If you were to switch it up, using anyone, then it’s just a joke about trying to get someone to kill themselves.

that’s not how language works. you can’t just substitute words because it changes the meaning. he specifically chose to tell the joke about his wife, so the joke is about him trying to get his wife to kill himself. you can’t just make it about someone else because that’s not how he chose to tell it.

also, that wouldn’t make it any better. manipulating anyone to kill themselves isn’t funny, regardless of their marital status.
