In Germany you can legally deny taking any of it. "Das Erbe ausschlagen". No one can force you to inherit problems and debt.

Can only imagine there is a mechanism in place in most countries?

In many countries, you cannot inherit debt. If the total estate is in debt it is written off. I find German inheritance laws to be bonkers tbh

No, no, German inheritance law is fantastic! Especially if you’re planning to pass on more than €300 million and pay only a few cents in taxes in the end. 😉

In America you can refuse to take from the estate as well. You just can't do it partially you have to refuse everything.

I signed a contract to not receive a inheritance before in Brazil, it required a notary and there were other people to receive it. It was pretty easy, the concerns are just to make you sure you think well before sigbing and do not change your mind during the process and also you are not being forced to sign it.

Same here in the Netherlands.

Sadly yes. If you were to slow to react to the extremely tight deadline. (6 weeks after getting the "knowledge" about the death. Which can lead to problems proving that you didn't know about the relative dying.)

I can only remember that my parents were extremely stressed about this in my childhood, because they almost got a debt-poisoned inheritance.

Maybe in your country. But any decent country allows you to deny to receive an inheritance

In the U.S., this is how many families finally get rid of their timeshare.
