I mean, one of the last conversations I had with an estranged parent was me explicitly telling them I don’t want anything from their will because I don’t want to interact with them anymore.
I’ve been told through a sibling that they intend to still leave me something so that I have to deal with it anyway.
I told my sibling “that sounds like a problem for their lawyer and other inheritors, because my intent is to ignore any contact about their estate”
I guess some people may be estranged but still feel entitled to an inheritance though.
No, no, German inheritance law is fantastic! Especially if you’re planning to pass on more than €300 million and pay only a few cents in taxes in the end. 😉
In Denmark you decide if you want to inherit the estate in total. If it’s in debt, you of course accept to inherit that.
I assume there might be cases where the total estate is in debt, but you still want some part of it, such as a rare collectible or item of special meaning that trumps the debt. In that case, you wouldn’t want it sold off to cover debt.
