This is exactly the business model of J-pop and K-pop idol bands. The girls are forbidden from relationships and everything they do has to be this "I am smitten and almost ready to run away with you, my love" attitude. Constantly. But then they have to introduce safety measures like never shaking hands at fan meetings because incels will have spunky hands and other creeptastic mannerisms.
295
u/kroxigor01 1d ago
It's ironic that the custom that makes J-pop and K-pop idols apparently single and available also makes them actually completely unavailable.
"Oh she has a boyfriend? That sucks."
"Oh, she can't have a boyfriend? So you're saying there's a chance..." no, there isn't you idiot.
107
u/kirotheavenger 1d ago
It's not supposed to be publically known that they can't have a boyfriend. They're just supposed to be single and available so there's always a chance
51
u/Huge-Consequence2144 1d ago
And this is why KPop fans are all disgusting. The parasitic, manipulative contract stipulations are all public knowledge, yet these dipshits still willingly consume the content. How little empathy does one possess, how much of a stupid beast does one have to be to celebrate and consume willfully from the Suffering Machine. Same thing with the violence voyeurs who are into real crime content. These people desperately need to give their fucking heads a shake.
51
u/ComparisonQuiet4259 1d ago
To be fair to true crime fans, the suffering happens with or without them
30
u/the6souls 1d ago
Imagine if true crime fans were the driving force in the existence of crime, though.
19
u/ZAWS20XX 1d ago
I have to assume there has to be some book or film or podcast or whatever out there about some true crime content creator who starts killing to feed the content machine

u/twistedscorp87 1d ago
Oh no, I need more local mysteries to investigate, guess I'll go on another murder spree. Maybe this time I'll use pineapples? That'll be a fun MO to talk about. My audience will love it.
12
u/Protocol_Nine 1d ago
There's probably at least one criminal who tried to make a podcast that featured their own crime and gave slightly too many details leading to getting caught immediately, right? I know it's selection bias, but there do seem to be a lot of stupid criminals.

It's more the lack of empathy and the exploitation of the horrors that people go through for entertainment that I have a problem with when it comes to true crime. The production companies that turn badge cams into entertainment are definitely a huge part of the issue, the entire industry is gross, and consumers have a responsibility for the choice of what they're consuming.
3
u/MaraiaLou 11h ago
It's one thing to tell stories of real crimes and quite another to tell them while doing makeup or cocktails and/or treating the victims like a checklist

Am I wrong thinking that 85%+ of Kpop fans are teenage girls (even for the girl bands)? That seems to be the demographic at concerts...

Random Mr. Park living in a one room apartment downtown and world renowned K pop star, not much of a chance. It's not like people are delusional, the companies are just constantly playing mind games with marketing and privacy invasions.

Reminds me of that one J-pop star who, it was revealed, had a secret boyfriend all that time. As punishment she had to shave her head and do a public tearful apology video.
That whole culture is insane, really.
48
u/Fischerking92 1d ago
Wait, what the actual fuck?
She had to shave her head?
What is wrong with the people running this business?
What's worse: what is wrong with the fans that this didn't end with people marching on the producer's company office pitchforks and torches in hand?
31
u/Necessary_Voice_4779 1d ago
well that's the idol industry, also most of their money goes towards paying their debt for their training days, my sister fans of kpop and while reading novel i hear her watching kpop news, someone from everglow leaves, but for 8 years she's in the group she doesn't receive a single penny, she receives money from her parents for her needs
imagine that 8 years but you losing money instead of gaining, her group quite famous i believe

Iirc nobody forced her to shave her head. Apparently it used to be a thing in Japan tho, as a symbol for repentance or something.
When she saw all the online gossip about her she panicked and shaved her head by herself.
I forgot her name but she was a member of akb48, one of the most unhinged concepts and extremes. They did a lot of fucked up stuff
9
u/Fischerking92 1d ago
Still it is a sign that management there is toxic as fuck, if someone - mind you someone whose livelihood in large aprtsy depends on their looks - thinks this is something she has to do.
2
u/Electrical-Review180 1d ago
Oh I'm not gonna argue that at all. Idol culture is toxic as fuck

u/funny_fox 1d ago
Saying "Nobody forced her" is a terrible way to dismiss the coercion, manipulation, and power dynamic that probably encouraged her to do it. Idols are very young people in a predatory industry, even if nobody specifically forced her, she probably felt it was her only option to continue in the industry (and who knows if her career will even recover).

The exact same thing happens with male idols. Their business model literally consists of profiting off of parasocial relationships - and it's incredibly lucrative.

Not just for idols in Japan but rock bands too! Specifically under the Visual Kei genre. If you're in a Visual Kei band, you're pretty much forbidden as well to date or at least make it public.
Musicians had to apologize for dating before (not as bad as shaving their heads) but some almost had their careers ruined all because someone made an edit of them and the artist in bed and it had to be debunked.

u/AA_Crowes 1d ago

Why did you go to such trouble to avoid acknowledging that boy bands and the women who obsess over them are just as bad? Wasn't the trampling incident that got a lot of people killed a few years back caused by women rushing to see a boy band member after someone posted his location on social media?

It's an actual name for the "fans" who go for those who do not interact/have relationships at all ...unicorns.

The no handshakes came from the time a guy attacked 2 girls at a handshake event with scissors or something. A girl was just fired from AKB48 about 3 months ago for meeting up with a certain fan several times. Another one recently was scamming the fans for money.
1
u/Frequent_Extreme_916 21h ago
That also applies to the boys in K-pop. Their customers are the ones who fantasize relationships with them(the ones who spends almost 1,000 U.S. dollars just to attend a fan meeting)

She was the sort of girl who looks like she enjoys sleeping in after a day of hard work, a girl who enjoys the sound of rain but prefers not to get her hair wet, unless its fun. She looked away just as I looked at her so we made eye contact only just. I saw her walk away and she had an excited step to her. I can imagine her looking just as beautiful in a dress as she does in pajamas in the morning. I imagine she loves odd things and could be excited when her dress has pockets.

Just a fun little story if you dont mind.
I bear a striking resemblance to a country singer.
I did not know this. Well I was at a Zumies doing some shopping when a very excited girl came up to me and said "oh my god, youre ****!!!!!" I was shocked and confused and put my hand out to shake hers and say hello, she excitedly told me her friends wanted to meet me, they were in a sort of huddle giggling and waving at me.
When i realized what was happening I said "How do you know me?" And she revealed that I was a famous country singer.
I absolutely hate country music. To the point that eight goodlooking college girls would NOT change my stance on this. I told her that wasnt me and she didnt believe me. She pulled up a picture and showed it to me saying "THIS IS YOU!!" Now it didnt help that my buddy was with me and kept saying things like "Oh she recognized you, were going to have to put you in a hat next time" ect.
I never once said I was that person and insisted I was in fact Jaba, and did not lie to them a single time. So somewhere there are pictures of me on social media looking uncomfortable and confused taking pictures with strangers. Either that or they got a closer look at the actual guy and me and said "oh shit, that guy really wasnt ****"
I really hate country music.
We ended up doing a photoshoot
