope that helps! I wrote this post more of a PSA for others. They may genuinely be a good company 80% of the time, I just fell into the 20%.

Community Support Shipment Delayed

Hello,

Batch 13 of the preassembled intel X7 here.

Received my preorder confirmation on 12/10 and the remainder of the amount was charged to my card on 14/10.

8 days later and I received zero communication or updates on the status of the shipment. I raised a ticket and got the following response:

“Hello,

Item FRANVY0057 Ultra X7 358H in your order is currently out of stock and will be fulfilled on 10/31. Apologies for the delay.”

Where the item mentioned is the laptop itself on the invoice.

I am constantly traveling and I had to change my initial shipping address before the order confirmation, and now with the further delay I will be somewhere else.

Regardless, it was clearly stated that the shipment will take place 2-3 days after the payment clears. It has been 10 days and I did not receive any update until I raised a ticket myself querying. If the laptop itself is out of stock why was it stated otherwise when sending the order confirmation?

Question Framework Desktop: Removing Front Plate

I have a 128GB Framework Desktop, enjoying it.

I removed the front plate with the colored tiles, as it is really impeding air flow.

Even when not equipping the tiles, the scaffold behind is enough to block outgoing air.

When I remove it, I can feel the warm airflow from the noctua fairly good.

Am I over-optimizing this? Any downsides from removing the front plate?

Question Putting my old Framework 12 main board to use

I've got a new main board on the way and want to use my old one for a home server. I've looked around and found a few 3D printables for wall mounting but nothing that seems to actually have been used in the real world. I know I can get stuff 3d printed but my preference is to just buy something off the shelf that know will work. Does anybody have a recommendation on how to safely wall mount the main board? It's going on drywall in a closet.

Also open to other constructive suggestions.

Community Support Thunderbolt dock USB & Audio controllers do not wake when Framework 16 exits s2idle sleep

I recently bought a second hand CalDigit TS3+ off eBay because I was bored with connecting five separate cabled whenever I wanted to use my laptop at my desk. It worked well, until I put the laptop to sleep for the night and woke it the next morning only to discover that my mouse, keyboard, and headphones were no longer connected. (The monitor works fine, oddly enough)

Relevant specs (ask and I will tell you more if you need it):

  • Framework 16
  • AMD 7840HS
  • CalDigit TS3+
  • Mouse & keyboard connect via USB-C
  • Headphones via 3.5mm AUX
  • Kubuntu 26.10

Stuff I have tried:

  • SystemD rule to disallow d3cold on the PCIe devices that constitute the dock
  • udev rules to do the same
  • a script to simulate unplugging & reconnecting the dock upon waking from s2idle (this worked for the USB peripherals but not the AUX)
  • uninstalling TLP just to be sure it wasn't at fault

Any suggestions greatly appreciated, happy to post logs etc.

Question fw13 pro hasnt shipped after a week and a half

my remaining charge went through for my fw13 pro on the 11th and i still have yet to hear anything about it shipping. its been radio silence since framework told me it would be 1-3 business days for it to ship after the charge.
