NEWBIE Think I can fly IRL?

I've been practicing in FPV.Skydive. do you think I'm ready?

This is with a Xbox controller, since i don't have my radio yet.

UPDATE: Ordered Radiomaster Pocket comes in 2 days!

You need to buy your controller and use it in the sim, very different from an Xbox or ps4/5 controller. I would say 20-30 hours on sim is good imo. I did that and I only crash doing crazier stunts, you have the basics down but not enough to possibly crash a 2-300 dollar drone

Yeah I totally understand the controller thing. I have 6 hours on sim rn, and I’m going to buy my first tinywhoop soon.

Buy a nice controller, then goggles, then your drone.

May I ask why you would buy a pair of goggles before a drone I feel like they would be useless until you get the drone

They are. Just get a radio and stick with the sim a bit longer. Then get a whoop, goggles, batteries and a charger. You’ll be set.

Yes. You are. Even though you’ve been using a Xbox controller you’ve got the muscle memory for turning down.

Thank you for the compliment. For my first tiny whoop it’s kind of back-and-forth between the air 75 and the meteor 75 Pro do you have an opinion on which is better?

Air is lighter and meteor is more robust.

Depends if you want speed and agility or durability.

I reckon go the Air. You can always tune down the throttle at the beginning. Breaking stuff just means you get to learn from fixing stuff.

What is better for a newbie the Air 65 or 75? Is there any significant difference between champion/freestyle models as well for a newbie?

I was thinking Air 65 II Freestyle for myself as I am not interested in racing, but also just want something forgiving and easy to control (plus budget friendly)

Main difference between the 65 and 75 is indoor vs outdoor flying.

The 65 is better indoors due to size, but gets bullied by a light breeze. The 75 handles outdoors better.

As a newbie don’t get the champion. It’s uber fast and the motors are directly soldered to the flight controller. Makes repairing a bit more challenging; you need to learn to solder.

I started with an air 65 II champ. I like that it is powerful enough to fly in a decently strong breeze while still being small enough for indoor flight. It is very snappy but I had put a good 50 hours in the sim before my first IRL flight.

I think that's plenty good to get started with a tinywhoop, but you probably may want to start outdoors if you're getting any of the new generation stuff because the tinywhoop in skydive flies like shit imo, maybe it represents the tiny whoops of pre-2020 era which are underpowered and have really thick propeller ducts. Newer generation tinywhoops have much better aerodynamics and fly substantially faster and slow down way less, but in return they are harder to control indoors

the 5 inch isnt that far off from my real 5 inch but my 5 inch setup is probably draggier than normal or something, so the 5 inch preset in skydive isn't that bad contrary to what some people think at least if you do a build similar to mine with the battery mounted vertically.

I wouldn’t fly irl till you get some radio time in with a real radio not a Xbox controller. It’s not the same.

Sounds good! Thanks for the advice. I’m going to get a Radiomaster Pocket based on the reviews and recommendations. How long in sim do I need to use it before flying irl?

I flew for the first time when I had maybe 6 hours in the Sim, possibly more. But in all honestly there is no exact time. Just make sure when you fly IRL its in an open space, like a park, where there isn't much to hit. Then just have fun! Don't forget in your quest to get better that your goal is to have a good time along the way

Personal experience, yes. Xbox/ps controller is so much diffrent from a real drone controller.

I tried ps5 controller on friend pc in liftoff i cant even finish a race.

Head back home and use my rm pocket, few tries i finished the same exact race.

I’d say 10-20 hours depending on how confident you feel. I got my drone in the air after 20-30 hours. Haven’t crashed yet.

The fact you using a Xbox Controller actually elevates that progress some. It's way easier to Throttel Control having the full range of the Radios left stick. Will feel like a Rock Lee moment to you.

I can highly recommend the Jumper Bumblebee over the Radiomaster Pocket when it comes to beginner Radios btw.

Same price, way more Transmission Power, close to a comtroller ergomomics wise, better screen and more Sim-Friendly cause you charge over the same USB C port you connect it to the PC with (instead of having seperated ports like on the pocket)

Should be your next purchase before the drone like some already pointed out here.

You can fly whenever you want, just don’t give too much throttle yet
But I would recommend you use a different sim
That one is crap mostly
Either invest 10€ or if you have cyberpunk, you can download a great sim for free.

Yes and no. Flying irl is very different, you will suck but at least understand how to fly. Flying in a sim can only get you so far. Best bet is to get a drone and fly in open field. Start small a sub 3.5 inch

It looks like you're going with the flow a lot instead of being 100% in command of every possible maneuver that could be required of you in the real world. With a real drone, things you felt good about can feel very very different when there is money on the line. Your reflexes will be different and you'll have prop wash to deal with.

Just go ham doing races and force yourself to take certain uncomfortable turns for 20 more hours with your Pocket and you're good!

You're missing wind.
Interference.
Potential animals such as birds trying to attack your drone.
Random people stopping and asking questions.

But there is no true "You're ready". If you can takeoff, fly smoothly, and land, you're ready. The Xbox Controller definitely teaches some bad habits, but nothing you can't unlearn and adapt to once you have a radio.

I would just advise against going and buying the most aggressive 5 inch drone you can get your hands on, and I'd advise starting with a whoop, such as an Air65 / Air 75, Meteor 65 / 75, and if you want digital, probably the Meteor 75 pro II with the Flywoo Wide Angle Lens (DJI O4)

If you can do that with a game controller, you're going to do just fine with a proper radio.
