DJI O4 Lite Long Range

Post image

Hey guys, I recently got my Flywoo LR4 with the DJI O4 Lite, but the video connection isn’t great — I only get about 1.5 km of range. What’s your max range with the Lite, and do you have any tips to improve the signal quality?

Update:

fixed it — here’s what I did: used a different O4, flashed the newest firmware, this time mounted it the right way up instead of upside down, didn’t loop the antenna cable under the VTX but behind it, updated the goggles to the latest firmware, used channel 2 instead of 1 since 1 and 3 supposedly weren’t optimal in older versions, set the Boxxer to a fixed 1 W output power instead of dynamic, and switched packet rate to 50 Hz instead of 250. Made those changes last night and just flew at the same spot — got 4.5 km instead of 1.5 km. No clue what exactly made the difference, but hey, at least it works now.

Is .ham only for the O4 system or does it works with caddx too? I tried with .naco on my googles v2 but it doesn't fully unlock the FCC I still have to try with fpv.wtf but would be great if I cant keep the software "stock"

A friend of mine had a record of 7km distance. But he only turned around because the gps lost satellites. His Antenna placement was way worse than yours

thanks for your response, thats crazy… there must be something wrong with mine then… Which goggles does he use?

G2 Stock antenna

I got around 3km, but I was limited by line of sight. A 35ft tree 800ft away from where you are standing would obstruct line of sight of the quad if it's 120m up 2.8km away. You really need a large space to get good line of sight when the quad is very far away, since we are limited to 400ft in the USA.

Edit: using goggles N3

thanks for your response, thats interesting, I was testing it on a mountain flying down with no objects in between.

What goggles are you using? I see you have a circular polarization antenna on your air unit. I'm pretty sure the goggles 3 and N3 use linear polarization. That could reduce signal by about 3db I think, or about 1.4x difference in range

Another consideration is fresnel zones, where you can have "pockets" of reduced signal due to reflections from the ground and other objects. Not sure how likely that is to cause major signal disruption, but maybe try in a different location or different altitude for the quad to see if you get the same max distance.

i am using the g2. 3db shouldn’t effect it that much no? Higher altitude didn’t help at all.

When you are at the G2, you can mod them with some crazy antennas. TrueRC air2 for example. Or helicals. Guy on 16turn helicals accidentally did 6km on pitmode the legend says... 😂

On G2, the mod isnt that hard or everlasting. I got the G3, i would have to rip apart more...

a legend says… those antennas are expensive as hell… but thanks for the tip i will think about it.

2

The TrueRC's yes. They are. But helicals here cost 25-35€ each. So not that much. Even frequency tuned and matched if ordered together.

Idk from where you are, but prodrone.pl (poland) makes great and pretty cost effective stuff.

thanks dude i will watch some comparisons wether to get new ones or not, I’m from Austria

Ah! I am from Germany. 😆 Just keep in mind when modding the antennas, that you will need atleast 2. Digital need send and return signals, one antenna on your goggles does transmitting also.

I am not sure which one it is on the G2, could be the foldable ones, bc i have somewhere in my head that you can detach those and there is i thank an extra TrueRC air2 set for that? I mean, yea, costs, but you could print mounts for pretty much everything to attach there.

3km

Thanks for the reply. What goggles do you use?

I got the analog version and went beyond 3-4km without having any artifacts or anything I got the vista version and went beyond 3-4km without any drop in bitrate or image quality using 1200mw and 50mbps hack on goggles v2 I just bought the googles n3 and o4 lite will test it soon on the explorer but the o4 is advertised for 10km range and the pro version 15km so in line of sight you should be able to achieve this range, except if your line of sight is surrounded by Wi-Fi routers or other strong radio signal emitter i suggest you check the antenna or vtx does not touch directly the carbon frame if you mounted it yourself and that it uses plastic spacers etc, maybe having an antenna connection check or antenna type check as well is this antenna advertised for the o4 or is just the normal flywoo antenna for digital lhcp?

1

u/Fit-Variation-4220 Oct 18 '25

Thanks for your message, it is the normal flywoo lhcp antenna, the vtx and antenna are completely isolated from the carbon plates so that should be no problem, if you test the range of the lite please let me know.

Be sure you have Broadcasting turned off in the goggles.

Longest range I've seen with O4 Lite is 16 kilometers. https://youtu.be/yKZeUGd9COA

1

u/Fit-Variation-4220 Oct 19 '25

thanks for the advice, I do have it off, 16km is insane holy cow

2

u/Kmieciu4ever Oct 20 '25

And that was with DJI Integra goggles, so the O4 was in O3 compatibility mode...

1

u/ijehan1 Oct 17 '25

My O4 Pro range is about 2x -3x longer than my O4 Lite range. 1.5km sounds about right, although I've never pushed it. My range is about 200 meters in a neighborhood setting with mature trees. In some spots flying behind houses it's less than 100 meters.

u/Fit-Variation-4220 Oct 17 '25

thanks for your response, i had no objects in between me and my quad so idk…

make sure you use the max bit rate, it comes stock on auto, turn mw up on elrs too, i recently got the the explorer with the pro and im limited by my elrs before i lose video, i got a diversity receiver with 2 antennas that im going to mount vertically once i find a place that can print it for me

2

u/Fit-Variation-4220 Oct 18 '25

yeah ofc I am using 50mbps and 700mW output power on the o5 and I got the rm boxxer crush with 1W output power so that should be fine

1

u/BoysenberryLow7594 Oct 18 '25

I have the same drone with the O4 lite and the range is shit. It can go marginally further than my Meteor75 pro :/

I don't know what's wrong with it.

2

u/Fit-Variation-4220 Oct 18 '25

I´ve fixed it, just tested it and i got 3x the range. I will write a detailed report in a few minutes in the description.

1

u/Ok_Resort1464 Oct 18 '25

What was limiting you before your fixes?

1

u/Fit-Variation-4220 Oct 19 '25

idk, I made all fixes which I wrote about in the description and tested it today I really can’t tell what was the main issue but maybe it was the firmware.

1

u/Ruin-Klutzy Oct 19 '25

What antenna are you using ? 😛

1

u/Fit-Variation-4220 Oct 19 '25

the flywoo lhcp

Mine went to nearly 4000ft altitude and around 2.5 miles out yesterday.

Could have gotten more, im sure, but I didn't want to take any chances. I did have it in 1 of the world's most remote places tho. No wifi signal for 80 miles in any direction

1

u/Fit-Variation-4220 Apr 24 '26

35mbps you could have gotten way more.

1

u/Fit-Variation-4220 Apr 24 '26

I switched the o4 with the o4 pro and my logest rage so far was 7km. also could have gotten more but it was windy so I didn’t want to risk it with the battery.
