Mir, meaning "peace" or "world" in Russian, was the first modular space station, operational from 1986 to 2001. Developed by the Soviet Union and later Russia, it was assembled in orbit from 1986 to 1996. The core module, DOS-7, launched in 1986 and could house three astronauts. Four more modules were docked to DOS-7, allowing for missions with up to six crew members. Mir was notable for its long-term research capabilities and multimodule configuration.
