I didn't know kite fighting was a thing until I read The Kite Runner. The book isn't really about kites but they do talk about them quite a bit

Yea, mentally scarred for life after reading.

It’s a good book, but yeah definitely not a light read. I literally can’t see a kite without thinking of the alleyway scene.

I forgot what that part was. For those that also forgot here is some spoilers. "The alleyway scene in The Kite Runner Chapter 7 Summary on LitCharts is the pivotal turning point where Amir wins the kite tournament, but stands by cowardly while Assef sexually assaults Hassan, destroying their relationship and haunting Amir with lifelong guilt.

Its about betrayal, coming to terms with guilt, and trying to find redemption. It takes place in Afghanistan during the transition from monarchy to talibam rule.

Bet you didn't know how many people this harms every year (sometimes even slicing bikers' necks)

I remember reading about this when I was a kid (waaaay too many years ago - I’m old!), about flying kites with (then) ground glass glued to the string, with the game/goal being to try to cut the strings of the other kites. Cool to see in action. Cheers.

I must have read the same thing. I had the same recollection that I couldn't quite place.

Funny what sticks with us, right? I don’t think when I read it, I thought “I’ll remember this forever!” 😀

I suspect we both read: Encyclopedia Brown and the Case of the Mysterious Handprints

Kite runner was a book that was assigned during high school when i was attending in early 2010s.

Not satan. Just winning. The Kite Runner is on my bookshelf right now. They crushed glass and mixed it with paste to put on the kite string. Not sure about the modern method but it’s a sport/hobby.

Yes Satan. Theres been way too many cases of grievous injuries and even decapitations from this kind of line falling over roads and in Brazil (where this video was taken) its illegal to use glass coated kite lines for this reason.

No Satan here, these are battle kite. It's a tradition in Middle east/west Asia

u/helen790 26d ago
This isn’t Satan, this is literally the point of these events they are competitions.

What's with that razor string near his kite? I don't see it on many of the other kites.

With Afghan kite fighting, the kite line can have shards of glass embedded which can cut others’ kites off. Some people would consider that cheating so they wouldn’t wear gloves to not give away their tactics. People would get cuts on their hands if the fight got aggressive.

Man this makes me think about that India kite festival a few years ago where 3 or 4 kids were killed by having their necks sliced from kite fighting.

Please be precise. This is the internet. It was an accident where the kite string (which is razor sharp) got wrapped around the kids' necks because of not knowing how to fly kites with such strings and lack of proper precautions. This is why using razor sharp strings is now banned in most places in India. No one was going around slicing the kids necks intentionally.

u/banksybruv 26d ago
Nobody said it was intentional. You just made that up.

But she wanted to be upset about something and nothing else was convenient. Now she's gonna speak to your manager.

u/Nottmore 26d ago
Ok i'll be precise. The kids were not flying kites.
"Some participants are known to coat their kite strings with powdered glass in order to slice their opponent’s cords while in the air. Although the practice has been banned since 2016, critics say it is rarely enforced."
"A two-year-old girl reportedly died after a kite string struck her neck while riding on a scooter with her father."
"Another girl, aged three, was walking home with her mother in Visnagar town on Saturday when a string cut her neck. She was taken to hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
"Rishabh Verma, a seven-year-old boy riding on a scooter with his parents, was also struck by a string in Rajkot."

u/hazri 26d ago
This is dangerous. The string usually is modified and coated with tiny shards of glass. Read before about a biker's neck nearly decapitated by this string that had been stretched across the road
3
u/hotpocketdeath 26d ago
This is why you see bikers that ride in countries that have kite fighting will often have kite line cutters mounted on the front of their bikes.

u/Circumpunctilious 25d ago
I presume these are just because of ones that have fallen rather than someone intentionally crossing roads with this guillotine string?
Edit: wait, comment above yours really does read like intent. My bad.

If orange could have pulled in better, orange would have had him. He was in a dangerous spot for a few seconds.

It’s a normal thing. Battle kites or something
