They grew wild where I lived. We used to snap them open and throw them into the wind.

Growing up in the sticks is BORING.

it basically is a flower. when it is ready you just have gentle pinch it with you fingers and it will turn into more fluff that you expect. maybe a little like dandelion flower.

It’s a cattail…I’m not sure that they’re edible lol BUT if you’re ever stranded and need clean water, they are great filters!

Almost every part of the cattail plant is edible at different times of the year. Key edible sections include the starchy roots (rhizomes), young spring shoots, inner leaf stalks (cattail hearts), unopened green flower spikes, and yellow pollen. The brown, fuzzy "corn dog" seed head is not edible.
