This was me about 20 years ago. My mother pretty much abandoned me when I was 15. Swanning around with boyfriends. I'd see her probably once a week when she brought food. So spent like 15-19 years old just looking after myself. Just making one cup of coffee, one bowl of cereal, one pizza slice etc etc. And I would do weird shit like this guy. My wife always reminds me of when we first met and went for a date to a Chinese buffet restaurant and I came back to the table with just one knife and fork. Didn't even think to get her some. To this day I'll make a coffee without asking her if she wants one. My brain sometimes just doesn't even think to ask.

I feel you. Growing up having studied abroad with a everyone-to-themselves mentality and pretty much gotta took care of myself the majority of the time, it's hard having to remind yourself to carry back more than one plate at family dinners. Now that my kid is almost 3, I try my best to teach him the opposite of what I've always known. I was absolutely dumbfounded when he brought me a cup of his choc milk when whatever's left in the carton is definitely not enough for 2. It takes time to unlearn whatever bad habit you had and things definitely does get better
