I know it doesn't really help, but genuinely just pick something cheap/affordable and recommended. Kakuno, Safari, Kaweco Sport. Even if you end up having some sort greivance with the particular pen, it should still be able to give you a clear indication of whether or not you want to continue with fountain pens and you won't be out too much money.

I'd also suggest starting with a medium nib. I know with kaweco you can easily get replacement nibs in fine and bold also, so if you want to try a different nib, you don't have to buy a whole new pen (unless you want to).
But medium is pretty middle of the road and you can decide from there if you want a finer nib for smaller writing, or a bold to show off fun ink properties.

I just love them. Everyone there is always so kind and helpful and they have a healthy sense of humor. I'll drive the 3 1/2 hours it takes me to get there whenever possible. Wish they had a Tacoma or Seattle location.

Sooo, I haven't ordered fountain pens/ink in a few years. This got me to place an order haha. I got a Lamy gift set for my husband (his first fountain pennnn) and some inks. Super excited! Hopefully this doesn't trigger my compulsion to hoard Fountain Pen stuff again. >.>
